Cloud Disasters Cause BCOD or 'Blue Cloud Of Death'
Subscriber Bryan Hunt sent me this: As I was perusing your latest WServerNews
and reading the article about Cloud Disaster Recovery, it caused me to think
back to a meeting I was in several months ago where a colleague noted that
Azure appeared to be the exact shade of blue that is seen on the dreaded BSOD
(Blue Screen Of Death). After a lot of chuckling over that, we wondered if
Azure would become known as the BCOD (or Blue Cloud Of Death). After reading
that article, I have my concerns. Let's hope that we don't have to "reboot
the cloud" every few days. Thanks." Bryan gets credit for coining 'BCOD'.
File Deduplication
Deduplication has shifted from being an interesting innovation to a core
technology for information storage. Disk backup data generally -should-
be deduplicated, but is it? The savings are just too great not to dedupe.
However, NetApp raises a valid point: Why stop at backup? Enterprises stand
to gain even more efficiencies by applying it to at least some production
data. Seriously, why not? You should look at this as an option to save
serious disk capacity.
How Often Do You Replace Your Workstations And Laptops?
Subscriber Samuel Brooks commented as follows: "One item that you left out:
"Based on Business Need". I have always subscribed to the concept that
'need' is what's important not changing because of the latest product out.
I just ordered 9 PC's to upgrade a department off a mix of Win2000 / XP,
most being 2000 because Adobe v9 does not support Windows 2000 and this
department needed to get "current" on the software because Adobe 4.0 was
having issues opening documents created by Adobe 9 and a new web based
application had parts of it that will not work with IE 6 on Windows 2000.
These Dell Optiplex PC's were between 5-1/2 and 7 years old and still
working but business needs required the change. Going from Windows 2000
to Vista should be interesting for some of the users who are task based."
And here are the results of the SunPoll with 644 votes. About half of you
change hardware every 4-45 years in the current economic conditions:
- Every 6 years: 13%
- Every 3 years: 17%
- When the computer dies: 21%
- Every 5 years: 23%
- Every 4 years: 24%

Why WiMax Should Be On The CIO's Radar
High speeds, freedom from carriers' app limitations will be chief advantages
-- when broad coverage finally arrives. Despite the billions of dollars
required to roll out a brand-new wireless network, the slowdown in the
economy, and the reduced share price, the president of Clearwire, Barry West,
is optimistic about the future role of WiMax in business. And he says tech
managers should put WiMax planning on their agendas now. Article in InfoWorld:

Tip: Five Questions To Ask When Planning A Cloud Architecture
The cloud computing model and its relationship to virtual desktops is
relatively vague. This is partly because both computing concepts are new,
and partly because they are both very flexible. The lack of precision when
planning for a cloud computing and/or virtual desktop environment makes it
difficult to decide where to start and in which direction to move. An
organized objectives-based approach will offer the best results. When
mapping out your cloud computing architecture, make sure to ask the five
critical questions in this tip before beginning your project:

During A Downturn, Will Certification Help Your IT Career?
When there's an economic downturn, a lot of people go back to school to
enhance their IT career. But is it worth giving up all that time and
hard-earned money to get a degree or certification? That question doesn't
have a clear-cut, black and white answer that those of us in IT often
seek; it's more like a dull shade of gray. Here are some factors to
consider before moving forward.

New VIPRE and CounterSpy Enterprise Version Released
Sunbelt Software is pleased to announce the release of Hotfix 3 agents for
both CounterSpy Enterprise and VIPRE Enterprise. The CounterSpy Enterprise
agent build number is 3.1.2710; the VIPRE Enterprise agent build number is
3.1.2711. Of particular note in this release are:
- Outlook bugs fixed
- Additional logic added for VirtuMonde detection and remediation.
- Changes for the new MBR rootkit detection.
- New logic for additional detection methods.
- Fixed start-up problems causing Server Busy messages and high CPU utilization.
This update is available for immediate download.
Sunbelt Software also announces the release of Build 3.1.3004 for VIPRE
and CounterSpy Enterprise. This is a service release for the Enterprise
service and console only. The changes for this release are:
- Fixed Send for Analysis so that it does not state "Unquarantine" in policy
selector screen
- Fixed bug in Threats and Quarantine grids that disabled the administrator's
ability to see the quarantine and scan history details for the items they
were viewing.
Many Enterprise customers have not yet upgraded to the latest Hotfix 3 agent
release, CounterSpy build number 3.1.2710 and VIPRE build number 3.1.2711.
Because we do not want to force an agent upgrade with this console release,
the console is packaged with the previous agent builds, CounterSpy agent
build number 3.1.2431and VIPRE agent build number 3.1.2434.
Our service and console build includes the agent, and we are unable to
de-couple this for 3.1. For 4.0, we will separate the console and service
from the agent, so that they can easily be updated separately.
Notes for how to address the agent versions are next. Download instructions
for the console follow. Steps for Agent Versions
If you have NOT downloaded the Hotfix 3 agent update (CounterSpy 3.1.2710,
VIPRE 3.1.2711), simply download and install the console update per the
download instructions below. No additional steps are required.
If you HAVE downloaded the Hotfix 3 agent update (CounterSpy 3.1.2710,
VIPRE 3.1.2711) and have Agent Updates ENABLED, after downloading and
installing the new console, the new agent update (3.1.2710/3.1.2711) will
automatically re-download when the service re-starts.
To check if Agent Updates is enabled, navigate on the console to
System|Updates. Under Update Settings, the first line, "Agent software
updates" will be set to Enabled. Note: Enabling Agent Updates ONLY
downloads the latest agent to your server. It does not deploy the
agent to workstations.
If you HAVE downloaded the Hotfix 3 agent update (CounterSpy 3.1.2710,
VIPRE 3.1.2711) and have Agent Updates DISABLED, you will need to
manually download the new agent. In System|Updates, click Update Now
and the new agent will automatically download to your server. Note: This
will only download the latest agent to your server. It does not deploy
the agent to workstations.
Downloading the new agent (3.1.270/3.1.2711) to your server will not
affect how you are currently deploying agents.
