Windows 7 Survey: Apple Will Miss Vista
Welcome to issue 750 (w00t!) and 14 years of Windows Server News. This issue
coincides with the release of Win7 so we have a bunch of interesting stuff
about that. To start off, the results of the Win7 survey many of you took:
By Laura DiDio - Thanks to everyone who responded to the joint ITIC/Sunbelt
Software survey on Windows 7. The response was overwhelming: 1,650 of you
from 29 countries took time out of your busy schedules to respond to our
poll. Thank You so much! A shout out to first time respondents from such
exotic locales as: the Cocos/Keeling Islands, Estonia, Island State of Niue,
Polynesia, Malta and Namibia! But we also appreciate the many responses
and insightful comments from Asia, Australia, Canada, Eastern and Western
Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand, South America and of course, the U.S.A.
To show our gratitude for the great response, Stu and I decided to increase
the number of prizes. Instead of two (2) iPods and two (2) copies of VIPRE,
we'll be awarding three (3) iPods and five (5) copies of the VIPRE home site
license.
As always you were frank and forthcoming in voicing praise, criticism and
concern on Windows 7 compatibility, performance and packaging as well as on
Microsoft's pricing and licensing policies.
From a compatibility and performance standpoint, you told us that Windows 7
is a winner. An overwhelming 80% majority of you rated Windows 7 performance
and applications compatibility with legacy applications "Excellent" or "Very
Good." Nearly two-thirds or 60% of you indicated you will deploy Windows 7;
30% of you say you'll migrate to the new Microsoft desktop operating system
within the first six months while another 30% say intend to make the transition
sometime within the year. Four out of 10 businesses - 40% -- have no
definitive migration timetable.
Among the other Survey Highlights:
- Approximately 11% of companies said they plan to wait until the first
Service Pack ships before migrating.
- Of the 40% of respondents who had no definitive migration timetable,
25% cited satisfaction with their current Windows XP and Windows Vista desktops.
- Some 12% of respondents rated Windows 7 "Good", 8% said "Satisfactory."
- Only 2% of the survey base called Windows 7 a "Poor" or "Completely
Unsatisfactory"
- Less than 2% of those polled said they were considering switching from
Windows to another desktop OS.
Among the 40% of respondents said they have "no definitive timetable" to
migrate, the chief reasons were:
- Current Windows XP and Windows Vista deployments work fine (26%)
- No compelling business reason (22)%
- The desire to wait to "ensure application compatibility." (19%)
- Will wait to upgrade desktop hardware (18%)
These are all valid reasons for maintaining the status quo. Additionally,
capital expenditure budgets are still tight. At present many companies lack
the necessary funds to invest in a new operating system upgrade. This fact
was noted by many of you, who said that for the time being, your firms
would make do with their current infrastructure. Some also cited the need
to replace older, outmoded desktop hardware before moving to Windows 7.
Many of the users in this category said, their firms planned to migrate
to Windows 7 as they purchased new desktops, e.g. on an as-needed basis.
This is the case for many smaller firms and government organizations who
are still feeling the pinch of the economic downturn.
Overall, though the mood based on the survey comments, is generally positive.
Users expressed their approbation and relief that Windows 7 is everything
they expected. Many of you said you thought this was the best Microsoft
desktop OS yet and said Microsoft has slain the compatibility dragons that
plagued Vista. The beta testers and early adopters reported that the
migration was smooth regardless of whether you were doing a clean install
or an upgrade in place. A very few of you reported some incompatibilities
with niche market 64-bit drivers and some of you said that the move to
Windows 7 would have to wait until a specific vertical market application
becomes available.
Many of you also voiced some healthy criticisms and expressed understandable
concerns about wanting to wait and see how the early adopters fared. The
biggest issues identified in the comment section and in first person
customer interviews were:
- The upgrade price for the commercial/business editions: many of you who
just completed a migration to Vista believe Microsoft should give you a
deep discount to move to Windows 7.
- The fact that BitLocker security encryption is included in the Ultimate
Edition but not the Professional Edition
- Worries about XP mode and in general worries about overall compatibility
- including compatibility with older hardware

