1) GOOD (FREE) NT 4.0 OPTION PACK OVERVIEW

While navigating the maze of the humongous Microsoft website, I
ran into something pretty useful. As we will have to live with 4.0
for at least a year or more, it makes sense to have a look at the
4.0 Option Pack. This is a word file of 177K that really gets it all
together nicely and has tables with features and benefits. I plugged
it in the Sunbelt Freebie forum for your convenience. Download over
here! http://www.sunbelt-software.com/downlibr.htm

2) THE TWO JUNE SOFTWARE BESTSELLERS: SRM AND TEM

Several of you have been asking about what's going on between IBM
and HighGround after PC Week reported that IBM had picked HighGround
as a development partner for IBM's new Seascape line of storage
products. While HighGround tells me they can't divulge any details
at this time about their development relationship with IBM, I can
tell you that IBM has given the "Big Blue" seal of approval to SRM
through a new distribution deal they have just signed with HighGround.

Of course, even though IBM can now sell Storage Resource Manager,
you'll still get the best price and the best support from Sunbelt :-)
But for all of you IBM customers out there, this is yet another reason
why you should get Storage Resource Manager. Having both IBM and
Microsoft in HighGround's corner says a lot about HighGround's
technology and products.

The brand new version 2.0 of SRM is really ready for prime production
time. If you have not yet looked at it, the time is now. Basically,
with NT-use exploding in your organization you are going to run into
a brick wall of not being able to manage your storage. Microsoft chose
HighGround as their development partner for NT 5.0 and HighGround's
SRM is the only Web-based storage alerting, reporting, and analysis
solution for Windows NT environments.

Storage Resource Manager is winning awards for managing all aspects of
Windows NT storage, from user quotas to partition free space to file
trends, through an easy-to-use Web browser interface that can be run
anytime, anywhere.

- Enterprise Networking Reviews Storage Resource Manager

"Enterprise Networking magazine is the most recent publication to
recommend SRM. Their July/August issue says "Storage Resource Manager
is a web-based application that enables Windows NT domain and workgroup
administrators to manage their distributed storage resources more
effectively and efficiently. Storage Resource Manager automatically
creates easy-to-read configuration reports grouped by domain/workgroup,
computer, disk, disk partition, and even user.

In addition SRM monitors disk health and provides capacity and trend
statistics that allow administrators to manage their storage resources
efficiently. SRM present a simple but powerful management utility that
has the ability to handle the storage needs of your NT environments".

Storage Resource Manager 2.0 has been released last month, and adds the
features you've asked for, including the ability to set alerts and
thresholds when:

* User disk space consumption across the entire network or across
selected partitions exceeds a specified quota. Alerts are
automatically sent to the administrator, the user, or both so that
user consumption can be controlled without impacting productivity
or disk performance
* Disk partition free space falls below a specified threshold, so that
the availability of critical NT applications and file servers can
be maintained
* New disk defects occur, so that disk failures and unwanted downtime
can be avoided
* Computers are not scanned, so that server and workstation
availability is ensured
* New computers, disks, or partitions are discovered, so that new
resources can be scheduled for backup protection
* The amount of system memory changes, so that memory assets can be
tracked

Alert mechanisms include SMTP e-mail to a specified distribution list,
posting to the Windows NT event log, and an Alerts page inside SRM
Version 2.0 also integrates with SNMP management frameworks, including
CA-Unicenter, Tivoli TME, and HP OpenView/ITO so help desks that
monitor these consoles can take appropriate action.

Other features include user, computer, and partition groups so that
you can manage storage by business lines or functional responsibility,
enhanced control over scan times and frequencies to fit network
schedules, rollup reports by groups for storage accounting, disk
management enhancements, and, of course, support for Windows NT on
Digital Alpha.

And SRM still provides largest file and unaccessed file reports to
quickly identify wasted space, historical trends to ease load balancing
and capacity planning, and vulnerable file reports to ensure complete
backup coverage.

The benefits you'll enjoy with Storage Resource Manager include:
- increased Windows NT application and data availability
- control over runaway storage costs
- less time spent managing disk space and network storage
- easier capacity planning and budget justification
- greater control over remote storage and systems
- increased return on existing storage investments
- lower total cost of ownership of Windows NT Server

HighGround has built SRM from the ground up using the latest NT and
Intranet technologies, including COM, Active Server Pages, Internet
Information Server, DHTML, and JavaScript. And since HighGround
is one of Microsoft's chosen development partners for NT 5.0, your
investment in Storage Resource Manager is a safe bet going forward.

3) NEW SMARTBATCH V3.0 RELEASED

About a month ago I reported that in NT 5.0 there would be a built-
in mainframe Batch Job Utility. Well, I was wrong. Mea Culpa. No such
thing is going to be included. 5.0 will have some options that
programmers of these kinds of utilities can use though. But you still
need third party Batch tools. Here is a new version you should have a
look at.

SmartBatch32 V3.0 General Review:

Beginning with V3.0, OnLine ToolWorks Corporation will be introducing
both a Standard Edition and an Enterprise Edition of SmartBatch32.
The Standard Edition will be the next major release for current
customers of SmartBatch32 V2.03. The Enterprise Edition will be
targeted towards customers requiring more high-end features.

++ SmartBatch32 V3.0 Standard Edition key features and enhancements ++

(These features and enhancements are also found in the Enterprise
Edition)

* Redesign of parameters so that they are more straightforward and
only optionally require the use of Param Lists (referred to as
Parameter Groups in V3.0).

* Charting capability from the SmartBatch32 Log.

* Ability to compact the SmartBatch32 Database as a scheduled
Operation.

* Support of an additional notification method for NT users--the NT
Messenger Service.

4) EASY WAY TO FIND OUT WHAT THE LAST TIME IS A USER LOGGED ON

If you need to quickly know what the last time is a user has logged
in (to check if you can delete that user for instance)...
Use the USRSTAT.EXE from the Win NT ResKit, does it quick & easy!

That's all for this short NewsFlash!
