****************WHAT IS NTOOLS E-NEWS?******************************

Sunbelt Windows NTools E-News is the World's first and largest

E-Newsletter designed for NT System Managers that have the job to

get and keep NT up & running in a production environment. Sunbelt

launched this electronic newsletter early 1996. Every two weeks we

keep the Windows NT community informed and aware of new developments

of NT and 3-rd party NT System Management Tools. You get hints and

tips that will enable you to better utilize and understand Windows

NT/2000 and help you to pass your certification exams.

Via (separate) NTools E-NewsFlashes we will send you important

breaking news like new service packs, killer viruses, etc. Sunbelt

Software is the first and largest distributor worldwide of Third

Party System Management Tools for Windows NT.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

1. "EDITORS CORNER"

Hi NT-ers,

I will fly to London tomorrow (Sunday) to visit the NT'99 Show

in London and report to you from there what the goodies are I

found. Probably Tuesday you'll get the latest from the show floor

itself. If you plan to attend that show, and want to know if this

"Stu" is real, come to the Ben Chai Session on the 26-th. At 3pm

I'll present an hour about the best selling 3-rd party NT tools.

When I find other cool tools you may get a NewsFlash about them.

OK, one last time a quick notice about the book at the risk that

you are getting sick and tired of me talking about it . It

went SO fast that both the Sunbelt On-line shop and Amazon could

not get the stock in-house fast enough. Amazon has a few standard

messages (3-5 weeks delay) that cause some confusion when they

are temporarily out of stock and we've had many questions.

The publisher and I decided that since thousands of people might

risk not getting the first print, to include ALL THE SOFTWARE in

a special Second Print (just 7,000) as well. That will make everybody

that ordered in the initial wave a happy camper and not worried

about getting the full AutoPilot that they expected. Hope you can

now sleep at night. It may take a while to get there but it will!

If Amazon.com sends you a message if you still want the book, you

can be sure you WILL get the special initial offer. And just an

hour ago I received the following message that made my day:

"Stu,

Been a fan of your newsletter for years, even though I've rarely

(if ever?) bought anything from Sunbelt. However, I leapt at the

opportunity to buy your book, and while I haven't read all of it

yet, I've already found many useful hints and insights with regard

to WindowsNT 4.0 maintenance. It all looks pretty excellent and

written from a user's point of view, rather than in a dull, technical

fashion. I sincerely appreciate that. I see the book is doing well

and I am very happy for you. Good Luck!"

Sincerely and regards, Boyd Shermis

http://www.bsvfx.com

Thanks Boyd, I appreciate it very much. For everybody else, if you

have a few moments, Boyd does pretty cool visual effects stuff for

the movie industry. His site shows what he does, very interesting!

Next time, you will hear from me from the UK.

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman

PS: Our new Webmaster Dan updated Welcome Page a bit. Less

clutter and easier to find the stuff you need. Check out our new

2. TECH BRIEFING

* PERSONNEL EMAIL MONITORING GETS POPULAR

Yup, Big Brother has already penetrated corporate email. 31% of

75 corporate email managers already use monitoring software to do

either spot-checks or full-time scans of email. The main reason

is to guard corporate intellectual property and make sure they do

not get sued. Both ComputerWorld and the Wall Street Journal

reported on this topic this last week.

So that means that if you send out an email with the word 'resume'

in there, it might get cc'd to your personnel department and they

may want to have a chat with you to find out why you want to leave

and fix it. Email with jokes, (and hundreds of cc's) can also be

filtered and reported on. Not to mention stuff that deals with

harassment.

Email monitoring products have (built-in) lists with the well known

four-letter words. These are the co called 'expletive lists', but

you can put your own words in company specific lists. Some research

was done recently, and of course reading any kind of email costs

money. A large corporation did the math and found that a Monday

Morning Joke sent to their employees cost them a whopping $60,000

for just that joke.

Each corporation usually has an email policy, (which might not be

written but should be). In the USA, the rules usually are as follows:

1) The computer systems are the property of the company and can

be used for business use only

2) The Rules are clear what is allowed and what is not

3) They state to personnel that email is not private, and that

all email can be monitored

4) They explain that violations can lead to disciplinary action

So, technically, what is used to get this monitoring done?

