2. TECH BRIEFING

* FREE STRATEGIC ANALYSIS: AVAILABILITY AND DISASTER TOLERANCE

The last two NTools E-News Issues I have been talking about Disaster
Recovery and the difference between Synchronous and Asynchronous
methods to get data from a source to a target server. I was quoting
from a report that now has become available in its entirety. This is
an EXCELLENT analysis that you simply should download and print out.

This time it's somebody else, independent and objective that tells
us about Double-Take. Great data to have for many reasons. Here is
a small excerpt from the 12-page report.

"Today?s networking environment is characterized by a strong need
for high data and application availability. Business networks host
mission-critical applications, and any network downtime can be
extremely expensive. IS departments worldwide have implemented a
myriad of new products and topologies to try to guarantee sufficient
network and application fault tolerance.

"Often, these implementations have?at great expense?solved only small
parts of the availability problem, leaving major gaps in a company?s
overall data protection and accessibility schemes. The result can
be downtime that is still too high, and frustration throughout all
levels of the company. Complete protection for mission-critical
installations requires protection across four separate elements of
network and application architecture, application failover, protection
from data loss, continuous access to data, and disaster tolerance.

"Unfortunately, covering all of these elements is often expensive and
difficult. A new type of product has emerged that is changing the
nature of HA architecture implementation for a broad class of networks
?the High Availability Suite (HA Suite).

"In our opinion, NSI Software, Inc.?s Double-TakeŽ product is a premier
example of the High Availability Suite. It is a fully integrated suite
and a compelling product that offers outstanding capabilities in all
four of the core elements of availability, as well as having several
unique side benefits. When correctly and completely implemented,
Double-Take can provide up to Class 4 application availability,
which is sufficient for the majority of business networks."

The full FREE 12-page report is available via the Double-Take Page:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/dtake.htm

If you have end-of-year budget or need to get a quick Y2K disaster
recovery plan implemented, you can also get Double-Take at Gigabuys:
http://gigabuys.us.dell.com/store/catalog.asp?Manufacturer=NSI
(Note: If temporarily out of stock, shipment will still only take
3-4 business days. Remember you'll need a license for each source
and target server).

PS: I need to correct something relating to the latest issue. You
do not have true a true Class 5 if you cannot recover from a 'site
failure'. The issue is you can not get Class 5 unless the application
has 'two phase commit' built into it. But if you turn on two phase
commit, you are going to kill your performance. Interesting problem.

3. "NT RELATED NEWS"

* COOKIES CAN BE LINKED WITH EMAIL ADDRESSES: FIX IT!

Cookies are supposed to be anonymous, but in fact it is possible to
link a cookie with your email address. For the details, take a look
at: http://www.tiac.net/users/smiths/privacy/cookleak.htm and you'll
see what a leak this is!

Microsoft is already looking at this problem and tries to find a
solution for this hole that threatens privacy on the 'Net.

To temporarily plug the leak in Exchange Server 5.5, the setting in
Exchange Admin needs to be changed to allow only text messages to be
sent, i.e. disable MIME.

* SERVICE PACK 6/6A CONFUSION NOW CLEARED UP

Turns out the MS-website had a problem with propagation and a banner
page was updated on the download page that referred to 6a - when it
was in fact not yet released. The download link was in fact pointing
to 6.0 gold bits. SP 6a has been released, and downloads from today
will get the right binaries for both 40 and 128-bit versions. There
is also note on the site that tells you how to verify that you have
SP6a. The Winver.exe has been revised to allow the user to quickly
verify whether a system is running SP6a. How to do that? Simple!

1. Click Start, click Run.
2. Type "Winver" and press enter.

--- You will either see: ---
Microsoft(R) Windows NT (R)
Version 4.0 (Build 1381: Service Pack 6)
Copyright (C) 1981-1996 Microsoft Corp

--- OR ----
Microsoft(R) Windows NT (R)
Version 4.0 (Build 1381: Service Pack 6)
Copyright (C) 1981-1996 Microsoft Corp
Revised Service Pack 6a

Apart from releasing SP6a, MS also very thoughtfully created a
separate hotfix that takes a machine where you already installed
SP6 straight to SP6a. That prevents you from having to download
the whole SP6a. If you have more questions about SP6a, here's the
FAQ! http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/support/faqs/SP6faq.asp

4. NT THIRD PARTY NEWS

* TEM WAS BESTSELLING TOOL IN NOVEMBER 1999.
Two weeks ago I informed you about how Trusted Enterprise Manager
will continue to provide tremendous value in administering your NT
networks, even if you migrate to Windows2000. Here is the comparison
you can check out: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/TEM3_W2KComp.htm

I had expected there to be interest in TEM V3.0, but I just didn't
expect how much interest! Downloads of TEM went off the charts, and
once again, TEM was our best selling product last month.

We have been getting extremely positive reviews from those of you
who are installing and evaluating TEM 3.0, and the sales speak for
themselves. From what I hear, most of you are amazed at the power
of the TEM Directory Shadow Repository. This technology not only
allows you to perform a lot of critical, time saving task automation,
but the speed and accuracy of the reporting is incredible.

For those of you who haven't checked out this best selling product,
you can either download it at www.sunbelt-software.com, or check
out these features using TEM LiveDemo. This creates a Windows NT
Terminal Server session so you can play with the actual tool in
real-time. Check out: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/tem.htm

* ARE YOU READY FOR Y2K? NORTON2000 WILL TELL YOU

It's getting very close! You only have something like 25 days left
to make sure your computer and software is Year2000 compliant. If
you have been too busy with other stuff and not had time to do the
Y2K checking you really needed to do and now need some '11-th hour'
help, Norton2000 will handle that concern.

Norton 2000 makes it easy to resolve the three main year 2000
issues for desktops: hardware problems such as the BIOS and real-
time clock, commercial off-the-shelf application compliance, and
end user created data.

Key Features of Norton 2000 Corporate Edition:

* Finds Y2K anomalies in your important data
* Identifies, prioritizes, and reports on two-digit date calculation
anomalies in spreadsheet cells and formulas, database fields and
forms, and text.
* Scans Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, and
Clipper; supports all other file types via an unstructured file
analysis engine.
* Parses embedded Visual Basic and macros in Excel spreadsheets.
Audits your software applications for year 2000 compliance and
tests them against a database of known year 2000 problems

Tests system BIOS and clocks :

* Tests your system BIOS, real-time clock, and system clock via
a boot floppy that prevents the inadvertent destruction of data
and program configurations during testing.
* Fixes any BIOS/clock problems which can be fixed by software,
and tells you if you need to replace the BIOS.
* Protects data on desktops with a DOS-based BIOS scan that
enhances accuracy and avoids problems (such as time bombs in
applications) that Windows-based implementations can create.

Keeps database current with LiveUpdate:

* Automatically checks applications against a database of the
latest vendor compliance information
* Includes exclusive LiveUpdate technology, which will keep the
applications database current automatically with the latest
vendor-reported problems and fixes.

Supports central installation and administration:

* Snaps into the Microsoft Management Console-compliant Norton
System Center
* Provides a single administrative console for quick and easy
distribution, reporting, and management throughout a LAN.

Provides flexible scanning/reporting options:

* Allows your organization to set its own criteria for measuring
risk and determining whether to fix individual desktop Y2K bugs.
* Generates automatic, customizable reports, with multiple levels
of detail.
* Includes project management and data analysis tools: Use Norton
System Center to schedule regular, transparent scans of user
data files, then import logs into a soon to be released SQL
Server database for graphing and analysis.

System Requirements for Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51 or higher:
Intel 80486 or higher
10 MB hard drive space
16 MB RAM

You can get product info or order the product online and download
it for $89.95 from: http://www.softwareshelf.com/norton2000.htm

* MICROSOFT EXCHANGE THIRD PARTY TOOLS ARE BOOMING

Exchange is getting a whole world just by itself. If you project
the growth curve, in 2004 about 50% of all corporate mailboxes
are going to have Exchange as the back end. That is formidable,
and the Exchange2000 future looks very bright indeed. The 3-rd
party market has a slew of add-ons and Sunbelt picked up two
more recently. One of these is MAIL ESSENTIALS FOR EXCHANGE 3.0

Mail Essentials offers real time email scanning/content checking.
That is as opposed to after-the-fact content auditing. You can
choose for either of these two architectures, with the two tools
we offer to handle this task.

Mail Essentials for Exchange is an e-mail security and management
gateway that installs on existing mail servers. V3.0 offers
tighter integration with Exchange Server and allows user-based
content checking for internet mail.

Mail Essentials 3.0 offers remote management and configuration,
the ability to authorize more than one person to monitor and
manage quarantined messages and a more user-friendly interface.

With the new version, integration with Microsoft Exchange Server
is so advanced that Mail essentials can be configured directly
from the Exchange Administrator, making it easier to install and
set up.

"The new user-based content checking feature allows organizations
to customize the filtering of email messages and attachments per
user, granting greater flexibility and allowing better corporate
email security and management. By building on the strengths of its
predecessor, version 3.0 maximizes efficiency and facilitates use."
Nick Galea, president of GFI FAX & VOICE, explained.

Microsoft Corporation welcomed the new version: "As Exchange
becomes more prevalent in corporations, products like Mail
Essentials also become increasingly more important," said Dave
Malcolm, group product manager for Exchange Server at Microsoft.

You can also approve or reject any quarantined email message from
your HTML client as an administrator. Once a message is quarantined
due to dubious content, Mail essentials alerts the administrator
and allows him/her to decide whether the email can be delivered or
not by clicking on one of three buttons.

Mail Essentials is one of the first products to offer a server-based
PGP encryption solution that allows users to automatically send and
receive encoded/decoded messages - encompasses various important
security and management features. Apart from content checking and
quarantining, it includes advanced anti-spam measures, interfaces
with popular anti-virus products, company-wide disclaimers, auto-
replies, tracking numbers, compression of all outbound mail, the
compilation of reports on e-mail use, transparent operation for the
user and administrator, and archiving all incoming and outgoing
mail to an OBDC database. 30-day eval downloadable at:

Pricing of Mail essentials starts at $250 for a 10-user (mailboxes)
version, and charges just $1995 for UNLIMITED mailboxes per site.
Check out: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/mailessentials.htm

And if you are an Exchange Admin, you should check out this space:
http://www.winntsolutions.com/exchange . There is a wealth of tools
that are very useful. You will find Email Essentials and also
AutoPilot in that list of about 80(!) products.

* PLANNING MASSIVE W2K ROLL-OUTS? CHECK ON TECHNOLOGY'S TOOL

They recently showed their product at COMDEX in the MS-booth. ON
Technology can automatically deploy, install and configure Windows
2000 Professional to existing PCs or to new PCs with blank hard
drives, from either NT4 or Win2K servers (they can also do it from
Solaris and HP-UX servers, but did not demo this) This deployment
does not require any interaction at the workstation itself such
as end-user login.

They can also deploy, install and configure applications (eg.,
Office 2000, IE5, Lotus Notes, SAP clients, etc.) to W2K WS,
similarly in an unattended manner. It's a pretty high-end solution
but very powerful.

The key benefit is that they can automate the deployment of Win2K
Professional and applications _without_ the need to upgrade any
servers to Windows 2000, implement Active Directory, or modify
applications to use the new Microsoft Installer technology. You
can also manage existing Win95/98 and NT4 workstations in a similar
way from the same system (single admin console, single client
database).

Note that this is not a GHOST-type system that deploys identical
images to all target clients, or a WinInstall-type system that
deploys identical "snapshots" of files and registry modifications
to all target clients.

Instead, their agents drive the standard vendor-supported native
install at target clients, using installation parameters (such as
NIC type, DHCP yes/no, or application parameters such as install
directory and "Install Spell Checker yes/no") entered into the
administrative console via drop-down menus, rather than via editing
of batch scripts. More info at: http://www.on.com/

was written from the ground up as a native 32-bit NT application
and service. Print Manager Plus allows quota and tracking of all
printing activity on a Windows NT Network. It will track pages being
printed from the following clients: Windows NT 4.0, 3.51, W98/95,
Windows 3.1, DOS, Macintosh, UNIX (all flavors), and OS/2. Print
Manager Plus provides you with extensive User and Group Quota
Tracking and alerting. Print Manager Plus Reports:

* User quotas
