Personal Spy Gear: Is It Ethical? Is It Legal?

ComputerWorld has a great story about this. These days, if you want to watch over your house, your kids or your significant other, there's a whole world of high-tech security devices out there you can use, in forms you may not have even imagined.

There are tiny GPS data loggers you can slip into someone's car or backpack to learn where they're going. There are audio recorders the size of flash drives that can listen in and preserve the conversations of others nearby. And there are surveillance cams in a whole assortment of motion-activated disguises, including facial tissue dispensers, alarm clocks, outdoor home electrical boxes, bird feeders and even soft, furry teddy bears.

But while it's easy to find and buy surveillance devices, is it legal and/or ethical to use them? Is it okay if you use them to watch over strangers? Is it reasonable to use them to watch and hear family members and loved ones? The answers can sometimes be murky:

Now's The Time To Get Serious About Exchange 2010

Both the Release Candidate (RC) for Exchange 2010 and the Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Exchange 2007 were just released, and if you're at all considering migrating to Exchange 2010, get both of them now. Exchange 2007 SP2 lets you install the release candidate for Exchange 2010 within the same environment as Exchange 2007, so you can have the two versions of Exchange coexist for better testing and transitioning.

And the Exchange 2010 RC allows an in-place upgrade to the forthcoming RTM version, so you can use this co-existence strategy to smooth your eventual migration to Exchange 2010. In fact, that's the best way to migrate, as you cannot perform an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010; instead, you have to move your mailboxes and such over. InfoWorld has a good article about this with the new features in Exchange 2010:

Much Frustration With Symantec, McAfee, and CA Etrust Corporate

Please take a minute to read this letter we received:

"After much frustration with Symantec, McAfee, and CA Etrust corporate antivirus versions over a 6 year period, I did a bit of research on antivirus packages that were out there to possibly make a change. The previous products were in my opinion, inferior bloatware. They missed viruses, slowed down the systems to a noticeable crawl at times, and had terrible customer service on the tech support end. I came across VIPRE while it was in the Beta stage of development but was intrigued by the fact that it was being developed from the ground up using a new detection process. I signed up to be a beta tester and was accepted. I ran their software in a test environment using the admin console and 5 or 6 client machines. The installation went flawlessly as did the deployment of the client over the network (all done through the admin console). It was a piece of cake. Over a 3 week period, I drove it hard. Now mind you, this was still beta so a few bugs cropped up but their developers were on them right away and actually fixed the problems, not masked them. Right then I was impressed with the level of support and detail that was being devoted to this product. The communication from their beta team was superb to say the least. The forums were very up to date.

"Now the detection capabilities. I intentionally injected viruses and went to sites that I knew would level most machines. VIPRE, even in its beta stage, did a tremendous job detecting and cleaning most threats. It wasn't perfect, but I give it a 98% at the time. The ease of administration from the console was a very pleasant surprise. Simple, yet extremely effective functionality was the key for me. I honestly don't have time to fret over antivirus/antispyware administration as I have too many other more important things to deal with. The software was easy to just "set it up and go". It just works.

"I purchased the corporate release when it became available. There was no question in my mind that I was making the right decision. The final release was as I had expected, very well done. I purchased it in Nov. 2008. So far, it has been an extremely reliable product. I had one instance where a 0-day threat hit one of my machines and VIPRE didn't even see it. That's when my experience with their Tech team came into the light. They were quick, responsive, professional, and most of all, VERY bright. Their attention to detail was excellent and I felt their commitment to their product, as well as me as a customer. That evening, they issued a signature that took care of the threat. In the mean time, they supplied me with a scanner that removed the threat anyway.

"I believe this product is one of the best out there. I have nothing to gain by saying that, it's just the truth. The price in my opinion is excellent for the product and level of prompt support I have received. The automatic updates are constant throughout the day so I feel my network is well protected, and the reporting feature is also great because as soon as something hits, I receive a detailed report by email about the machine, threat, and files involved so I can get right on it if there's trouble. (99.9% of the time there isn't). Like I said previously, the product just plain works. I am extremely satisfied and I'm sure you will be too. I hope this helps you." Kind Regards,
R.M

VIPRE vs McAfee

"Stu, long time lurker on your nt-admin et al lists. Just got my first client up and running with VIPRE enterprise product. Easy uninstall of expired McAfee product. Easy setup and most of all just enough capability, not overwhelming. Didn't find anything I wish it had, other than a little more awareness of exchange so I didn't have to manually do all of the exclusions when installed on exchange. A week into it, clients are running strong, I've tweaked the policies to remove or quarantine all the bad things, and we're off and running.

"Great job on the product. Great job on the $10 seat promo. Sole reason I chose it was the $10 promo pricing. Christina was easy to work with and got back to me promptly with pricing. I'm looking forward to using VIPRE as my go-to product for future A/V and anti-spyware needs. Thanks Again" -- N.W. Get a 30-day VIPRE Enterprise eval here:
