1. "EDITORS CORNER"

Hi NT/2000 Pro's,

Like I said, the MS momentum marketing machine is in full gear.
They just reported that they sold the first million copies of
W2K. There are also lots of success stories about whole companies
that moved over to Windows 2000 without a hitch. Beware of all
the hype though.

In NT production environments, it's usually an ad hoc, sprawling
and relatively unstructured mass of data that needs to be trans-
formed into a streamlined and manageable set of resources on W2K.
It's going to take time and planning. You may even need to get
dedicated software tools to get the job done. Take your time,
plan well which resources you are going to need, and test, test,
test!

This issue has a bunch of new releases of 3-rd party tools that
all aim to be pain-savers in managing NT and 2000. And we now
have a high-speed outsourced FTP server for downloads so that
if you decide to grab a tool to eval it's going to zip along.

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman

2. CERTIFICATION BRIEFING:

* MICROSOFT ANSWERS!

Last newsletter we covered the Open Letter to Microsoft. We
provided a link to the Coriolis website, and the responses
increased so much that Microsoft actually sent them a letter
and asked to post it, which they did. The letter was from the
Director of the of the Microsoft certification program. They
posted the letter which in turn created quite a stir. I think
you might want to check it out. The main site again is:

www.coriolis.com/tellmicrosoft

and Microsoft's response is at:

www.coriolis.com/tellmicrosoft/microsoft_response.asp

The Microsoft response is very interesting and cuts to the heart
of the matter--the fact that many people (most, in my humble
opinion) feel that Microsoft isn't playing fair with the
changes they are making. For MCSE's: Required reading!

3. "NT RELATED NEWS"

* MICROSOFT SPENDS US$5.5M PER DAY ON WHAT?

You may remember our NTools E-News of Nov 16, 1998. I warned of
an impending change of Microsoft's business model toward one
based on subscriptions. At that point I was thinking about a
monthly fee for maintenance and upgrades of your O/S and Apps
but MS is taking it even one step further.

Network World reported that since January, Microsoft has been on
a daily investment binge of more than US$5 million. That's an
expensive habit. What are they scoring? Bandwidth, Vendors and
Web services so that they can morph themselves into a supplier
of Web-based software services.

Between January 11, 2000 and March first this year, MS invested
more than $250 million in seven outfits, and dropped more (unknown)
cash in another three. Most of these were in e-commerce Web sites.
This is by far Microsoft's most aggressive move into the B2B
(business-to-business) market, which Boston Consulting Group
expects to generate $2 trillion in 2003.

If one is sitting on 18 Billion in cash, that can be used as a
strategic weapon. If you look at the pattern of the MS investments,
you can see that they represent the MS transition from shrinkwrap
software to Internet services. In other words, MS is going to
be more of an ASP. (Application Service Provider). The software
will live on the Internet, hosted by MS-controlled servers and
are accessed via the Web.

You will see all of this come out when Microsoft unveils its new
model for software services. It's called Next Generation Windows
Services (NGWS) and should see the light later this year. So,
will MS be the new landlord collecting your monthly app-rent? Let
me know what you think. Email me at [email protected]
--------------------------

* STILL VERY FEW APPS FULLY W2K CERTIFIED

Microsoft has tightened the certification program for W2K apps
considerably. Veritest is the outfit administering the testing
and quite a few developers have failed their initial tests.
That is why Veritest has published the Top 10 reasons an App
fails the tests first time through. You can find that here:
http://www.veritest.com/mslogos/windows2000/index.htm

Recently Backup Exec from Veritas and NetIQ's App-Manager were
certified, with the latter being the first to be certified for
W2K Advanced Server. Obviously thousands of existing NT apps
will run on W2K, but getting through the certification is not
as easy as it used to be, especially for W2K server. For W2K
Pro, the amount of approved apps is now 25. That's not a lot
if you look at the tons of Windows software out there. But
getting the desired W2K reliability apparently requires some
sacrifices.

* CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT? MICROSOFT ITG USES NEW ECM

Are you running a large server farm? Like 50 servers or more?
Well, in that case you have you have undoubtedly by now run
into a headache only known to the 'happy few'. You need to
make sure all those boxes are configured correctly or else
support becomes totally impossible. Here is a new way to
deal with this problem.

Configuration-related issues have become business-critical.
The wrong configuration can impact your uptime, productivity
of IT staff, and the ability of your enterprise to function
efficiently.

Until now, there has been no automated way to identify any
configuration problems across your enterprise before they
impact service levels and generate support calls, or to
quickly pinpoint the cause of configuration issues for faster
problem resolution.

By collecting detailed information including Registry, Services,
Hardware, Software, Service Packs, Hot-fixes, TCP/IP, Shares,
Processes, and more into a central repository, Enterprise
Configuration Manager (ECM) can pinpoint and correlate config
issues across your Domains.

ECM performs these functions and carries them to the next logical
step. The ECM Compliance Manager allows you to create Exception
Reports that identify machines configurations that fail to comply
with your enterprise standards.

To further aid in setting compliance standards, ECM provides
tools that automate routine administrative tasks such as changing
the Local Administrator password, changing the Service Account
used to run Services, and changing the Service Account passwords
across your enterprise.

Best of all, ECM shows you its value within days, not months.
ECM's ease of installation and configuration allow you to reap
the benefits of configuration management now, not after a lengthy
and expensive implementation and integration process.

One of the world's largest sites, Microsoft ITG licensed 3,000
copies of ECM in January 2000 and some very large Oil Companies,
Citicorp, Rabobank, and Caterpillar also use the product. Fast

5. HINTS AND TIPS: A $99 PC, CONVERT PDC'S.

A $99 PC? Yes. Netpliance sells an Internet Device that can be
hacked into a fully functional PC! http://www.netpliance.com/
Wired broke the story and has a link how to hack the box:
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,34977,00.html?tw=wn20000316
--------------------------

I have seen a tool that will convert a PDC to a stand-alone without
having to reinstall. I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but it
may be worthwhile. The link to it is:
