Win7 News Roundup
- Redmond has launched a new Web site that aims to build interest in Win7
among developers and other IT pros. The site is called TalkingAboutWindows.com,
and it has numerous blog posts, videos, and Q&A's by the Redmond Win7 dev-team.
- RC1 is being rolled out and they are effectively giving away Win7 free for
a year as the code will not expire until June 1, 2010. If you run the beta
you are strongly encouraged to move to the Release Candidate. This code is
snappier and more polished than the beta, and looks pretty good. VIPRE runs
fine too, and we provide Tech Support. But things do change during RC's so
our devs may have to make some mods to VIPRE after Win7 goes RTM.
- They have a WinXP emulator in Win7, which has been both praised and bashed,
but is not part of RC1 and will be available later via a download. It's
specifically designed to help small businesses move to Win7.
- Acer UK marketing director Bobby Watkins said that Win7 would be available
on October 23 this year. A new Acer PC built around Windows 7 will come out
that day. They will give people a 30-day upgrade period to Win7 so that
customers don't wait to buy a new computer.
- WinXP will still be available after Windows 7 release. "OEMs that are using
Windows XP on netbooks will have the ability to install Windows XP for one
year -- 12 months -- after Windows 7 general availability," said Mike Nash,
corporate Veep of the Windows product management group.

Redmond Tightens Win7 Security For USB Drives
Looking at the Conficker worm using removable storage devices to spread,
Microsoft said this Tuesday it will change the way Win7 handles USB drives.
In the future, most USB drives won't be able to auto-launch any code using
AutoRun, they said in a post on their Security Research & Defense Blog.
That means if an infected USB drive is inserted, the AutoRun task will
not be displayed. Of course fixed removable media, such as CDs and DVDs
will still be able to use AutoRun. You will see this change in Win7 RC1.
Oh, and it's pretty sure you will see Win7 on new PCs this holiday season.
Here is the MS Blog with more detail:

Microsoft: No Vista SP2 For You Yet
ComputerWorld reported that Microsoft announced this week that it had wrapped
up work on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 but said it could be months before
users get their hands on the upgrade to the problem-plagued operating system.
Microsoft shifted Vista SP2 to what it calls "release to manufacturing," or
RTM, meaning the developers have signed off on the service pack and the
company has moved it into duplication and toward distribution. But when you
will be able to get your hands on it is not sure. More at:

Microsoft's Application Virtualization Tool: A Closer Look
With the recent release of Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V),
formerly known as Kidaro, Microsoft has added application virtualization to
its product lineup. Application virtualization is the process of taking a
single application and isolating it from the rest of the operating system.
It can run in its own sandbox, regardless of the OS, for example, Microsoft
Office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2003, Internet Explorer 6 and IE 7 can all
run simultaneously. This article discusses some of the requirements and
benefits of MED-V for application virtualization.
