Lenovo Vows 'Unbelievably' Fast Windows 7 Boots

Computerworld - Lenovo Group Ltd. is staking an early claim to potentially key turf in the Windows 7 gold rush: The PC vendor boasts it has the fastest boot-up and shutdown times. ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktop PCs for businesses will boot Windows 7 up to 56% faster than when loading XP or Vista, Lenovo said. Meanwhile, IdeaPad and IdeaCentre consumer PCs certified for "Windows 7 Lenovo Enhanced Experience" will load 33% faster and shut down 50% faster than hardware that's noncertified but otherwise identical. Howard Locker, director of new technology at the Chinese PC maker, told Computerworld that in some cases, "we went from a one-minute boot-up to 30 seconds, and took shutdown from 20 seconds down to 10." By now you know that the Windows Server 2008 R2, latest version of Windows Server, has hit the streets for a lot of folks and will be available to all in just a few weeks. Some of the big features like Microsoft Hyper-V have received a lot of attention, but there are several other new features surfacing with this release. Test Center Review: Microsoft's Hyper-V R2 Is Hot On VMware's Heels

The much-improved Hyper-V R2 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 combo smooths the bumps to Windows server virtualization, but VMware maintains the lead.

Microsoft is poised to improve its standing in the world of virtualization with the much-anticipated update to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Redmond's hypervisor-based server virtualization solution for 64-bit Intel- and AMD-based servers. First released last year, Hyper-V proved a less-than-compelling offering compared to virtualization platforms from VMware, Virtual Iron (now Oracle), Citrix, and other rivals. Hyper-V Release 2, part of Windows Server 2008 R2, delivers some exciting new features that change the game.

Among Hyper-V R2's new features is support for 64 logical processors; Live Migration support, which allows admins to move a VM from one physical server to another without service interruption; VM Chimney, which provides TCP offload support; and a new processor compatibility mode for Live Migration, which enables migrations between different CPUs in the same family. More at InfoWorld:

VMware vs. Hyper-V Cost Debate Rages On

The release of Hyper-V R2 with live migration makes it easier to make apples-to-apples comparisons between Microsoft's virtualization platform and VMware's more mature offerings. But which is cheaper? The answer is still up in the air - and highly dependent on an IT organization's individual needs and circumstances: (Registration Required)

VMware, Hyper-V Leave Competitors In The Dust

A recent TechTarget survey of 666 IT professionals that have deployed or are evaluating virtualization has revealed some interesting developments in the industry from just a few years ago. After being up for grabs for some time, the virtualization market has settled on VMware and Microsoft bare-metal platforms, relegating other contenders to afterthought status. Can we expect one of these market leaders to come out on top in the coming year? Check out this article for more survey findings and insight into what to expect from the virtualization industry in 2010: (Registration Required)

Sunbelt Exchange Archiver v.4.0 Released

Here are the Release Notes:

New features:
  • .NET Framework 2.0 support.
  • 64-bit systems support.
  • New Archive Web 2.0 brings a lot of new features:
    • Common user interface for SFA and SEA.
    • Common Search (over Exchange, File and SharePoint archive) - administrators and regulators can now do a common search over archived email, File Server and SharePoint files.
    • Document tagging and commenting. Document tagging allows the user to mark a document (e-mail) with a tag - for categorization or for visual enhancement only. A tagged document can be searched by the tag, the tag is displayed in the preview of the email and it is possible to display all documents marked by a given tag. Document commenting allows the user to add comments to documents while preserving the history of comments. The comments set on a document are shared among users and the comments are accessible to anyone who has permissions to access the document.
    • eDiscovery, Search and Litigation hold redesigned and improved.
    • Statistics (archived, retrieved) - Detailed reports can be created based on archive and retrieval for both email and files.
    • Folder organization - End users can organize/customize the archive web. Folders can be created and moved if permission is granted by the administrator.
    • Inline preview of MS Office files (only IE), PDF files and pictures in the browser.
  • Enterprise Manager:
    • Initial wizard. The older startup configuration page was replaced by the wizard. This wizard performs the initial configuration (create a manual group and import users to this group or import an existing group, set the addin and fulltext rights for the newly created group, create a new job and set the default retention category) of SEA, so the user can archive after the wizard finishes.
    • Statistics window - administrators can now run reports on the mailbox size of each end user as well as the number of messages and size in the archive. Date ranges can be specified and grouped - the results are presented in bar charts or line graphs and can be exported and saved in various standard formats.
    • Options pages redesigned.
    • Post processing configuration redesigned. It is possible to configure the post-processing service in Enterprise Manager.
  • PST export:
    • PST segmenting. You can define the maximum size of the PST file and the export automatically creates multiple PST files.
    • Online monitoring of PST file size (export tasks).
  • User synchronization:
    • Query-based groups can be synchronized.
    • SID is the unique mailbox identifier. Sunbelt Exchange Archiver v.4.0 Release Notes 2 [email protected]
Copyrightę 2009 Sunbelt Software, Inc. All rights reserved. [email protected]
  • New HSM plug-in in the SEAConfiguration tool. The new plug-in contains all administration functionality of the PamHsmAsyncConf.exe, PamMediaStoreAdministration.exe tools and can directly launch HSMTester.exe.
  • New search engine technology. Supported Full-text search implementations are MS Search (indexing via custom content sources) and Sunbelt search (indexing via post processing). There is already a post processing plug-in available for full-text indexing of documents with Sunbelt search.
  • Performance counters.
  • Alerter service redesigned.
  • Storing MESSAGE_TO, SENTDATE parameters in the database.
  • The new forms are passing the Outlook version to the server, which is able to convert the UNICODE MSG files to ANSI files on the fly allowing new msg files on Outlook 2000 and XP to be seen.
  • New location of shared applications (SEAConfig, HSM, ArchiveWeb, Sunbelt Search): CommonFiles folder.
  • Multithreading support for PostProcessing. This will speed up the post-processing of archived documents.
List of fixes:
  • Bugfix: some named properties were searched under incorrect property set guid.
  • Bugfix: if the attachment extension is not defined (MAPI property) and the attachment name does not contain an extension, the application throws an unhandled exception.
  • Bugfix: if the clipboard contained no data or the format of the data was not right, pasting the clipboard to the textboxes resulted in an unhandled exception.
  • Bugfix: OWA installer automatically sets the correct framework version.
  • Bugfix: the manager service is not able to detect new HSM schemes and stores. The list of schemes is reloaded every hour.
  • Bugfix: the keepalive time is added to the deleted date or to expiry date (whichever is bigger).
  • Bugfix: on case sensitive SQL server the DA feature is not working - not possible to add the message to the pool.
  • Bugfix: if the attachment display name contains HTML control characters, it is not possible to access the attachment directly.
  • Bugfix: SEA.UI: resizing problems after minimize/maximize.

VIPRE Enterprise Love

We were sent this email a few days ago: "Thanks!! By the way, we have contacted your support a couple times getting things up and running. I've said this before but I want to make sure you know, I am very impressed with what I have seen. The system just works. I have tested it extensively on a test system and it seems to catch everything (in contrast, I've never had my install of Symantec Endpoint catch a single piece of spyware). Your support is top notch, the software is solid, the layout and policy management is superior. I think you guys have done an excellent job! Congratulations and my highest complements to your design and programming team! Also, feel free to use me as a reference any time you need to.
