The Coolest Thing I Saw in Belgium

Postby HighmoonMedia on Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:47 pm

I uploaded the Flickr gallery for the latest episode of The Gamer Traveler - Brugge, Belgium, and came across something that I had been meaning to share with geeks around the world.

Aside from all the neat places I visited in Belgium, all the wonderful historic grounds I traipsed upon, all the yummy beer I drank, the yummy chocolates I ate, and the wonderful people I met, there was one event, one surprise event, that stands out as "The Coolest Thing I Saw in Belgium (tm)".

Let me not use words, and let the pictures speak for themselves:

That thing is exactly what it looks like, a mechanical, motorized tiger.

It was built by a local metalworker who has a studio on the same street I was staying at (I don't recall his name now, but I have his business card at home, with a website, which I'll post later tonight). On our last day in Brugge, I went out for a little walk around the block, and ended up on the open-air dining area of this small restaurant two buildings down from our B&B. I saw the mechanical tiger standing there, but at first I thought it was a bitchin sculpture (Brugge is the kind of town where you can see open air art displays). Then the guy stood up and turned it on and I could not hold my geekness inside.

I spoke with him a little (him in much better English than me in my horrible Dutch) and he told me this was the first time he had taken it outside the studio and was having a celebratory beer. He then stood up and proceeded to ride the mechanical tiger! What's even better, I got video:

I would love to embedd it, but HTML is off on the forums. Go watch it, trust me.

Just a handful of people saw this walking work of art take its first steps, beaming artists riding atop. These are the kinds of magic moments that happen when you travel that you remember forever, the moments that you could never, in a million years, have forseen and that happen, seemingly, just for you.

And THAT was "The Coolest Thing I Saw in Belgium (tm)." :)

Wow, that is awesome.

Isn't it awesome? Check out the guy's website. You can see two more movies of the lion (or tiger) in action, plus pics of all his other metal sculptures.

Sweet merciful crap, that is so cool. Did he rend the flesh from any tourists with that thing while he was out and about?

Doesn't get much more steam-punk than that.

That should be in a movie... perhaps an evil inventor villain unleashes a train-car full of them on an unsuspecting crowd to cover his escape.

Crossfire, no, he didn't rend any tourist flesh, though he almost caused an accident when a driver passing by turned around to see the guy riding the tiger and almost hit a guy on a bicycle. :)

Jim, I was thinking more along the lines of a PC. If you check the guy's website, you'll see he has these series of humanoid metal sculptures as well (we could see them from the street as we walked). Now imagine those also mechanized and the tiger as the mount, and you have a great PC concept right there.

Talk about a technowizard!

It was better that you didn't embed the video. The link worked just fine, but the introduction served as a nice teaser.

Those are some mad robotics skills for a metal worker.

I just wanted to say that is a cool cat. Thanks for sharing. :)

Too bad he wasn't riding that around when I was in Brugge, that would have been awesome to see live!

Sorry for the fairly laggy reply, been busy at work.

I went in March/April of 2004 to 10 countries in Europe over about 3.5 weeks. We spent a bit of that in Belgium in two different stints, once heading down the Atlantic coast and then on the way back to Amsterdam.

My first night in Europe was spent at an Ibis in Brugge. Unfortunately, it was also the hotel I left my pillow in, so I only ever had my own comfy pillow for one night. I sometimes wonder if my pillow is off on its own adventures even now. :)

Well, this dude just finished the mechanical tiger this year, just a few days before I saw it, as a matter of fact.

I also did the whole Grand Tour back in 2001 - 35 days, 7 countries, 17 cities. LOVED IT! :D

Unfortunately back then digital cameras were very expensive and digital exposures on a CD were not widely available (man, how the world has changed in 5 years!) so all my pics from that trip need to be rescanned before I can put them online. I have a few at the Transfiguration Tour site, but there's certainly more (though not as much as for this last trip, for which we took some 1200 pics with 3 different cameras!).

Since like two days ago there has been a flurry of comments for the video of the mechanical tiger in Brugge I posted to YouTube some 3 weeks ago. I just found out why:

My video was honored as #98 in the 100 Top Rated (This Month) videos in Travel & Places. Even at 98, I think it's pretty cool and it seems so does everyone else who has seen the video.

Drop by and leave a comment as well. Maybe next month I can go higher!

Well, I guess that helps explain the 4300+ views this thread has gotten. And possibly even some of our new listeners!

Way to go, Daniel!
