1. "EDITORS CORNER"

Hi NT-ers,

If you get this newsletter for the first time, this is your sample.

For all new subscribers we have a FREE UNDELETE that you can pick up
right now at http://www.coveryourbutt.com. This free Undelete is not
an expanded recycle bin. It is a True Undelete that will recover NT
files that are REALLY deleted. It scans the Master File Table and
finds the blocks that are part of the file. It?s an 865K download
and strongly recommended to get and install -before- you have any
deleted files you need to recover. In future issues of this newsletter
we will make you aware of more free tools to download. Want to know
more about NTools E-News, or forward it to your friends to subscribe?
Check http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntnews.htm

Let?s continue, there is a LOT of NT (Win2K) related news!

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman

PS, unsubscribing is explained at the very end of this newsletter
and is 10 seconds work, but I suggest you wait until you have read
a few issues, you?ll like the up-to-date info.

2. "TECH BRIEFING"

* SERVICE PACK 4 FEATURES AND BUG REPORTS

First of all, MS has done a relatively good job with this enormous
SP4. The beta testing was thorough and not too many problems have
stuck up their ugly heads. There are still some issues though, and
the first wave of hotfixes will soon appear. Microsoft learned their
lesson with the earlier SP?s. Following the release of SP4, from
now on only the NT team itself will be allowed to ship core DLL?s
and drivers for the O/S. That will in itself create significantly
more quality control over the current situation where everybody
and their brother in MS seems to be able to ship NT patches with
products.

In the testing we did, we were happy to see definite enhancements
apart from the many bug fixes. MS pulled many additional tools out
of NT 5.0, the NT Resource Kit, and NT Enterprise Edition. As an
illustration, SP4 contains a whopping 35 tools from the Resource Kit!

Some of these RK-tools allow you to debug the kernel, analyze the
kernel memory space and perform other diagnostic, monitoring and
administration tasks. Terminal Server user disk-space quotas also
have been culled out of the Enterprise edition. Note, that?s NOT
user quota?s for normal NT users, this is only a system to prevent
the profile of remote Terminal Server users to become too large.
You still need third party solutions to manage NT disk quotas, even
after SP4. Only in W2K itself you will have bare bones disk quotas.

MS included some Web-based enterprise management in SP4 that were
really built for W2K. The tools extract data from perfmon and log
files, and display them via HTML over the Net. Next is the Security-
Configuration Manager (SCM), you can create a template and a security
profile that you can then apply across multiple machines. SCM then
scans your LAN for systems that violate your security profile.

Another thing that was added to SP4 is Internet Explorer 4.01. They
also added IE Service Pack 1, which means now Distributed COM objects
can work through your firewalls as they can work through the HTTP port.
MS included support for the new Euro currency, just in time as the
Euro will be a legal currency coming January.

Some definite improvements are the new features that booting up &
shut-down are now registered in the event logs, and WINSADMN.EXE
now gets updated which allows the ability to delete single mappings.

SP4 comes in two flavors, the big one contains all the Y2K fixes needed
to get your systems fully compliant from the O/S side of things but
that leaves still your applications and your hardware open for error.

Now, what are the problems that were reported? Most of these came
through the NTSYSADMIN list that Sunbelt hosts. There are over 4000
subscribers and many of them are very sharp. You can subscribe over
here and read the last 30 days of messages via the web interface.

The Service Pack 4 problems reported up to now are:

---
Users have informed me (and I have verified) that there is an annoying
problem with folders on the desktop. They open the same size as the
previous folder (they do not remember size settings).
---
So far my only problem has been the complete lack of ONE solution to
install a 128-bit, Y2K version of SP4. I had to "merge" the 2 Service
Packs (copy the 128-bit OVER the Y2K) to run it... that's sad.
Other than that, it's been great here... as long as the hardware is
current.
---
I would like to apply SP4 on our main NT4Server system, but I'm
afraid of SP4, and won't apply it. The reasons are many NT
(Servers, EE and Workstations) around already crashed by SP4.
---
Our problem is with ClearCase 2.11. We run clearcase with DiskAccess
(For NFS mounts). When SP4 was installed we were able to view all NFS
points, however clearcase was able to set the views, and mount most
VOB's but you are unable to view anything. It hangs the explorer and
basically makes my life hell. Rational is looking into the problem.
---
I have bad problems with the ODBC drivers on a BDC which is pretty
fresh. It was just set up and NT SP4 was installed on it right after
that. Now I can't install Exchange on it... tried our Office97 kit
(because of the ODBC part) - same result. Well by the way... I also
tried to install IE4.01 SP1 on it... no way!
---
We found that SP4 Broke the ODBC drivers connected with our product
SiMON that we now need to look into and fix. Thanks Microsoft.
---
We have been unable to run WhitePine MeetingPoint (3.0.6 or so) with
SP4, while it has been running well with SP3. The problem has been
confirmed by White Pine, and a solution should be in version 3.5.1,
which will be available in a few weeks.
---
I installed the 128 bit version of the service pack then the Data
Access Components and ran y2ksetup.exe which said I was all set for
year 2000. So I don't understand the need to "merge" the 40 bit and
128 bit versions. However, the only problem I have had is with
Hummingbird Exceed on a WS. The telnet portion "Host Explorer" icon
that gets put on the desktop would not work. I called tech support
and was given a URL for a patch which I have downloaded and installed,
but still does not work.
---
Restoring a SP4 image created using PowerQuest (and I heard Ghost)
results in NON-Fatal errors being returned on the restore. Personally,
NON-Fatal errors are like driving with a nail in your tire and ignoring
it. PQ has been notified and is aware of the problem.
---
After installing SP4 on a server We no longer can get the server and
workstation to talk. When SP3 is reapplied everything works normally.
All protocols and services remain the same. Only the SP was changed.
Don't know why this is yet.
---
I have SP4 installed on 3 servers and 3 workstations, and I experienced
the following problems:
1) SQL Server 6.5 - I could not install SQL Server 6.5 without a non
critical error.
2) RCP broken - Some scripts using the RCP command don't work anymore
if you use . as the destination file.
---
If installed, previous (before 10/21/98) versions of HASP - a common
dongle-based license control product - will blue-screen the machine
after a SP4 upgrade unless a new version of the HASP software is
installed first.
---
I installed the 128bit version of SP4 on Compaq Deskpro 2000
5133/5200 workstations and prolinea 5100 workstations I had no problem.
But when I tried to install the SP4 on a Proliant 1000 server (for
test purposes) configuration 486 DX 2/66 , 128M RAM, SMART2 controller,
with 7 / 4.2G hard drives with RAID5. The server refused to come up
after that , It kept cycling at the hardware detection stage. I did not
bother to research why this was happening and repaired the
installation. I suppose the hardware I was using was too old. Anyway I
will try the same on a Proliant 1600 server and see what happens.
---
A possible problem I have found is with backup exec 6.11 build 202.
After applying SP4, be engine has started to randomly hang during
scheduled backups. BE GUI reports the tape drive is still in use by
another job. The engine must be restarted thru services to get another
backup to run. Still investigating this prob, about to install 6.11
build 204.
---
Just to add, Backup Exec 7.2 is working fine with SP4 for me. I installed
it after SP4, though.
---
I experienced a problem with Lexmark's network printer support. Upon
reboot after installation of SP4, the lexmark process "lexstart.exe" or
"lexbces.exe" pegged the CPU at 100%. These processes could not be
killed through Taskmanager. Uninstalling did not remove the port monitor,
and consequently these processes. Upgrading to the latest version fixed
the problem.
---
After installation of SP4 one of my servers started to loose nonpaged
memory. After running for a few days it started to log "The server was
unable to allocate from the system nonpaged because the pool was empty"
events and then just died. I found out that it was the ICQ Groupware
Server that leaked nonpaged memory (I'm not sure I have the latest
available build, but it seems to me that ICQ Inc currently doesn't work
on this product very hard, so this problem may still remain in the latest
version). But I expect this problem to occur with other apps. So the
question is, did anyone else notice nonpaged memory leaks with SP4?
---
When you try to install the Minolta printer, none is shown. Then if you
look in all the inf files in that directory, none of them have anything
to do with a Minolta printer. Does anyone know anything about this?
Is there anyone at Microsoft that you can ask about this?

OK, these are a sample of problems reported. Most of them a nuisance
but we do not see Blue Screens Of Death all over the place like we saw
with SP2. We?ll keep you up-to-date with the latest news about SP4.

* MICROSOFT TECH ED 1999 LOCATIONS

Microsoft?s Tech·Ed shows are generally the best for System Admins.
I have been at a few now, and they are definitely worth it. Much more
than for instance COMDEX or local trade shows, as it?s more focused.
In 1999 in the USA it will be Dallas, TX from May 21-28. For Europe,
it will be in Amsterdam, at the RAI Center on the 6-th to the 9-th
July 1999. At the Tech.Ed?s you'll receive all the information you
need to stay connected to Microsoft. Plan this in your ?99 schedule.

Tech·Ed 99 has been expanded to include three additional days with
over 75 sessions, for attendees focusing on IT operations management.
Learn how to effectively deploy, manage and maintain BackOffice and
Windows NT based environments. And, an additional five days with over
200 sessions, for developers who are writing applications targeting
the Microsoft Windows Platform. There is an interesting Trade Shows
at the same time as Tech.Ed with many specialized Third Party Software
Developers. More info about the US Tech.Ed at the US Website at:
http://events.microsoft.com/isapi/events/event/menu.asp?s=49100
And for the EU it?s: http://www.microsoft.com/europe/teched/

From my perspective the only show that is a MUST SEE.

* SALARY SURVEY FROM INFOWORLD: DO YOU MAKE ENOUGH?

One of the USA?s largest and most influential computer magazines
published the results of their InfoWorld Annual Salary Survey.
The results of this year's survey came out that the average IT
professional earns $65,669 per year, and has a raise of 8.9 percent
per year -plus- a profit-sharing bonus. To compare to see if you
make enough, click your way to InfoWorld?s website and compare:

* NT 5.0 HAS COMPLETELY NEW DRIVER MODEL

Win2K is colossal. Bigger actually than the large IBM mainframe O/S-es.
They have done a significant rewrite. One of the highlights is the fact
that none of the hardware device drivers from NT4 are compatible with
NT5. In other words, it?s a completely new hardware model requiring
new drivers across the board. You -can- use NT4 drivers, but that
stops you from utilizing DirectX6 and so any hardware accelerated 3D
capabilities. The unified Windows Driver Model (WDM) should bring some
relief though, as all work done for Win98 can be used for W2K. Still,
you want to be very sure that all your hardware has tested drivers before
you move to W2K. Create test environments long before you plan to really
migrate to W2K and put them to the torture test!
-----------------------------

* NT SERVER IS NOT QUITE THERE YET COMPARED TO UNIX

NT Server 4.0EE scored at sixth place in a recent review where it
was compared to the popular Unix flavors. The scorecard, which DHBA
frequently updates, may be seen at their World Wide Web site at
http://www.dhbrown.com/pdfs/osscorecard.html

4. "NT THIRD PARTY NEWS"

* NEW RELEASE 2.04 OF TRUSTED ENTERPRISE MANAGER

Trusted Enterprise Manager adds granularity to NT system admin tasks.
With TEM, you will be able to hand off those simple tasks that you
are plagued with such as resetting passwords, creating users, keeping
track of dormant accounts, and so on. With TEM?s powerful delegation
tools, you will be able to let users perform these tasks without
compromising security.

Now, with TEM 2.04, even more rights can be given out to users as well
as a number of other benefits:

- The ability to give permission to synchronize the domain
- The ability to give another user the right to delegate rights
- A powerful new TEM Exempt command that allows you to remove accounts
from a Trusted Managers authority without removing them from the
group!
- Total Global Management. Now you have the ability to set Global
groups managing other global groups which allows you to setup and
plan for NT 5.0!

A new, user friendly client interface with a larger quickview screen
for even more on the fly information on user accounts as well as a
properties tab menu that allows easy navigation. TEM allows you to
generate a number of reports you can run that give specific, hard to
find information on user accounts. Also, all data can be imported into
Microsoft Access, where TEM has its own set of Tables and filters that
allow you to manipulate the data to create numerous other reports.

On top of all this, TEM will allow you to prepare for an NT Security
Audit and pass it. By being able to get rid of power users and account
operators, and instead giving them just the rights to perform exactly
what they need to; you eliminate security holes out there and beef up
the security as well. (Contributed by Jay Farrell). Here it is:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/tem.htm

* DOUBLE-TAKE: MIRRORING VIA DOUBLE NIC TO OFFLOAD TRAFFIC

One of he most popular packages to create a fault tolerant environment
is Double-Take: Windows NT Magazine Editor?s Choice for mirroring and
fail-over. Many customers have expressed an interest in being able to
specify a route for Double-Take replication traffic. That eliminates
any possible Double-Take impact from the network all together.

You can do this in two different ways with Double-Take, but in both
cases you need -two- NIC?s in the source and target machine. There are
two methods to get the traffic on the dedicated NIC?s: 1) Host File
Method and 2) the Manual Add Method.

1) You can redirect the traffic using the host files on the source
and target, by modifying the host file on the target and add an entry
for the target that specifies the target?s IP Address. Likewise, on the
target you add the IP address of the host file on the source.

2) Start the Double-Take service on both source and target. Bring up
the DT Client, use Add New Server, and add the Target?s name and its
private IP Address.

To try this out in your own environment, get the latest Double-Take
30-day eval at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/dtake.htm

* NEW -LAN- Y2K COMPLIANCE CHECK UTILITY: YES2K
Only 398 days to Jan 1, 2000

Sunbelt as always has done research on the market to find a solution
that fits well with your NT sites. There is still a very high
percentage of PC workstations on DOS, Win3.1 and Win95/98 that may have
Y2K problems. What you told us you need is a tool that goes out on your
LAN and reports back which machines are OK, which ones can be fixed and
which ones are liabilities. Yes2K ?does- this at a low cost.

Yes2K analyzes PCs for year 2000 hardware problems. It repairs non-
compliant systems without requiring a costly hardware upgrade. Yes2K
includes complete central control for network workstations, and can
significantly reduce your hardware compliance costs. For large
organizations, the cost benefit chart shows how Yes2K significantly
reduces your Year 2000 costs.

Yes2K checks and detects flaws in your hardware regarding Y2K
compliance. It looks at the BIOS, CMOS and real-time clock. Yes2K is
the only tool its kind (in the Y2K category) that -when possible-
corrects the bug by reminding your users to enter the right information
when the time comes.

The fact you can centrally deploy it, and get centralized reports make
it a great tool for continuously testing your Y2K compliance. Testing
is not done once, but rather on a regular basis to make sure your LAN
is and ?stays- compliant.

Yes2K will tell you that a PC is so old that the BIOS will not accept a
date after Dec 31, 1999 allowing you to budget for a replacement early.
What happens more often is that the BIOS itself will accept dates later
than that, but fails to roll over. Yes2K will warn your user to do that
and manually enter the time and date (just once) the moment is there.

Yes2K loads an EXE-file in the config.sys of the PC and this file does
a date check every boot time. It will prompt the user to enter the
right data & time. Yes2K looks at the CMOS in the PC and inserts the
right data first, then pulls itself out of RAM. The most important part
is that you will save an incredible amount of time with Yes2k. It
automatically launches from your file server when your users log in. It
comes with a GUI that is called the Compliance Manager and shows you
the test results for each of your connected PC's.

You can download a FREE copy for one workstation to try it out. There
is a FAQ on the page with more information about Yes2K. This product
was given a 5-Star Rating by Ziff Davis and was given a -VERY GOOD- by
InfoWorld. Both reviews are on the Sunbelt Website. Check it out!
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/yes2k.htm

* AUTOPILOT NOW WORKS ON SP4 AND BOOSTS EXCHANGE PERFORMANCE

Last issue we reported that AutoPilot did not support SP4 yet, but in
the last few weeks this was fixed and we have a working version that
supports both SP3 and SP4. More over, we have found that many MS
Exchange users get excellent results with AutoPilot on their systems.
If users complain with things like: "Outlook 98 is slow", or "I get
slow response times" you might want to try out the new AutoPilot.

This is a success story of one of the Exchange AutoPilot users:
The Preview Pane option in Outlook 98 was annoying because of the
extra second or two it took to preview messages. After AutoPilot,
the previews are instantaneous!" AutoPilot is a software-only automatic
tuner that boosts NT performance. Get the new 30-day eval here:

7. "Y2K WATCH" Only 398 days to Jan 1, 2000

Many organizations are now determining how to deal with the Y2K issue
and SP4. Since the SP4 tests are positive, I would follow Microsoft?s
recommendation and update all your NT workstations and servers with
SP4 after thorough in-house testing. SP4 -does- tend to confuse some
third party applications so be careful to make sure nothing in your
environment breaks. After applying SP4, you still need solutions for
your applications and hardware.

Sunbelt has just announced we have selected one particular utility
that will make sure your hardware compliance is in order. It is called
Yes2K and centralizes the whole process. See NT Third Party tools
in this issue for more info.

That leaves your applications. If you are running an MS-only shop
that becomes a thorough check of the MS Y2K resource center and see
what you need to upgrade. But not too many people run only MS and
that is where the complexity comes in. There is no other way than
to individually contact your vendors and make sure their apps are
compliant. Utilizing tools to do a scan and find out what is on
your LAN and plug this into a database would be a smart idea.
You can use LanLicenser for this. It?s a part of MS SMS but also
available separately: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/lanlic.htm

Apart from everything else, it also makes good sense to see what
you would do if your power would brown out or if you will be getting
rolling black-outs (15 minutes no power out of 60) if there are
power shortages. We?ve got a year left so we?d better prepare.

Sunbelt will shortly come out with a package of a book, video and
CD for your personal Y2K preparation as a service to our customers.
