Saturday Morning 07:00 - May 15,1999

Hi All,

Yesterday we had the kind of problems we like to have, but
our apologies for any lost time on your end. We fixed it.
Let me explain what happened.

The NT-list is now just under 300,000 and takes almost 15
hours to send. The NT-server is holding up fine under this,
but pushing it out takes almost a full T1 to do it during
that time. Next, you'd be surprised about the amount of
email addresses that fail to arrive the first time. Usually
30 to 40,000. The listserver software (called Lyris and very
warmly recommended: www.lyris.com) schedules to retry those
for a few hours later.

So, we told you about Melia and Print Queue Manager. Both
products were being downloaded many hundreds of times, all
at the same time that Lyris was pushing out another 40,000
list 'retries'. That was a bit too much for the poor T1
and many of you got time-outs and disconnected. Sorry about
that! Quite a few of you sent me email about it, but I'm
sure many more of you did not and were disappointed.

So, what we did to fix it was two things: First was double
our T1 capacity. We got a Cisco 2600 router that can handle
two T1's at the same time and load balances them. Our internal
capacity is now 3Mbit/Sec.

Second was to add an FTP-site for that 22Megabyte MELIA download.
(the developer of Melia offered us to use theirs, which is fed
by three T3's, so we got a really FAT PIPE there now). These two
fixes together I hope will take care of the bandwidth problem at
least for a while. [famous last words]

2) AUTOPILOT NOW SUPPORTS SP5

Oh, and like I said, SP5 was a breeze to fix for AutoPilot. It
even works better on SP5 as a matter of fact. If you want your
free Single Machine update this is the place to go. The only
thing we ask you is to re-register your name but that's all. This
is state-of-the-art performance boosting code. Here goes:

3) TECHED SHOW IN DALLAS

I will be at TechEd in Dallas, May 21 to 26-th so come and see us
at the Sunbelt Booth 133 and pick up a free CD with goodies. I'll
have a good look at all the new stuff out there and report back
to you in the next full newsletter with all the latest news!

That's all for the moment,

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman
