Mark Minasi: "The Next Windows: Lucky 7?"
As part of Mark Minasi's ongoing series of "What's coming with Windows"
keynotes, he cooked one up on Windows 7 and he's giving it away on his Website
(He figured that with the economy in the tank, a lot of folks won't see it
otherwise). It's got some great ammo in it to justify skipping Vista, so
here it is:

How Does Your AV Compare with VIPRE Enterprise?
Sunbelt Software has recently (November 2008) done extensive internal
research into the performance and resource utilization of the most popular
commercial Enterprise Antivirus products on the market. The new charts show
the results of this comparison. The test configuration and the specific
versions of the software products are listed at the end. The tests were
done as objectively as possible and all products in this comparison were
purchased on the retail market, or downloaded as evaluation/trial copies
shortly before the test. Anyone can repeat these tests and see the results
for themselves.
The numbers tell the story. VIPRE uses half of the resources of the competition.
We took the average CPU % utilization of the other products during a scan and
VIPRE used 53% CPU compared to the average. Next, we did the same thing with
Memory used during scan and VIPRE used 51% compared to the average. How is
your enterprise AV product doing compared with VIPRE? Here are the stats:

How Does Your 2009 Look?
As the old Chinese proverb says, "May you live in interesting times." These
times are certainly interesting in terms of technology and IT budget and
staffing issues. The latest ITIC and Sunbelt Software 2009 Global Forecast
Survey covers an interesting range of technology and business topics. Please
take 5 minutes out of your busy day to answer the questions to the best of your
ability. As always, anyone who completes the survey can receive a free copy
of the Report by sending an Email to Laura DiDio at:
ldidio@itic-corp.com.
An Executive Summary will be posted in this newsletter once we have tabulated
the results, so all of you can see how your organization compares to your peers.
There are questions about Vista, virtualization, IT Budget issues and Macintosh
usage but don't worry, it's point and shoot and you'll be done in no time.
Thanks so much for your participation! Here is the survey:

Samsung Launches 256GB Solid-State Drive
As promised back in May, Samsung has begun mass production of its 256GB
solid-state drives for notebook and desktop PCs, complementing their
lineup which ranges from 8, 16 and 32GB for low-density designs and 64,
128 and now 256GB alternatives for the higher densities. The new drive
is not just bigger, but also much faster. More specifically, its sequential
read speed is slightly lower than that of its Intel rival at 220MB per
second but is faster for sequential writes, recording data at a whopping
200MB per second. More at TechSpot:

Top Five IT Spending Priorities For Hard Times
No company is immune to the economy's ebb and flow. So it's no surprise
that, in the face of a fearsome downturn, IT shops are scrambling to figure
out where they should cut. The big three analyst firms -- Forrester Research,
Gartner and IDC -- are busily slashing their IT spending projections. Just
last week IDC predicted that in the United States, IT spending will decline
to negative 0.9%, down sharply from a pre-crisis forecast of 4.2% growth.
So what are the areas where you can spend budget? ComputerWorld has them:

Tip: Solve SQL Server Errors And More From The DBA Trenches
There are some errors that DBAs are just bound to run into. In the second
part of this two part series, SearchSQLServer.com contributor Matthew

including primary filegroup out of space, failed server logins and trouble
bringing a database online. (Registration Required)

How To: Install an open source iSCSI SAN server inside MS Hyper-V
Several virtual infrastructure features require a storage area network (SAN),
but a real iSCSI SAN appliance can be very expensive. In this tip, learn how
to install an open source iSCSI SAN application inside a Microsoft Hyper-V
virtual machine, without having to dedicate an entire physical machine to
this task and find out how you can use it to store your Windows files with
the built-in iSCSI initiator and more! (Registration Required)

Factors To Consider When Using Blade Servers For Virtualization
Virtualizing on blade servers can be a great way to cut your customers' data
center space requirements as well as their power and cooling cost -- but it
can also introduce issues that don't exist on standard rack-mount servers.
Find out what factors you need to consider and how to guide customers toward
the right choice with this SearchSystemsChannel.com resource:
