Security Spending On The Rise

Spending on security will outpace other IT requirements and projects by next year. According to a new survey by Gartner, security software budgets are expected to grow by approximately four per cent in 2010; with security services budgets projected to grow by almost three per cent, significantly out performing other service areas.

AMD's DX11 Radeons Can Drive Six 30" Displays

An Admin's Dream! This item was on Slashdot. J. Dzhugashvili writes "Whereas most current graphics cards can only drive a pair of displays, AMD has put some special sauce in its next-generation DirectX 11 GPUs to enable support for a whopping six monitors. There's no catch about supported resolutions, either. At an event yesterday, AMD demonstrated a single next-gen Radeon driving six 30" Dell monitors, each with a resolution of 2560x1600, hooked up via DisplayPort. Total resolution: 7680x3200 (or 24.6 megapixels). AMD's drivers present this setup as a single monitor to Windows, so in theory, games don't need to be updated to support it. AMD showed off Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, World of Warcraft, and DiRT 2 running at playable frame rates on the six displays." Here is the item this story refers to:

Rethinking Server 2008 R2 Capacity Planning

With the recent release of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, it is incumbent upon any IT manager to consider future capacity planning given that an eventual upgrade to the new OS is inevitable. The server's 64-bit capability will call for new hardware. Read this expert tip and learn key considerations and best practices for capacity planning with Windows Server R2.

These new Microsoft operating system platforms are based on a different code tree than their predecessors, and this will impact the hardware they run on. Table 1 shows the basic hardware requirements for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. While these requirements are very similar, the most important difference is that 2008 R2 is limited to x64 and Itanium platforms - and that will require some planning on your part. Microsoft has said it will not produce any more x86 (32-bit) server products. Exchange 2007 and later products will only run on x64 platforms, so this is just another move in the 64-bit direction. Because of this new 64-bit requirement, IT managers working with Windows Server 2008 R2 need a hardware planning strategy.

Table 1: Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 hardware requirements

Windows Server 2008 R2 Component Requirement
Processor X64 1.4 GHz
IA64 Itanium 2
Memory 512 MB
Maximum:
8 GB foundation
32 GB Std
Enterprise, Data Center, Itanium
Disk Space 32 GB+
10 GB
More if >16 GB RAM

Windows Server 2008 Component Requirement
Processor X86 - 1 GHz
X64 - 1.4 GHz
IA64 - Itanium 2
Memory Min: 512 MB RAM
Max:
X86: 4 GB Std
64 GB (Enterprise, Data Center)
X64: 8 GB (Foundation)
32 GB (Standard)
2 TB (Enterprise, Data Center, Itanium)
Disk Space Min:
(x86) 20 GB
(x64) 32 GB
Foundation: 10 GB
More for page file if >16 GB RAM

How To Make Hyper-V Licensing Work For You

The benefits of server virtualization are clear. Less rack space, less power, less cooling and fewer peripherals require more efficient data centers. Microsoft has made licensing attractive, especially for users virtualizing a fair number of virtual machines on a particular host. Here are some real-world examples of how to get cost savings, which can help you gain management approval for virtualizing servers with Hyper-V.

VIPRE Enterprise Hotfix 6 Released

Sunbelt Software is pleased to announce the production release of Hotfix 6 on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 10:00am. Hotfix 6 is a general update that improves the overall performance and stability of VIPRE.

With a number of fixes "under the hood" and other general improvements to increase performance and stability (listed at the end of this announcement), there are several key improvements in Hotfix 6:
  • Improve the description of Active Protection settings, and change the screen layout to help prevent users from quarantining OS files and other key files.
  • Update VIPRE to work with the new Windows Security Center in Vista and Windows 7
  • Update VIPRE to be fully compatible with Windows 7 RTM
  • Prepare for new smaller definitions files
Hotfix 6 will automatically download and prompt you for installation. We recommend installing this as soon as possible. If you encounter any issues, please contact Tech Support. Please note that only VIPRE has been released on 11 September. CounterSpy will release on Monday, 14 September.

List of improvements in Hotfix 6
  • Rootkit detections updated for full compatibility in Windows 7
  • Boot-time cleaner updated for full compatibility in 64-bit Operating Systems
  • Code change to improve the definitions download and update process
  • Improved scanning capabilities in 64-bit Operating Systems
  • Code change to Boot Time Scanner to accommodate smaller definitions files.
  • Fixed inconsistent cleaning behavior in AP between XP, Vista, and W2k
  • Fixed a bug when enabling AP with a hotbar installed
  • Add new help context to AP popup
  • Add a checkbox to "Enable low-risk detections" in AP. Checking this box will quarantine/delete low-risk threats. Not checking this box will ignore low-risk threats.
  • Update to the back-end systems to support the new definitions files
  • Implement several MBR rootkit detection improvements-more rootkit infector types detected & cleaned
  • Add logic to use Root Kit engine to scan ALL files (not just hidden ones)
  • Improved the rootkit scanning of system modules
  • Fixed a bug in the Getting Started Wizard
  • Fixed a bug where an Ampersand causes software conflict details to not be written to System Messages log
  • Fixed a bug in Thunderbird-retrieving messages with large attachments failed and caused high CPU usage
  • Fixed a runtime error when a scan catches a LARGE directory of malware
  • Modify the quarantine logic for file infectors to quarantine files that could not be cleaned UNLESS they are in the Windows folder/sub-folders.
  • Fixed a bug where the wrong time was being stamped to quarantined files
  • Update VIPRE to work with the new Windows Security Center in Vista and Windows 7
  • Prepare VIPRE consumer & agent for W7 logo certification
  • Prepare CounterSpy consumer & agent for W7 logo certification
  • Update User and Quick Start Guides.
  • Fixed a bug where if there are too many quarantine threads, computer becomes unusable with certain Internet Explorer toolbars
  • Fix bug where scan will start while updates are occurring. Updates complete first, then the scan will start
  • Help window can now go "behind" VIPRE/CounterSpy
  • Have manual scans check for definitions updates prior to the scan, same as a scheduled scan
