Hi NT-ers,

As you know, this is a short update in between the full
issues of NTools E-News which you will get the weekend
of the 18-th. There are two interesting items!

****************************************************
1) AUTOPILOT BECOMES NUMBER ONE POPULAR DOWNLOAD
2) FIRST VENDOR TO ANNOUNCE MS SYSCLONE COMPATIBILITY
****************************************************

1) AUTOPILOT BECOMES NUMBER ONE POPULAR DOWNLOAD

The AutoPilot downloads yesterday and today have shattered
all download records, 750 evals were pulled off our
webserver in 48 hours. This is one _very_ popular utility!

In my enthusiasm to get the product on-line I forgot one
essential element though... The Manual!!
But it's there now, it sits on the home page and you
can pull it down immediately, its a 220K zipped Word
File that explains how it works and how come you do
not have to do anything after installing it... just see
your system get a lot faster all by itself.

Some results of our own webserver:
Monday I measured our webserver performance with PerfMon
and _without_ AutoPilot at peak time: we were pegging out
at 100% CPU with 140Meg memory used. Today at Peak load and
_with_ AutoPilot running, we had only max. 70Meg memory used,
and avg 80% CPU. That was right after installing AutoPilot.
It was visibly faster as well. You should give it a go on
your NT systems that are being hammered!

2) FIRST VENDOR TO ANNOUNCE MS SYSCLONE COMPATIBILITY

I got this press release today and it explains a bit more about
my earlier message about cloning. I'm sure other vendors will
follow with similar messages BTW. This is a 100% copy of the
press release so a 'Marketing Hype Alert' applies. Here goes:

"Microsoft's SysClone Works Hand-in-Hand with PowerQuest's Drive
Image Professional.

OREM, Utah, USA, April 7, 1998 -- After PowerQuest Corp. led the
imaging market by giving away its SIDchanger tool to help
corporations image NT workstations, Microsoft Corp. contacted
PowerQuest and other industry representatives to discuss establishing
an industry standard to avoid future software conflicts. The conflict
arose when NT workstations containing individual security identifiers
(SID) were imaged. The result was Microsoft's announcement of
SysClone, introduced two weeks ago at the WinHEC conference in
Florida.

SysClone eliminates the need for other SID changing tools. It works
hand-in-hand with PowerQuest's Drive Image Professional to clone
multiple NT workstations and eliminate potential security conflicts
that can occur between cloned workstations and the server. The
process uses three steps:

1. IS managers use SysClone to prepare the NT workstation to be
imaged. SysClone removes security information and sets up the reboot
process to run the last phase of the NT install.

2. IS managers use Drive Image Professional to clone NT
workstations in minutes.

3. The automatic reboot process allows IS managers to enter the
security information (user name, computer name, CD password) and
avoid potential security conflicts between imaged workstations and
the server.

"PowerQuest is pleased with Microsoft's announcement of their
SysClone utility," says Val Arbon, PowerQuest software development
manager. "Although the name implies the ability to clone, Microsoft's
solution requires a third party imaging tool like Drive Image
Professional to replicate workstations."

Drive Image Professional is a hard-disk imaging tool that allows
VARs, corporate, government, and education IS managers to create an
image file of an entire hard disk, place it on a network or removable
media and then restore the image file to set up any number of
workstations. Drive Image Professional 2.0, scheduled to release
April 1998, will be easier to use and faster than version 1.0.

PowerQuest is a leading developer of hard-disk management software
for network servers as well as desktop computers. For more
information, see PowerQuest's home page at http://www.powerquest.com"

OK, that's all for this <<>>. Forward
it to your friends and tell them to subscribe? Thanks!
