Win 2000 (NT5.0) Beta 3 RCO released
  This issue of W2Knews™ contains:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1) W2K BETA 3 RELEASE CANDIDATE ZERO RELEASED
2) END-YEAR SPECIALS
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi NT-ers, Two Hot Topics! (I use the abbreviation W2K for Windows
2000 from here on out).

1) W2K BETA 3 RELEASE CANDIDATE ZERO RELEASED

In a surprise move, MS _just_ confirmed they released W2K Beta 3,
Release Candidate ZERO (RC0).

RC0 shipped yesterday to a thousand OEM's and software vendors.
Jonathan Perera, the lead product manager for Windows 2000 Server
said it will be available to Rapid Deployment Partners at Microsoft's
technical beta site.

For people not completely in the know how MS releases code, this is
a sequence commonly used:
- Alpha code (rough)
- Beta 1
- Beta 2
- Beta 3
- Release Candidate 1
- Release Candidate 2
- Release Candidate 3 (if needed)
- GOLD code to manufacturing.
- Roll out.

Sometimes these are mixed and matched, so what we are now looking at is
a Release Candidate for the third Beta that is expected in Feb. What MS
is showing us, they are on schedule for the real release of Beta 3 Feb
1999. There may even be a Release Candidate 2 for Beta Three. It does
kind of get confusing at times don't you think?

Perera described this (early) version of Beta 3 RC0 as "fit-and-finish
work, aimed at setup and ease of use."

Asked for more detail, Perera explained that they made three major
enhancements:
1) a setup wizard for deploying Active Directory
2) driver support for additional multimedia devices
3) terminal services integrated more closely with the operating system.

Perera said: "The purpose of RC0 is to get detailed technical feedback"
The reason why Beta 3 is earlier than expected is the feedback from Beta
2.
"Suffice it to say, if you wanted to set up Active Directory on Beta 2, it
was tough. This makes it much easier. Across the board, I would expect a
user to have a much easier time with setup of the OS."

2) END-YEAR SPECIALS

Usually, vendors have specials going on at the end of the year that you
can take advantage of. Sunbelt is no exception so if you need to get rid
of some budget that you might lose otherwise, this is the time to call
your reseller or rep and ask for a Year-End discount. These can be
different for the separate products so simply call your rep and see what
they can do for you?

That's all for this NewsFlash!

Warm regards,
