Sunbelt Network Security Inspector: 5-Star Award

IT Week Magazine wrote: "This software package can detect over
2,500 network vulnerabilities, and it wins our Editor's Choice
Award for value and security." We agree. SNSI literally uses a
military spec database that many three-letter U.S. Government
agencies use to secure their networks. But we license it per
admin seat, not IP (!) to keep it affordable for SMB companies.
This is a tool you should not be without. And if you get a 100-seat
license of CounterSpy or Ninja, you get it even at no cost. (PDF)

CNN: '9 out of 10 e-mails now spam'

"Criminal gangs using hijacked computers are behind a surge in unwanted e-mails peddling sex, drugs and stock tips. The number of "spam" messages has tripled since June and now accounts for as many as nine out of 10 e-mails sent worldwide, according to U.S. email security company Postini. As Christmas approaches, the daily trawl through in-boxes clogged with offers of fake Viagra, loans and sex aids is tipped to take even longer."

Sunbelt Now On VirusTotal

Our Prez Alex Eckelberry wrote in his blog: "Our CounterSpy 2.0 beta technology has been accepted as one of the scanning engines on VirusTotal. This is a big honor for us and we're thrilled to be part of this community! If we don't catch a virus, don't be surprised, as the CounterSpy 2.0 engine is fairly specific to spyware. However, we continue to add antivirus capabilities to it. I'll be blogging next week on the CounterSpy 2.0 platform itself and what type of technology it is."

TECH BRIEFING

Mac OS X Spyware Sample Spotted

Anti-virus researchers have spotted the first signs of an adware/spyware program capable of launching browser windows on Apple Computer's Mac OS X. According to a warning from F-Secure, a security vendor in Helsinki, Finland, the proof-of-concept program could be silently installed on a Mac's account and hooked to each application used by that account. eWEEK has the story:

Microsoft Launches Distance Learning Initiative

Microsoft launched on Nov. 14 its Microsoft Official Distance Learning initiative (MODL), a blended learning program that uses Microsoft Office Live Meeting to conduct MCT-led classes, which students then reinforce with self-paced homework assignments and scenario exercises. MCPMag published it first:

Cray Builds New SuperComputer with AMD and Linux

Cray, AMD and Linux just got a collective $250 million boost in the arm from the U.S. government. Cray and IBM are splitting a huge $494 million grant from DARPA, to develop the last leg of their rival next-generation supercomputers, and Cray is going to be building its uncommon machines out of AMD chips and the Linux OS, that will scale to north of a sustained 10 petaflops by marshaling hundreds of thousands of processors in a hybrid architecture that combines both scalar and vector technologies.

IBM is using its next-generation Power7 chip, AIX operating system, General Parallel File System, Parallel Environment and interconnect and storage subsystems. The DARPA program is designed to improve programmer productivity 10 times over what it was when the program started in 2002.

WINDOWS SERVER THIRD PARTY NEWS

What's New In The CounterSpy V2 Engine?

We asked you about six months ago what you thought would be the biggest threat a year down the road. Your majority answer was 'blended malware'. When we saw that, we decided we'd better get ready for that. This is why the engine in CounterSpy was completely rewritten, and also why it took a little longer. We needed to be ready for blended threats, so apart from spyware we also needed to catch viruses. To do that, we needed to be 'at or below' the level where malware now operates.

That means kernel level, and this is not trivial. Our Dev Team has worked their asses off, and come up with a really new hybrid engine that does both spyware and at the same time is able to identify and kill viruses with the new VIPRE technology we created. Sunbelt is now recognized as a legit member of the AV community. Keep in mind that this is a 'baby AV engine' and a lot of definitions still need to be added. But you will already see tremendous detection improvements!
http://www.wservernews.com/061204-Hispasec

Anyone can take existing spyware code and bolt on a separate antivirus engine, and call it 'now with antivirus'. It is a much bigger challenge to take the time, and integrate the two into one, much more efficient engine. But we like to do things 'right the first time' here at Sunbelt.

So, The CounterSpy V2 engine is a hybrid that checks for and can remove blended malware. It also has the world's largest database of known malware, viruses and now includes signatures of rootkits. We have also included a very large whitelist, to prevent false positives, and last but not least, we have powerful 'scan & clean on boot' technology that loads before the OS does and can kill anything we tell it to, including rootkits that are in the database. This is an immense improvement over any other first generation antispyware out there, and we can truthfully say that this is now second-generation antimalware.

Throw in the fact that we now have incremental threat-database updates which makes the traffic a lot less, and (for home users) connect time to our servers dramatically shorter, and we have a winner with V2.

So now, are you willing to run our Beta 4 for CounterSpy Consumer 2.0? No forms to fill out. Support is via [email protected]
