1) INFOWORLD GOT IT ALMOST RIGHT: IT'S A BETA RELEASE

Microsoft released their SP4 as a Beta Release. Having
gotten wise after earlier SP's introduced bugs, they are
thoroughly beta testing new Service Packs. This is actually
an excellent move and makes System Admins that run mission
critical servers very happy campers. There is no data for
the final release announced. Here is a little more news about
it: http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,21233,00.html?owv
We will warn you right away when the SP4 gets released!

2) NEW VERSION 2.5 OF PRINT MANAGER PLUS: NOW PRINT QUEUES

Software Shelf International released Print Manager Plus 2.5 for
network administrators of educational institutions and corporate
environments. The product lets you track or set quotas on pages
printed per user, user group, or printer. New features include
the ability to set a maximum allowable page count on any one print
job. You can now use one console to manage all printers, users,
and queues on an entire domain. Administrators can run the
administrative program from any remote Windows NT workstation to
make it available for Help Desk staff, Library Desk staff, or anyone
responsible for the network or printing services.

Print Manager Plus 2.5 supports all major printers and runs on NT,
Windows 95, Windows 3.x, Mac OS, OS/2, and UNIX. Prices are similar
to disk quota manager utilities for the enterprise version. Educational
discounts are available. A fully functional 30-day trial version is
available at:http://www.sunbelt-software.com/printmgr.htm

3) NEW VERSION OF FORTRESS-NT: HIGHER NT WORKSTATION SECURITY

Fortress-NT provides several flexible but tamperproof security
enhancements to Windows NT Workstations and Servers:

* forced workstation AND domain logoff at a specified time of day
or after a period of inactivity, and limits logons to specified times;

* enforces that the screen saver always be enabled and password protected
with a specifiable maximum inactivity delay;

* Idle-Logout Screen Saver secures the workstation instantly, getting
around NT's built-in security "grace period";

* provides the FortLock utility which lets users quickly lock their
workstation or logoff with a simple button click, taskbar icon click,
or hotkey press.

Some new features in v2.40:

* Solves known bugs in Windows NT which can prevent complete logoff while
in secure mode.

* Provides option to force-logoff ANY user, including Administrators, at
a predetermined time of day. This can be useful for guaranteeing that
certain files are not in use at a particular time. (However, unlike
other users, Admins are never restricted from logging on.)

That's all for the moment!

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman
