Welcome to Issue number 700!
The first issue was September 20, 1997 and we were called NTools E-News then.
Next, when Microsoft renamed WinNT, we morphed into W2Knews, and December
2005 we changed name again and now to something a bit more generic that
will hold through the years - simply WinServerNews... Hope to see you at
issue number 1,000! And here are the archives to all the way back to the
beginning, a blast from the past:

Guess Who Need To Retain Their Email Too?
Schools. Surprised? Well, read on. Recently Waterford Technologies released
the results of a survey it conducted on e-mail archiving in elementary and
secondary schools. The survey, conducted with administrators of K-12 schools,
teachers and parents, offered some interesting findings.
Michael Osterman, columnist for Network World and principal of Osterman
Research reported that 62% of school administrators revealed they do not have
a district policy regarding e-mail communications between themselves and
teachers. And a whopping 68% of these administrators revealed they do not
have a policy regarding e-mail communications between themselves and parents.
Other surveys shows that the vast majority of admins at K-12 schools were
not adequately informed about their district's email retaining policies.
And worst of all, it looks like almost 80% of schools do not have a plan
in place to be compliant with the new amendments to the Federal Rules of
Civil Procedure (FRCP). At the moment, about 50% of the States have new
rules for Electronically Stored Information (ESI).
The upshot, there are many Federal and state requirements to preserve e-mail
communications, plus a growing body of legal opinion that strongly supports
the notion that e-mail should be preserved for legal discovery purposes.
Schools are no exception - just like any other organization, they need to
preserve e-mail for purposes of legal discovery. We have a special 'Save
Our Schools' discount for Sunbelt Email Archiver. Ask your Rep or Reseller:

All Kinds Of Windows 7 News
This week showed a lot of news about Win7 after the PDC and WinHEC
conferences. Some pundits claimed that Win7 was lipstick on a pig
and that the future after windows would be cloud computing with the
browser basically replacing the OS. Others said that Win7 would be
a lot better as Redmond learned its lesson with Vista. Note that the
Vista brand has simply been dropped without much noise and the OS
name is back to Windows. Microsoft says that Windows 7 will use less
memory and power than Vista does and will start up and shut down
more quickly, among other improvements. Microsoft is not pushing Vista
for netbooks because of its larger footprint, but Windows 7 will be
able to comfortably run on netbooks with as little as 16GB of storage.
The new Win7 will also only have -one- 'Compatible with Windows 7
logo program instead of 4 different ones for Vista. And as of
November 1st, Microsoft is no longer selling any Windows 3.x licenses,
after 18 years (!). Win98 made it almost to 8 years, and Vista will
be lucky to make it to 3 years with Win7 nipping at its heels.
Microsoft is trying to re-establish trust with its customers and
vendors with Win7. Which brings me to the next SunPoll: "When would
you like to see a new dedicated newsletter about Windows 7 and in
which frequency?
- I want one right away, weekly.
- I would like Win7News right away, once a month.
- I can wait until mid next year but would like it weekly.
- Start mid next year monthly until release in 2010.
- Wait till it really gets released in 2010 and send it weekly.
- Other. I will email you my preference.

VIPRE Enterprise Deployment On 1,500 Desktops
One of our customers sent this last week: "We recently upgraded our CounterSpy
Enterprise Anti Spyware to Vipre AntiVirus/AntiSpyware to 1500 desktops,
laptops and tablets. The management is a breeze and the way Vipre is able
to stay in the background greatly reduces our "what is this" support calls.
We replaced CA Etrust 8.0 and couldn't be happier, not only is there much
less tax on the hardware but it actually works if a threat is detected.
Thank you Sunbelt!" -- E.C., Dir IS.

Intel Corp.'s Nehalem chips, slated to ship later this month, today were
called "blindingly fast" by an analyst who is using an early machine running
the processor. Steve Smith, vice president and director of operations for
Intel's digital enterprise group, told ComputerWorld today that the first
Nehalem chip, officially named Core i7, will be a quad-core designed for

day Intel officially launches the chip, several PC makers will begin
shipping desktops running it. Intel has been shipping previews of the
chips to hardware vendors since September. Full story at ComputerWorld:

Microsoft Warns Of Another Update To Windows Update
Microsoft is again warning users it plans to upgrade Windows Update, the
service most people rely on to download patches and other fixes. "Over
the next couple of months, we'll be rolling out another infrastructure
update to the Windows Update agent (client code)," said an unidentified
Microsoft employee on the Windows Update team's official blog. "This
update makes it possible for users to install more than 80 updates at
the same time." More:

Microsoft Assessment And Planning Toolkit 3.2 Released
Version 3.2 of Redmond's Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit is out and
it has a bunch of new features to help your organization to "go green."
MAP 3.2 identifies what servers, workstations, and network devices exist
in your network. Once this inventory is done, MAP helps you with actionable
reports and proposals to get the max out of your environment.
They call MAP 3.2 an "agentless toolkit" that will find computers on
a network and perform a detailed inventory of the computers using
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the Remote Registry Service,
or the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). And the tool not only
has the ability to discover all computers within Active Directory, it
can also discover non-managed machines such as workgroup members.
The new V3.2 expanded its assessment and includes SQL08, Forefront/NAP,
Microsoft Online Services migration, and provides you with a new Power
Savings Proposal which could actually save your organization a lot of
money. Download it here:

Double-Take Software Targets The Utility Data Center
Data protection specialist preparing to join the likes of Microsoft, EMC,
Hewlett-Packard and IBM in the promising utility data center market Data
protection specialist Double-Take Software is preparing to join the likes
of Microsoft, EMC, Hewlett-Packard and IBM in the promising utility data
center market, according to Chairman, President and CEO Dean Goodermote.
The company is best known for its real-time data replication and rollback
software but has also moved into data migration and the cloning of virtual
servers. That move was almost by accident, as customers found they could
deploy server replicas for more than just failover and fault tolerance,
Goodermote said. More at InfoWorld:

The 'Big Product' Did Not Get The Trojan...
Here's another Vipre success story. I am the Australian IT Manager for a
large US Multinational contractor. We have another mainstream enterprise
product to protect us from Malware, Spyware and Viruses. Guess what? It
failed to eliminate the Zlob Trojan in spite of having the latest updates.
All it did was report that the Trojan was resident - it did attempt to
remove the source but never fully succeeded and so the Trojan continually
reloaded. After a couple of hours of frustration I downloaded Vipre 15 day
trial (I use a fully licensed multi PC version at home along with SPF)
and within a few minutes the system was completely clean. Sadly I cannot
convince the Admins in the US of the value of Vipre as they have made a
corporate decision and invested substantial sums to roll our the dinosaur
we have. I am and will remain a Vipre/SPF fan - great products - well done!
PS: The 15 day trial has had to be removed now - orders from "above".
-- Cheers, Bob
