Deploy Vista Or Windows 7?
The next Windows flavor will be called (drumroll... "Windows 7!" This is a
lot like Apple does it, i.e. capitalizing on existing code name recognition
and simply adopt the code name as the final product name. (Sunbelt did the
same with Ninja by the way). The "7" moniker is not so surprising really,
as a trip down memory lane shows it's the next major release in a series
that started with Windows builds of the past.
To reach the magic number 7, they tallied all Win9x versions -- 95, 98,
98 SE and Millennium -- as Windows 4.0. By that reckoning, Windows 2000
is 5.0 and Vista is 6.0. Mike Nash, vice president of Windows product
management, explains here how they got there in more detail:
http://www.wservernews.com/081020-Why-7
During a Q&A session with some Gartner analysts Ballmer said that people
can wait for Windows 7 if they want to. He also said "Windows 7 will be
Vista, but a lot better", and here is one more Ballmer quote: "If people
want to wait they really can, but I'd definitely deploy Vista". Sure you
would Steve. Microsoft will be revealing all about Windows 7 at the
coming Professional Developers Conference in LA, Oct 27-30. At that time
we will go into more detail and we'll be able to answer the question if
waiting for Win7 is going to pay off. The code is supposed to hit final
release by the end of 2009, worst case early 2010.

Warning: Microsoft Security Fix Is Really Malware
Scammers are sending trick emails that claim to have critical Windows
security alerts, Microsoft warned this week. These fake warnings describe
themselves as a new "experimental private version of an update for all
Microsoft Windows OS users". The e-mails then instruct you to download
an attachment, which is actually a malicious Trojan Horse program known
as Win32/Haxdoor. This malware records your passwords and credit cards
and sends this data back to the attackers. "As a matter of company policy,
Microsoft will never send you an executable attachment," Microsoft said.
"If you get an e-mail that claims to be a security notification with an
attachment, delete it. It is always a spoof." You might want to warn
your users once more. Social engineering attempts are not going to stop.

With Live Migration, Microsoft Hyper-V inches closer to VMware ESX
Last month Microsoft gave the first public demonstration of Live Migration,
which will be released in the next version of Windows Server 2008 and
Hyper-V R2. Live migration refers to the ability to move a virtual machine
from one physical host to another without taking it down. VMware's equivalent,
VMotion, is the foundational technology behind many of the company's
high-availability and load-balancing products. Read this article for more
on Hyper-V's latest addition and how it will help Microsoft gain momentum
in the fight to be top dog in virtualization: (Registration Required)

Microsoft To Release OCS Server 2007 Update In February
InfoWorld reported that Microsoft plans to add VoIP, collaboration, and Web
presence enhancements to the next version of its unified communications
software, which is due out in early February 2009. Microsoft on Tuesday
revealed details of Office Communications Server 2007 Release 2 (R2), which
customers should be able to download on Feb. 3, 2009, at the VoiceCon show
in Amsterdam. The software is currently in private beta testing. Released
just last year, OCS 2007 is the first software from Microsoft for making
VoIP a part of integrated communications services alongside corporate
instant messaging, e-mail, and videoconferencing, all running on one IP
network. It works in conjunction with Office Communicator 2007, its
accompanying desktop software.
In terms of OCS 2007's R2 VoIP capabilities, Microsoft will make it far
easier for mobile users and what it calls "nomadic" workers -- or people
who often work away from their usual office desk -- to use a mobile phone
as an extension of their fixed telephone line, said Moz Hussain, a director
of product management at Microsoft. More at InfoWorld:
