Finally: My Personal Windows Supercomputer

Remember SGI of supercomputer graphics fame? They reorganized and this week they released their first personal supercomputer. It's essentially a one-by-two foot high-performance cluster sitting next to your desk and this monster supports distributed technical computing applications on both Microsoft HPC Server 2008 and some Unix flavors. They say it's whisper-quiet, easy-to-use, low maintenance and yes... takes standard power outlets. Wow.

The entry level workstation has just eight cores and a 'moderate' amount of RAM. But you can stuff a whopping 80 cores and nearly 1TB of memory into the Octane Model III, and remember this sits next to your desk. OK, I admit I'm drooling.

Obviously they mean to sell this puppy for things like CAD, fluid dynamics, seismic processing, data analytics, and the like. Octane III can be configured with the latest Intel single- and dual-socket nodes. For example you could equip this baby with 10 dual-socket quad-Xeon 5500 nodes; one dual-socket quad-Xeon 5500 with advanced Nvidia graphics and/or GP-GPU card support. Or, if you felt like it, 19 single-socket quad- Xeon 3400 nodes; or just for the heck of it, 19 single-socket dual-core Atom-based nodes. Darn. It's immediately available in Xeon 5500 and Atom configurations.

Pricing starts at $7,995. Mom! Can I get one???

IE8 Runs 10 Times Faster With Google Plug-In

Internet Explorer zips through JavaScript nearly 10 times faster than usual when Google's new Chrome Frame plug-in is partnered with the browser, benchmark tests show. According to tests run by ComputerWorld, IE8 with the plug-in was 9.6 times faster than IE8 on its own.

Microsoft is 'Very Unhappy'. A spokes person said: "Given the security issues with plug-ins in general and Google Chrome in particular, Google Chrome Frame running as a plug-in has doubled the attack area for malware and malicious scripts. This is not a risk we would recommend our friends and families take."

Redmond probably thinks this is a Trojan Horse to get customers into Google Wave, due out next week, that merges e-mail, instant messaging, Wiki and social networking but chokes on IE.

Chrome Frame and works with IE6, 7 and 8 on Vista and XP SP2, but it's really supposedly targeted at the eight-year-old IE6 that is still required by many companies. If I were a system admin, I'd probably block that plug-in, just to make sure the Help Desk does not go crazy. More at ComputerWorld:

7 Ways Security Pros DON'T Practice What They Preach

Tip: The Role Of NAP In Your Security Infrastructure

Computer security has always been about updates and restrictions. Updates ensure that computers have the proper patches and software versions to protect against malicious code, while restrictions, whether via network or systems controls, ensure that only pre-approved behaviors are allowed to occur within a computing environment. But a third component has been missing from security infrastructures: enforcement. Learn how Microsoft's Network Access Protection can verify whether a business is protected: (Registration Required)

Hardware Considerations For Windows Server Virtualization

When implementing virtualization, there are certain hardware components that servers must have for your project to work. In this expert tip, learn what steps you can take to make sure your hardware is ready before you tackle: (Registration Required)

What's The Difference Between High Availability And Fault Tolerance?

I was just sent a "Windows Tips & Tricks Update written by John Savill that I thought you'd like. There is much more in that newsletter but this bit was quite interesting.

A. "High availability is commonly thought of as a way to ensure a resource stays available, but the resource may suffer from some minor downtime. For example, with Hyper-V you have high availability because in the event that a host fails, the guest OSs just stop-there's no time to migrate the active state to another host, so you have some downtime. This is the same with VMware HA. vMotion can't be used because the host just stops and there's no live memory to move. You therefore typically lose the in-memory application state with high availability.

Fault tolerance mean you don't lose the in-memory application state in the event of a failure such as a host crash. Fault Tolerance is much harder than high availability in a virtual environment because you have to maintain two copies of a virtual machine, each on separate hosts. As memory and device state change on the primary, these changes have to be recorded and replayed on the secondary copy at the same time.

Currently, only VMware vSphere has fault tolerance capabilities, but only a single logical processor on the VM is supported. Fault tolerance also has very high network requirements, but it provides the capability for a fault tolerant solution that results in no downtime, even if a host fails.

You can find the full Update version here:

Giving Praise Where And When Praise Is Due

"I believe in giving praise where and when praise is due. That offsets my tendency to nag until someone delivers as promised! That said, I am having trouble finding words which will convey my utter pleasure with VIPRE Enterprise. This is one excellent product. After rolling it out on my network (and that process was surprisingly simple and effective), I was amazed at the amount of garbage that was out there that Trend Micro did not find. Flabbergasted would be a better description. Wishing I had switched a loooooong time ago. Good work, Sunbelt!" -- J.B., Dir. Information Services
