1. "Editor's Corner"

Dear NT-ers, this list is growing fast, we are now at 65,000
subscribers. We're in our third year and the old-timers among
you will remember we were very excited with our 10,000-th sub-
scription! Thanks for your support and input. With your help
we will make it to the 100,000 in 1998. Please forward this
newsletter to as many of your NT friends as possible?

Also a thank you to all of you that filled out the survey this
week. Since we have fully automated it, here are the most
important results already. Find out what your colleagues are
doing and where they are going with NT in the NT RELATED NEWS
section.

Another topic:

Sunbelt sponsors 5 free lists, each of them the largest
worldwide in their area. The most important are:
1) NTools E-News with 65,000 subscribers
2) NTSYSADMIN with over 4,000 people (also in Spanish)
3) MCSE-List with over 3,000 NT Pro's
(subscribe here: http://www.ntsoftdist.com/scripts/lyris.pl)

You'd be surprised how much resources these take. We have a
super fast Intergraph Server running at avg. 60% CPU, with a
full T-1 to keep these lists going. To support the expansion
of all our lists and to ensure they stay free we decided to
now and then open the NT-List for a sponsored message. I will
personally filter these and ensure they are relevant to the
NT System Administrator needs. It will not be more than one
per week. Your email addresses will not be sold, and sponsored
messages will be sent via the NT-List via the high-end, high
quality and secure lyris list server. I hope you agree with
this strategy, we are committed to keep providing you with
fast, free, up to date and NT related info!

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman

2. "TECH BRIEFING"

* WHY WINTEL DOES NOT SCALE AS WELL AS UNIX/RISC

Ever wondered why NT does not scale like Unix/Risc? Well,
successful Unix platforms like HP, Digital and let's not forget
IBM AIX, have had 5 to 15 years to tune their hard- and software
for each other. Compilers can be optimized for specific hardware,
and Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) chips can and are
designed with specific software requirements in mind.

Each of these Unix/Risc vendors have their own flavor of Unix
and, (although they would protest heavily if I would say this)
their proprietary product offering consisting of a combined hard-
software combo still locks in customers. Sure, Apps under Unix can
be ported but there are _many_ pitfalls. I've been there myself and
trying to get C running under different compilers with different
and sometimes nonexistent statements is a nightmare. In a nutshell
and somewhat simplified, the different flavors of Unix are optimized
for their specific hardware.

In the case of Microsoft and Intel, it's not that easy. NT needs
to run on Intel and Alpha, and used to run on the Power PC platform.
To do this, NT was designed with the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
that makes NT hardware independent. This is a two-edged sword. It
forbids NT to be tuned to a specific hardware architecture.

The Intel Pentium family chip has its own requirements. I needs to
support DOS, Unix, NT and more. In short, Microsoft and Intel cannot
and never will be able to optimize their respective platforms for
each other like Unix/Risc vendors can! This is one of the underlying
reasons for the NT scaling problem. Especially SMP servers with 4 or
8 CPU's suffer from this inevitable design restriction.

Microsoft is working hard at it though, and third party vendors are
also coming up with innovative solutions.

3. "NT RELATED NEWS"

* JUNE 25 DATE FOR WINDOWS 98 AVAILABILITY

Looks like June 25 will be the delivery date for W98. Microsoft
also said they plan to have Microsoft Plus 98 ready at that same
day. W98 is a 'bridging' product until the NT Consumer Edition will
be pre-installed on PC's from the year 2000 forward. Many in the
enterprise world are already considering going to NT WS and skip
98 but for the fact NT that needs much more hardware. That upgrade
is cutting deep into the budgets so many will continue to run 3.x
and W95 until the PC's are fully written off and replaced with
the latest Pentium / 64Meg Ram machines.
----------------------------

* NT SYSTEM ADMIN SURVEY RESULTS

We have had over 600 responses so this makes a nice 1% of the
list which is statistically significant but we are making
no scientific claims here . Here goes!

4. "THIRD PARTY NEWS"

* ARE YOU MANAGING A LAN OR RUNNING A COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT?

Have you ever sighed "Geez, I have to do all the user account
management myself?" Or, "I'm wasting time doing all these password
resets" Or, "I'm granting permissions to people that really should
not have them", and compromise security in the mean time, .

As you by now have found out, NT Admin is all or nothing. No granular
approach, no way to delegate some of the simple tasks to departments.
The phone rings frequently with users that need things done that their
local team lead could do. You are kept from expanding your NT Lan.

