More Than A Grand Per Workstation
The recent SunPoll about the cost per workstation was very interesting. A
whopping 32% of you spends more than $1,100 per machine. Here are the
results with 368 votes in:
- $300-$500: 8%
- $500-$700: 18%
- $700-$900: 24%
- $900-$1,100: 17%
- More than $1,100: 32%
Looking at a thousand bucks per machine, the thought comes to mind that if
you would run antivirus software that takes 20% of that PC's resources
hostage, the hidden cost of security would be $200 for that machine, not
even thinking about the yearly cost for the AV software itself. Wow.
One subscriber sent me this: "The Poll was interesting since the our CFO is
complaining that we spend $980 per PC with dual-video. Another poll that I
think would be interesting now that you asked how much we spend is; How
often do we replace our workstations and laptops? Due to the economy, we
have increased it to 5-6 years now when back in the day it was every 3 years.
It would be interesting to see what everyone else is doing now." So here is
the new SunPoll with exactly that question for you to vote on! (bottom right)

IE8 Released
It's out there. Better hold off deploying it until you have tested all your
browser-based apps and are sure that there are no incompatibilities. A few
of our developers using dual screen machines found that after the IE8
install, the second screen was disabled and uninstalling IE8 fixed it.
The Wall Street Journal PC review honcho Walt Mossberg, who stated that
browsers by now are the most important piece of software on a computer,
thinks IE8 is a big improvement over IE7 and a "much closer competitor to
its main rival Firefox." (which he still prefers over IE8 by the way)
IE8 looks to have improved stability, better compatibility with web standards,
easier navigation and search, and better privacy and security. Redmond also
leapfrogged competitive products with new features like Web Slices and Visual
Search.
According to Redmond, IE8 is supposed to stop "two to four times more
malware attacks than any other browser; cuts down on the time it takes to
complete common tasks on the web such as searching, mapping and sharing,
including navigating 15 of the 20 top worldwide sites."
Quotes Of The Week
"The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra".

Free Desktop and Application Virtualization Seminar
This one-day seminar was a great success earlier this month in San Francisco
and is coming to five more cities across the U.S. in 2009. Independent
industry analyst and blogger, Brian Madden, explains why desktop virtualization
is fast becoming the next big trend, and provides you with the tools needed
to determine if it is the right next step for your organization. He also
defines terms, separates vendor hype from reality, and describes real-word
scenarios that desktop virtualization can and can't address. Seating is
limited, find an event near you and register today!

Video Webinar: Ensuring Availability of Hyper-V Virtualized Workloads
Speakers: Bob Roudebush, Director of Solutions Engineering; Double-Take
Software Patrick Foley, ISV Evangelist; Microsoft
Server virtualization is a hot topic in the IT world because of the
potential for providing serious cost savings for customers. Microsoft
Hyper-V is the next generation hypervisor-based server virtualization
technology from Microsoft - making it easier than ever to take advantage
of the cost savings and management benefits virtualization can provide by
deploying it as part of Windows Server 2008.
To provide disaster recovery for virtual machines running on a Hyper-V host,
look to Double-Take for Hyper-V from Double-Take Software to protect your
workloads with real-time replication and automated failover for virtualized
workloads. Double-Take for Hyper-V allows customers to quickly recover virtual
machines after any type of outage without the expense and complexity of
clustering or shared storage.
Please join Double-Take Software together with Microsoft to hear an overview
of Double-Take Software and the Double-Take replication technology, as well
as a detailed explanation of the Double-Take for Hyper-V product. You'll
hear about Microsoft's virtualization strategy and specifically about the
Microsoft Hyper-V product. And finally, watch a video demo to learn how
Double-Take Software's latest product can protect virtual machines running
on Hyper-V.

How To Maintain IT Shop Efficiency When You're The Last Man Standing
The economic downturn has left IT managers feeling like they are the "Last Man
Standing" -- and in some cases they are. If you're one of them, your mission
right now is to figure out how to maintain an efficient shop when you're
crushed by an avalanche of responsibilities and have little or no help. In
this situation, not everyone has the luxury of thinking in the long-term
and some short-term solutions are needed. This tip offers career management
techniques that can help an IT professional survive in today's workplace.

As Azure Crashes, Cloud DR Is Top Of Mind
Though the vast majority of enterprises would have lost nothing during
Microsoft's Azure Services Platform beta outage last weekend, the event
teaches IT managers a valuable lesson as they plan future cloud strategies.
IT shops need to have a disaster recovery (DR) plan for cloud services just
as they would for their own data center. Learn more about this story and
why DR is necessary for cloud computing in this article.

Tip: How To Determine Your Virtual Machine Per-Core Ratio
How many virtual machines can realistically fit onto one core? This is a
common question and there are really two solutions to determine the answer:
either the customer can base their decision on industry-tested examples or
they can verify performance based on their own desktop PCs and estimate CPU
requirements. In this tip, learn how to evaluate desktop PC user performance
or use statistics from desktops in your environment to determine your virtual
machine per-core ratio: (Registration Required)

Guide: Assess The Damage After A Catastrophic Exchange 2007 Failure
Although server hardware is more reliable than it was several years ago,
catastrophic hardware failures can still occur. If a catastrophic failure
occurs on your Exchange 2007 server, it's important to assess the damage
and know how to configure a replacement server without losing data. Even if
you have Disaster Recovery (with or without Double-Take) experience in
previous versions of Exchange Server, you should also learn the proper way
to rebuild an Exchange 2007 server. Learn more in this step-by-step guide:

Microsoft Hyper-V vs. VMware ESX

any more. It's real, and your customers will be looking to you for guidance.
The tips, tutorials and other features on SearchSystemsChannel.com will
give you the knowledge you need to be your customers' trusted advisor.

InfoWorld Test Center Preview: Windows Server 2008 R2
The noisiest new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 promises to be live
virtual machine migration, as Microsoft seizes the chance to show that
Hyper-V is closing the gap with VMware Infrastructure. But there are
many reasons beyond server virtualization to take a close look at
Windows Server 2008 R2. Important enhancements are spread across the
board, ranging from IIS to networking to Terminal Services. There's even
a story to be told about R2 and the upcoming Windows 7, which gains
better virtual desktop integration and even secure remote access without
requiring a VPN -- though the latter feature, called DirectAccess,
requires the use of IPv6. More of this excellent article at:

Aberdeen Group: "Think Outside The (Red /Yellow) Box"
The Aberdeen Group (a well known analysts) did their own research and
stated that small companies should look beyond McAfee and Symantec for
endpoint protection. The study gives you ammo if you are looking looking
for third party validation of VIPRE Enterprise. The study itself is here:

VIPRE Enterprise On A Virtual Server Works Great
Here is part of a discussion on the VIPRE Enterprise Forum.
Q: Is there a quick and simple way to move VIPRE from one server to another?
A1: I recently used Microsoft SCVMM. Convert the physical server to a Virtual
and run it on top of HyperV... That way you keep all your settings, and it can
run all by its self on its own virtual. Migration is simple after that, it's
not tied to a physical box.
A2: I'm not sure how I ever lived without it... HyperV has revolutionized how
I handle apps like VIPRE that I want to isolate. I run it on a 2003 server
Virtual with 512MB of memory allocated. Runs great, updates from my WSUS
server, it's practically zero maintenance.
