George Hackbarth and the Bomb

Hi, I’m George Hackbarth (in the middle with the white beard)
Together with my friend Rudy Vergoth, I machined the internal parts of the first atomic bombs in Los Alamos, New Mexico. While lots of people contributed to the research, design and implementation of the first atomic bombs, I was responsible for making the uranium and other parts to the specifications of the designers. That’s my wife Irene in the corner, and we are in our living room in Chicago. We are in our 80s and are pleased to tell our story in the following pages. The transcripts of interviews to this site were created by high school students Michael, Cindy and Jonathan with a coach Daniel Schnopp-Wyatt as part of a project called “ThinkQuest”. Since their site has some problems, we decided to re-compile parts of it here. Thanks for visiting