Several products are already on the market. A high-end one is

MIME-Sweeper from Content Technologies. Another company that

does this is called Elron Software from Burlington, MA.

I was given a demo of a brand new email scanning tool for Exchange.

It's called CAMEO and is the sister of MELIA which reports on

Exchange use. CAMEO sits on a workstation separate from the

Exchange Server, you need to give it access to the Exchange

logs and then it does a scan. About 30,000 messages per hour can

be looked at so the speed is sufficient.

An interesting feature is that CAMEO really is an audit tool, so

you do not interfere with the stream of email through Exchange.

Emails with keywords in them can be forwarded to an email address

that you specify. One company that installed it found that 30%

of the email going our was in one way or another an infraction

of corporate policy.

It is only a matter of time before this kind of application may

be required by management, for better or for worse. You'll be

able to download a demo within the next few weeks to do some

testing in your own Exchange environment. But tread carefully

and make sure you have air cover from your corporate Personnel

Department and MIS management, or even Legal before you get

burnt. But the stuff you find in those emails... man!

3. "NT RELATED NEWS"

* SERVICE PACK 6 ELUSIVE

It still ain't here. Despite several rumors it might have arrived

at this point in time, MS has not released it. You'll see that

it arrives when I'm in Europe next week and I will not be able

to bring you the news. I have my spies however and they know where

to find me . It should be close now though. Stay tuned !

* BIGGEST NT SHOW IN EUROPE

The Windows NT Show '99 is the UK's most popular technology

exhibition and conference. The Windows NT Show '99 is in Olympia

between 26th and 28th October 1999. If you go, visit strategic

theatre 2 on Wednesday or Thursday at 1:00 P.M. and listen to Mark

Smith, editorial director/group publisher of Windows NT Magazine,

talk about Windows 2000 (Win2K) and beyond. Mark will provide unique

insights into the challenges and opportunities in implementing Win2K

into your organization. Mark will also present the results of the

Windows 2000 Adoption Survey, which shows how current NT customers

plan to use Win2K. More data on what companies and which sessions at:

http://www.itevents.co.uk/exhibitions/windowsnt

* NO Y2K SLOWDOWN IN MICROSOFT MARKET SPACE

In the same week that IBM reported that their Mainframe bizz was

slowing down noticeably, Microsoft profits jumped 30% last quarter.

Our software giant beat the expectations again, boosted by "awesome"

demand for personal computers that is expected to continue. Microsoft

Chief Financial Officer Greg Maffei said in an interview after the

earnings report that the company might exceed the Wall Street estimate

of $0.39 per share in the fiscal 2Q, ending in December.

With less than 12 weeks left in 1999, Maffei said Microsoft was

increasingly confident that the year 2000 changeover was not

causing a major disruption in software sales. "We think it's

something that's manageable and not something that's going to

have a dramatic impact on our business," he said in the interview.

From our perspective at Sunbelt, our 1999 Third Quarter revenues

were 40% over the same period of 1998 and the fourth quarter looks

like another 'Highest Ever'. NT Sites are buying PC's, Win NT and

NT tools like any other year, actually even more than any earlier

years.

4. NT THIRD PARTY NEWS

* MAJOR UPGRADE V2.5 OF SUNBELT DOMAIN REPORTER READY

Sunbelt Domain Reporter Version 2.5 now has some very powerful

new features:

- Configure, organize and manage your enterprise policies to

conform to your corporate standards

- Audit security parameters on all or a portion of your domain

structure

- Organize your corporate reporting details in a logical fashion

The problem you are running into is to maintain your corporate

policies. You're simply overloaded, overworked and always lack the

time to do the things you know need to be done.

Your management needs reports, perhaps related to a merger or an

acquisition but it is practically impossible to get your hands on

the data. Besides that, you need to know who uses what and with

what frequency.

Now you can fill out a set of screens with your corporate policy

(like ONLY 5 SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS) and then simply fire off SDR

to do a scan. It will report back to you with the exceptions,

pretty cool.

You can also define SCOPES, for example limit the reports to only

a set of machines or domains so that you get your reports back

much faster.

And something that should have been in there from the start, you

now have a container that you can fill with your FAVE reports, so

you've got everything in one place. Big time saver.

Features:

Windows® 2000 Preparation Container