What you don't want is give anyone who just needs to do password
resets the keys to the kingdom. You want certain people to do certain
things. We have a great solution for you. The new version 2.03 Release
Candidate 1 of Trusted Enterprise Manager (TEM) gives you over 20
different levels of administration functions or rights, supports
MS Exchange (CREATE/DELETE mailbox) and it simplifies use of those
levels by using a new technology called Active Collections.

This is a neat feature that lets you group certain rights into a
"collection" and reuse that set of rights to multiple parties.
Any changes in the collection are propagated to everyone that
has that collection. Great time saver via a simple point-and-click.

The reporting has killer features, it answers all the following
questions and then some:

- Give me all the records of everyone who has not logged on since Jan 1.
- Who is on the system all the time?
- Which users never log off that server?
- How many times has that user logged on?
- What are the users in all my groups?
- What are ALL the groups that John and Mary belong to?
- Get me ALL administrators in ALL groups

And this is just a small example. There is a powerful query by example
possible with wildcard options.

The new TEM 2.0 is worth looking at and has a very low price per seat.
It's a nobrainer that has an incredibly short payback time. Get your
30-day full function eval at http://www.sunbelt-software.com/tem.htm
We have included a set of screen shots so you can get a fast idea what
this tool can do for you, and dramatically expanded the FAQ.

* CREATE A SCALABLE WEB CLUSTER

Sunbelt has clustered it's web servers. I'm the webmaster of these
two machines, and when I pull the power plug of the Intergraph
server, the Dell takes over flawlessly. The webserver is mission
critical for us, and I sleep a lot better these days, seriously.
The cluster software is Convoy, and we mirror the Inetpub, wwwroot
directory of course with Octopus.

Valence Research has teamed up with Intergraph Computer Systems
and now offer a scalable NT Web cluster solution called WebScale.
WebScale is based on Valence's Convoy Cluster Software and is tightly
integrated with hardware and software from Intergraph.

Convoy transparently combines two to eight Web servers to handle
high-volume network traffic and support automatic load balancing and
failover protection to ensure maximum performance and availability
during peak-traffic time periods.

The newly released version 2.1 of Convoy Cluster(tm) Software is
now available from our website, and has the following updates:
* Added support for draining (completing all outstanding connections)
* Extended port rule traffic control commands
* Convoy Setup dialog now automatically generates a cluster network
address from the primary cluster IP address.
* Added support for Ethernet switches in unicast mode.
* Optimized cluster convergence time when hosts are manually removed
from the cluster with the 'cluster stop' command.
* Enhanced load distribution for small clusters.

If you want the full InterGraph Hard & Software solution, check out
http://www.intergraph.com/ics/interserve. If you already have webservers
running, download your own 30-day Convoy eval at the sunbelt website:

* WHATS NEW IN STORAGE RESOURCE MANAGER V2.0

Overview:

Storage Resource Manager 2.0 allows you to:
 Logically group your storage resources.
Define thresholds and conditions that generate alert notifications
Schedule when Storage Resource Manager will scan your network for
new storage resources and group alert conditions.

In addition, Storage Resource Manager 2.0 extends support to the
NT-Alpha platform, offers enhanced disk management features and
improved charting capabilities.

Storage Object Groups:

Grouping allows you to apply a set of alert definitions to multiple
storage resources. The following group types can be created:
 Users
 Computers
 Partitions

You can create any number of groups. A resource can only belong
to one group.

Alerts Conditions, Thresholds and Delivery Mechanisms:

Alert conditions and thresholds are applied to groups. You can define
the following alert conditions and thresholds:
Exceeded user consumption threshold (soft-quota management)
Exceeded partition size threshold (% remaining & MB)
 Discovery of new disk defects
 Computer not found/scanned
Discovery of a new, unmanaged computer
RAM change in a managed computer
 New disks or partitions found
 Missing disks or partitions

Alert notifications are always sent to the Storage Resource Manager's
Current Alerts page. For each group, you can also select any combination
of the following additional alert mechanisms:
Email (via MAPI or IIS 4.0)
SNMP traps including alert condition type
 Windows NT Event Log

Scan Time Control:

Storage Resource Manager 2.0 offers greater control over when data is
collected.
Each resource group can schedule when its data is updated.
The scan for each resource group type (computer, partition, and user)
collects a unique set of data.
Each group has a "Scan Now" feature that allows you to immediately
initiate the group's scan.

Soft Quota Management:

The combination of creating user groups, setting thresholds on user
space consumption, and sending alert notifications when a user's disk
space quota is exceeded, makes Storage Resource Manager 2.0 a soft
quota management solution. Soft quota management offers a practical
method to manage user consumption of disk space. This approach to
controlling disk space usage eliminates some of the challenges
associated with hard quota solutions:
End-user frustration when a hard quota is reached
Administrative overhead (e.g. answering help desk calls, increasing
quotas, etc.).

Enhanced Disk Management:

Enhanced disk management features in Storage Resource Manager 2.0
include:
Setting the AWRE bit on SCSI disks to enable the tracking and
reporting of grown defects
 Reporting of remaining spare blocks
Performance metrics by reporting disk rotational speed
 Firmware version reporting

Improved Charting:

Storage Resource Manager 2.0 includes improved charting solutions:
Publishing quality charts that display distributions and historical
trend analysis
Context sensitive drill-down hyperlinks enabling direct access to
information on the objects represented in the charts
 3-D and rotating pie charts
Tooltip or dwell labels for charted data points
Zoom in capability to view crowded charts
Previous and Next buttons to traverse charting of a large number
of objects

NT-Alpha Platform Support:
The Storage Resource Manager agent component now supports the NT-Alpha
platform.

Version 2.0 will be released the first week of May. We are requesting
Beta Testers for April. Download V1.01 and contact us at:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/highsrm.htm

* IMPROVING NT I/O SPEED AND RELIABILITY

Balance Suite V2.5 has just been released. Balance suite is a software
solution that can dramatically increase Windows NT I/O performance,
while simultaneously improving reliability. Balance suite allows a
Windows NT Server or Workstation to take advantage of multiple Ethernet
Network Interface Cards (NICs) connected in parallel to a hub or switch.

Balance Suite presents these cards to the operating system?s protocol
stack as if they were a single, high speed, virtual NIC with a single
network address. This is essentially analogous to the concept of RAID
for storage systems, only applied to network cards. As a result of
Balance Suite, traffic to and from clients can take advantage of the
combined bandwidth of the cards. Balance Suite can more than double
the server?s I/O capability when three NICs are used in parallel.

Reliability is also improved, because Balance Suite automatically
deactivates a NIC when it fails, and automatically reactivates it when
the failure is corrected, this failure management protects most clients
from the downtime generally associated with NIC failure. Clients
employing persistent client connections will not be aware that a
failure occurred. Those with older client technology will simply
choose to 'retry' the connection, still avoiding reboot and re-login
delays.

Some Throughput Numbers: (check out the graphs on the website)

1 NIC: 90.42 Mbps (without Balance Suite)
2 NICs: 156.88 Mbps (With Balance Suite)
3 NICs: 187.53 Mbps (With Balance Suite)

Balance Suite is compatible with most switches and hubs and a variety
of certified NICs from an assortment of manufacturers. Balance Suite
has been thoroughly tested and has been certified by Microsoft as
'Designed for Backoffice'. The list of certified NICs and additional
company and product information as well as a 30-day eval can be found
at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/balance.htm

* LYRIS EMAIL LIST SERVER V2.5 RELEASED

Shelby Group has released version 2.5 of their Lyris Email List
Server. This is another big step forward for email list management
with new features, a faster mail engine and an easy-to-use web
interface for both administrators and list members. Sunbelt uses
this product to send you NTools E-News and the new Lyris version
is this week's "STU'S Warmly Recommended".

One of the most exciting additions to this version of Lyris is the
"MultiView" feature. This allows members to read and contribute
messages to the list via their news reader. This is the only list
server that offers this innovative way to interact with an email list.

Another new feature is MailMerge. Now you can merge your members'
names and email addresses, making custom messaging much more powerful.

Customization and programmability add to the existing features of
failsafe unsubscribe, automatic error-mailing handling and multi-level
security ensuring Lyris' place as a leader in email list servers.

You probably already know that anything you place in the /windows/start
menu folder gets placed in the Start button menus; and that anything
placed in the /windows/start menu/startup folder gets run automatically
at startup. Well, Don pointed out to me that any shortcuts you place
in the /windows/application data/microsoft/internet explorer/quick
launch folder will appear as an icon on your taskbar alongside the
icons for "Launch Outlook Express," "View Channels," "Show Desktop" and
so on. It?s a cool way to customize IE4 and maybe to get some clutter
off your desktop! I wish I'd thought of this tip a couple dozen shortcut
icons ago.
