Noteworthy: Win7 on MacBook Shortens Battery Life 70%

Who's to blame for MacBook's poor battery life under Windows? Some are quick to blame Apple drivers, but there's no consensus. Running Windows 7 on a MacBook shortened battery life from 5 hours under Mac OS X to just 90 minutes, or more than two-thirds. See this CNET test:

What Is SMPL? New Lingua Franca for Identity & Access Management - 8/20

Every system, directory and application has different terms and interfaces for managing user accounts, roles and entitlements but at the end of the day the same concepts drive identity and access management throughout a heterogeneous network.

Service Provisioning Markup Language (SPML) was developed to make it easy for one system to request changes to user accounts and entitlements from any other system - both systems just need to understand SPML. SPML allows integration between self-service portals, provisioning systems and target applications much more easily.

In this 'real training for free' (tm) webinar, Randy Smith will introduce you to SPML and how it can help you manage Identity and Access Management in your environment. You will learn about the interaction between:
  • Requesting Authorities (e.g. self service portal)
  • Provisioning Service Points (e.g. provisioning system)
  • Provision Service Targets (e.g. target system like AD, Unix, SAP or Oracle)
You'll find out how SPML abstracts the identity mechanisms of user account and entitlement objects through Provisioning Service Object Identifiers (PSO-ID) and Provisioning Service Target Data Identifiers (PSTD-ID).

He'll explain where you will find support for SPML in today's Microsoft-centric network and where to look for it in the near future. You will also see an example of SPML at work with a brief but enlightening demonstration of Quest ActiveRoles Server who is sponsoring this training event.

SPML is an exciting tool for anyone managing identity and access across different systems so please register now for this training event. Can't make the live event? Register anyway to get the recorded version

Thinking About Using Exchange 2010 Built-In Archiving? Think Again.

Here is a very useful blog for when someone is thinking about Exchange 10 built-in archiving. It's written by Microsoftie Harold Wong since May 2005. He answers questions from users after his TechNet Webcast: 'Exchange 2010 Archiving and Retention'. A few questions and answers are revealing if you think about 2010's free archiving instead of a third party dedicated app like Sunbelt Exchange Archiver. I will indicate Harold's answers with HW and our answers with SB.

Question: Is the user's archived mailbox not available when in offline mode with a laptop if you are using cached mode?

HW Answer: When the user is offline (no direct access to Exchange 2010), they will not be able to access their Archive Mailbox.

SB Answer: SEA gives users the ability to read archived emails offline by putting full copies of stubbed emails into the user's OST file which is what is used when accessing emails in cached mode when offline.

Question: What are the changes in terms of single instance storage within Exchange 2010?

HW Answer: We no longer have single instance storage in Exchange Server 2010.

SB Answer: This is another reason to use SEA. When Exchange Server 2010 no longer does single instance, this means that the database can grow large very quickly and easily become unmanageable.

Question: will it prevent the user from deleting or just remove the auto-delete from policies?

HW Answer: The user will be able to access the Archive Mailbox in the same manner that they access their Primary Mailbox. This means they will be able to delete emails from the archive. You can use Legal Hold to prevent deletions as I stated in an earlier answer.

SB Answer: SEA provides secure storage which means that emails can't be deleted as long as they are under retention. SEA provides Legal Holds to keep emails from being deleted even after retention has expired. If you allow users to delete emails, what is keeping them from deleting incriminating emails before a Legal Hold is placed with Exchange Server 2010?
Question: Can you also put a Legal Hold on Public Folder emails?

HW Answer: No, the Legal Hold only applies to Mailboxes.

SB Answer: SEA can place a legal hold on anything that you can search for and that can include public folders.

Question: Is there any compression used in archived copy of emails?

Answer: No.

SB Answer: SEA compresses both the archive and the mailbox store itself by up to 80%. This allows for quicker Exchange performance, quicker backups, and less storage media needing to be purchased.

Question: What archiving capabilities are available in Outlook versions earlier than 2010 e.g. 2003.

HW Answer: To access the Archive Mailbox in Exchange 2010, you will need Outlook 2010 or you will need to use Outlook Web Access in Exchange 2010.

SB Answer: SEA works with all versions of Outlook from 2000 to 2007 currently. It also works with Entourage for Mac which is something that has not even been mentioned with Exchange 2010 archiving.

Here is Harold Wong's blog post where he answers all the questions:

Microsoft: Killing IE6 'Not An Option'

Microsoft responded to critics who have called for the death of Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), saying "dropping support is not an option" for the eight-year-old browser. While acknowledging that Microsoft is eager for users to upgrade to a new version of IE, Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of the browser group, said the decision is out of its hands. "The choice to upgrade software on a PC belongs to the person responsible for the PC," said Hachamovitch. More at InfoWorld:

Network Considerations In Cloud Computing

For many cloud applications, network performance will be the key to cloud computing performance. The implications are best understood by considering a kind of issue matrix: public and private cloud applications in one dimension and cloud access versus intra-cloud networking in the other. This expert tip offers insight into networking considerations in each of these dimensions: (Registration Required)

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Release 2 CTP Ready to Ship

Microsoft is releasing the community technology preview for SQL Server 2008 R2. The latest version of the flagship database comes with enhancements around SQL Server's management and reporting capabilities.

The new version of the flagship database - which MSDN and TechNet subscribers got their hands on last Monday - has been enhanced with features around business intelligence and application and multiserver management.

"This CTP provides the first opportunity to explore some of the features of SQL Server 2008 R2 and see how it all comes together to enhance performance and scalability, enable self-service BI and improve IT and developer efficiency," according to the Data Platform Insider blog. "The CTP process is also a great way for (users) to give us feedback on the new technologies." More at eWEEK:

W2K8 R2 Gotcha: Forced Upgrade To Exchange 2010

Did you know that all the new features in Windows Server 2008 R2 come come with some caveats? One such gotcha is the end of support for Exchange 2007. That means if you move to R2, you will have to upgrade to you Exchange Server to 2010 as well.

Some new features in R2 that could make this forced upgrade worthwhile though, are for instance Group Policy. R2 has a bunch of PowerShell cmdlets that you can use via the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC). You will be able to automate many of the same tasks that you usually perform in the GUI.

Microsoft also fixed some long term scalability problems in Distributed File System, including issues with file replication. R2's Remote Desktop Services also have new features, such as the Fair Share CPU Scheduling and PowerShell management. And don't forget the really nice Client-side rendering in R2's RDS.

How to Evaluate, Compare and Implement Enterprise Antivirus

Mary Brandel wrote an excellent article for the CSO website (CSO stands for Chief Security Officer) Its title is: "How to Evaluate, Compare and Implement Enterprise Antivirus". Here some of the section titles of this 6-page article, which is a warmly recommended read, Here are a few of the points she touches on - "Enterprise Antivirus DO's and DON'Ts":
  • DON'T accept poor performance.
  • DO research other emerging client security tools.
  • DO value ease-of-use.
  • DO have a zero-day attack strategy.
  • DON'T forget malware removal capability.
  • DO consider costs carefully.
This is a valuable overview and a great tool to use when you have to make the choice to either renew, or switch to a next generation antivirus + antispyware product.
