How Does Your 2009 Look?
As the old Chinese proverb says, "May you live in interesting times." These
times are certainly interesting in terms of technology and IT budget and
staffing issues. The latest ITIC and Sunbelt Software 2009 Global Forecast
Survey covers an interesting range of technology and business topics. Please
take 5 minutes out of your busy day to answer the questions to the best
of your ability. As always, anyone who completes the survey can receive a
free copy of the Report by sending an Email to Laura DiDio at:
ldidio@itic-corp.com. An Executive Summary will be posted in this
newsletter once we have tabulated the results, so all of you can see how
your organization compares to your peers. There are questions about Vista,
virtualization, IT Budget issues and Macintosh usage but don't worry, it's
point and shoot and you'll be done in no time. Thanks so much for your
participation! Here is the survey:

Win7: End Of Next Year
Microsoft late Thursday admitted that it was ultimately targeting the public
release of Windows 7 for 2009, confirming suspicions of an early release. In
a presentation for its Vista Velocity program, which speeds up and improves
the user experience of upcoming PCs, the company largely confirmed that its
attention for Velocity would be on Windows 7 for later in 2009. The focus
is "definitely" on having 7 ready for holiday 2009, according to Microsoft
director Doug Howe. More at:

"Why We Switched From Symantec AV to VIPRE"
I received this email a few days back:
"Hi Stu, Just thought I'd let you
know that we have switched our security solution to VIPRE Enterprise from
Symantec Endpoint Security. As a trial, Roger rolled it out on some of
the PCs in our office (a couple Vista desktops and a "legacy' XP Pro
desktop that had some "speed issues." There has been a noticeable
improvement in performance on all day-to-day tasks...lacking the overhead
imposed by Symantec, we'll probably be able to stretch the life of a
couple office PCs by another year. And as part of switching our security
to a single vendor, we've added Sunbelt firewall to our desktops behind
our other layers of security. As efficient as the VIPRE is handling our
PC resources, it also improved our "cash" resources. Talk about a lower
total cost of ownership affecting multiple parts of a small business!
We've been with Sunbelt since the early days of PestPatrol and I HateSpam....
We're thrilled to see the evolution of security from a company we've trusted
for over 5 years. Thanks for a great product!"

On-Premises Cloud Computing
It is official: cloud computing is coming to the enterprise. It's coming
fast and with lots of players. This week, EMC announced its first
cloud infrastructure offering, an information management solution designed
to help customers automatically manage and optimize the distribution of
information across global, cloud storage environments. The software can
either be purchased by itself and run on virtualized servers with VMware's
hypervisor, or it can be purchased with EMC's own hardware, which combines
x86 servers with high-capacity SATA drives.
Who else is releasing cloud computing on premises? Maybe Microsoft? Continue

Windows 7 In-Depth Review And Video: This Time Microsoft Gets It Right
In his hands-on review of the Windows 7 pre-beta, Preston Gralla decides that
Microsoft's upcoming OS shows great promise. Microsoft may call the newest
version of its operating system Windows 7, but you may want to think of it
as Windows 6.5. In overall look and feel, it mimics Vista, although there
are enough changes to make it far more than just a juiced-up service pack.
Anyone looking for massive changes or some kind of paradigm shift will be
disappointed. But those who want a better-working Vista with the kinks
ironed out and some nifty new features introduced will be very pleased.

Managing Single Sign-On Security Burdens In Windows
Remember the promises of single sign-on (SSO)? "One user account and
one password are all you need," the vendors proclaimed. Even before
Active Directory became mainstream, many vendors were touting SSO
solutions. But that was in the mid-1990s. Fast forward to today. We've
got Active Directory, eDirectory, Federated Identity solutions and so on.
But we're still having to manage multiple user accounts and passwords
in many areas of what we do with computer systems. Find out more in
this exclusive article:

TIP: Backing Up Virtual Machines In Hyper-V
Backing up servers has never been easy, but at least in the past you
could say that the process was trivial. Today, however, with the
introduction of virtualization into server environments, it's apparent
that this new technology makes backups ever more complicated while at
the same time making them more reliable. In this tip: Learn how to
execute backups with Microsoft Hyper-V, get insight into key features
and tips for avoiding common pitfalls: (Registration Required)

Implementing Security Audit In SQL Server 2008
SQL Server 2008 introduces new auditing capabilities that can be invaluable
to the DBA tasked with producing detailed audits tracking database usage.
Auditing can be implemented at the server and database levels, enabled
on individual database objects and saved to different formats, such as
binary files or the Windows Application log. This tip reviews the four
steps for setting up an audit:

Print Manager Plus Attains A 50% Saving On All Printing Costs
Software Shelf International, Inc. is proud to announce the results of a
recently conducted client survey which looked into the degree to which
Print Manager Plus - its leading print control and monitoring software -
reduces the printing costs of its clients.
The key findings were that: the software can save between 30% to 50% of
all printing costs, and that the software usually pays for itself, easily,
within its free 30-day evaluation period. This is because it has an instant
effect on the consumption of toner, paper, printer wear and tear and IT
resources.
"This all adds up to huge savings," says Software Shelf CEO, William Feeley.
"Print Manager Plus not only audits all aspects of printing, but also allows
an organization to fully control its printing with quotas, restrictions and
reports. This control and report data can be used to cut back on wasted
printing, restrict any aspect of printing, fully utilize current print
resources, and fully account for all printing expenses. And so, this usually
hidden expense can now be fully accounted for and controlled," he concludes.
Because Print Manager Plus allows companies to successfully audit, restrict,
quota and control print traffic over any network and any heterogeneous
environment, they can really control their printing and so not only gain
instant and complete return on investment, but also achieve a massive
reduction in costs.
Auditing & Reporting Include:
- Over 130 individual reports, statements, and charts.
- Reports by User, Groups, OU, Workstation, Server, Accounts, Client, Billing Code.
