Heads-Up: Windows 2000 Server Support Going Away

Redmond alerted customers yesterday that it will retire W2K from support next summer. Also, at that time, they will shift the newer Server 2003 to what they call limited support. This 10-month heads-up -- W2K going away -- is not very usual for Microsoft. Normally they remind us much closer to the deadline. You will be able to continue using "Self-Help Online Support", such as Knowledge Base documents and user-to-user forums. Here is the MS Blog with the announcement:

Funny Quotes Of The Week, both by Jay Leno

"Here's something to think about: How come you never see a headline like 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?"

"For the first time ever, overweight people outnumber average people in America. Doesn't that make overweight the average then? Last month you were fat, now you're average - hey, let's get a pizza!"

Do You Need Third-Party Printing Solutions For VDI?

If death and taxes are the only two immutable truths in life, then challenges with licensing and printing would be the two truths of desktop virtualization. In this tip industry expert, Brian Madden discusses why the complexity of virtual desktop infrastructures poses problems for printing and how new products from the "Big 3" vendors, as well as smaller companies, can make printing easier: (Registration Required)

New Phishing Attack Chats Up Victims

With many who bank online now wary of phishing attacks, criminals are adding fake live-chat support windows to their Web sites to make them seem more real. This is a new wrinkle that makes things even more tricky:

Eight Is Too Many Characters For Strong Passwords

Win7 Beta Exams Now Available

Microsoft is already in the midst of testing two more new Windows 7 exams, both at the Pro level. Click on the links below for exam objectives.

You can register and take 71-685 now; registration for 71-686 is open, but testing doesn't start until Sep. 21. Both betas end Oct. 16.

Both exams are Win7 versions of the Vista-based Enterprise Windows exams, so if you're familiar with Vista from an enterprise support or enterprise admin POV, you would probably do well with these ones. It can't hurt to take them: Microsoft beta exams are free and if you pass these exams in beta will have it reflected on transcripts once the exams go into worldwide distribution.

Virtualization Skills Pay The Bills

Even in a depressed job market, IT professionals with virtualization skills have it pretty good. Over the past year, IT job postings on the online IT job board Dice.com are down a full 42%. But the number of postings requesting virtualization and VMware skills remained remarkably flat during this period. In fact, virtualization skills are among the most sought-after technology skills on Dice.com, second only to security:

BOOK: WinServer 2008 R2 Virtualization

I was sent a book by publisher McGraw Hill for review. The official title is a mouthful: "Microsoft Virtualization with Hyper-V: Manage Your Datacenter with Hyper-V, Virtual PC, Virtual Server, and Application Virtualization". It's main feature is that it shows you how to implement a Hyper-V virtualization solution, and is very clear in that.

The books short title is "Microsoft Virtualization with Hyper-V" and shows you how to deploy Microsoft's next-generation hypervisor-based server virtualization technology in a corporate environment. You'll get step-by-step guidelines for getting Hyper-V up and running, followed by best practices for building a larger, fault-tolerant solution using System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008. This hands-on guide explains how to migrate physical systems to the virtual environment; use System Center Operations Manager; and secure, back up, and restore Hyper-V solutions. Here are some of the main topics:
  • Plan and implement a Hyper-V installation
  • Configure Hyper-V components
  • Install and configure System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008
  • Create and manage virtual machines
  • Back up and restore virtual machines
  • Monitor, back up, and restore the virtual solution
  • Secure your Hyper-V environment
  • Understand the virtual desktop infrastructure
  • Use third-party virtualization tools for Hyper-V
