New Beta Is Solution For Vista & Legacy App Incompatibility

We all know that running older apps in Vista can be a pain in the neck. Redmond just released a tool that solves this complaint. Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) lets you run legacy Win Apps, on Vista, including older applications built for W2K and WinXP by using virtualization technology. This is all based on a new blog post at the official MDOP Blog. You can also register for the beta at same blog.

"Our primary goal was to deliver an enterprise virtualization solution for the compatibility challenges that IT teams have with some of their line-of-business applications, during the upgrade to new operating systems (like Windows Vista)," according to the post, attributed to Ran Oelgiesser, a MED-V senior product manager. 2009 List Hygiene Probe

We started to check our lists once a year to make sure that we do not send it to invalid addresses, so we have a probe in this issue that will call home and report there is still some one alive at the other end. So if your security programs start to make noise, this is the reason!

Quotes of the Week

"In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm and three or more is a congress." - John Adams

Life After Symantec AV

A new VIPRE Enterprise customer said: "I was amazed to find that once I had uninstalled Endpoint from my desktop - VIPRE had picked up over 30 threats once it was installed. So far, I have been extremely impressed with the non-resource hogging agent - having installed and configured Endpoint here. I'm sure some of you will agree that this has been a problem in the past, particularly where laptops are concerned!" VIPRE Enterprise stats:
  • Low 50 Mb RAM used during scan
  • 13.3MB RAM used in idle with default settings
  • Only 113 Mb on disk footprint
  • Scan Speed of 13.95 Mb/sec (dependent on hardware)
It's clearly time to ditch expensive, bloated, old-style AV products. See VIPRE Enterprise performance compared to competitors in this chart:

IT Projects And Picks For 2009

In 2008, virtualization was phase one. In 2009, IT managers will need to get control of virtual machine sprawl before they take a serious look at tools that can be used to virtualize desktops and applications. This article discusses IT projects that need to be on your radar for this year and what your next moves should be.

Hyper-V and PerfMon: Even more useful counters

In a follow up to previous tip on PerfMon and how the measurement of virtual machine (VM) processor utilization doesn't jive with Windows' standard PerfMon counters, learn about other counters that help identify whether a Hyper-V host is overloaded, or just merrily accomplishing its assigned tasks. Also, find out how you can use them to determine whether the VMs in your infrastructure are running properly in aspects other than processing power. (Registration)

Some Dark Clouds On Azure Sky

The article talks about some frustrations with Windows Azure, the lack of an SLA (at least a timeframe for an SLA) and overall confusion about the new "cloud" technologies coming from Microsoft.(Registration)

Creating Powershell Scripts To Manage SQL Server 2008 Instances

If you wrote Windows PowerShell scripts to manage a SQL Server instance and its databases prior to SQL Server 2008, you would have to define objects based on the SQL Server Management Object (SMO) model to access various server and database components. But with the release of SQL Server 2008, accessing these components is now simply a matter of maneuvering through the server/database hierarchy as if it were a file directory. This tip demonstrates how easy it is to create and use PowerShell scripts and provides examples for you to use as a guide for managing SQL Server:

Microsoft Starts Testing Next Exchange

Microsoft has started testing the next version of Exchange. Microsoft said it was designed to run from the ground up as a hosted service that can work simultaneously with more than one business.

They also began early outside testing of some of the server products that will make up the next version of "Office 14". They are cagey about a release date. The new Exchange version, code-named E14, is in limited private beta testing as a traditional server product with "a select number" of businesses. Among its features is an improved Web client, Outlook Live, seen here in this article at CNET:

VIPRE Enterprise Customer Quote

"We only started rolling out VIPRE Enterprise last week and must say that the deployment is a breeze, especially compared to what I was used to in McAfee using ePO. VIPRE was also quick to spot some high risk issues that McAfee did not spot." -- C. F. IT Services