if you'd like a complimentary copy of the Report or with any comments.
We value your opinions. Due to the overwhelming response to the Windows 7
survey, we decided to give away three (3) iPods and five (5) copies of
Sunbelt Software's VIPRE. And we're giving away two (2) iPods for the
High Availability/Fault Tolerant survey. The winners are:
High Availability/Fault Tolerant survey:
iPod - Michael Klein
iPod - Randy Hutton
Windows 7 Survey:
iPod - Ian Melton
iPod - Steven Sommer
iPod - Weston Morris
VIPRE - Kerry Schrantz
VIPRE - C Holmes
VIPRE - Dave
VIPRE - H. Raza
VIPRE - Reach
Congratulations to all of the winners. We'll contact all of you by mail and
you should be receiving your prizes within the next few days! To keep things
in perspective and Redmond on its toes, here is the new cheeky Apple ad

Windows 7 On Multicore: How Much Faster?
Microsoft has been touting its superior handling of threads in Windows 7.
InfoWorld's tests show that speed isn't the only benefit, or necessarily
the main one.
Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system is receiving raves in its pre-release
testing. While much of the kernel that lies at the heart of the operating
system is based on Vista code, several key advances have been made that
get rid of Vista annoyances and greatly improve the user experience.
Inside the kernel, one important change centers on how multi-threaded
applications are run. The threading advances provide benefits in energy
reduction, scalability, and, in theory, performance:

Microsoft: XP Is Far More Vulnerable than Vista, Windows 7
Blogger Preston Gralla at ComputerWorld reported that Microsoft has released
data from one week of people using Microsoft Security Essentials anti-malware,
and the results are clear: XP machines are far more vulnerable than Vista
PCs, and Vista PCs are more vulnerable than those with Windows 7. And
Brazil, for unknown reasons, is a hotbed for worms. More:

But Here Are 10 Reasons to Stick with Windows XP for Now
Not wanting to be a 'mindless' Win7 Cheerleader, here are the top 10 reasons
to stick with XP for now. Now that Windows 7 has finally been released, IT
managers will be fielding questions from users and business managers about
whether it's time to upgrade to the new desktop operating system. But that
doesn't necessarily mean that a prompt upgrade to Windows 7 is the right
call, especially when Windows XP is still working fine. Here they are:

Fixed vs. Dynamic Virtual Hard Disks
Designating the number of CPUs and the amount of RAM for your virtual machines
(VMs) is pretty straightforward. But when it comes to configuring a hard
drive, things get trickier. Whenever provisioning new VMs in a Hyper-V
environment, selecting the right disk type is a key decision. This tip
provides an overview of the differences between fixed and dynamic virtual
hard disks and key considerations for selecting the right option for your
organization:

Major Update To Hyper-V R2, Closes Feature Gap With VMware
A new release of Microsoft's virtualization software adds important
capabilities, but analysts say still lacks some basic functions required
to run enterprise-class apps.
Competition between VMware and Microsoft got a little tighter on Thursday
with the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, which includes a major update
to Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization software. VMware dominates the
server virtualization market, but Microsoft hopes to change that with
its new offering, Hyper-V R2. The update adds important capabilities
that help Microsoft close the functionality gap with VMware and other
rivals. But analysts still see the product falling short in a few areas
required for running enterprise-class applications. More at InfoWorld:
http://www.wservernews.com/091026-Hyper-V-R2-Update
Server Virtualization Now 18% Of Server Workload
Gartner says virtualization of server workload will grow to 28 percent next
year and reach almost half by 2012.
How fast is the shift to server virtualization happening? According to
Gartner, 18 percent of server workloads this year run on virtualized
servers; that share will grow to 28 percent next year and reach almost
half by 2012. Large enterprises have driven server virtualization over
the last four years or so, and VMware holds an 89 percent market share
against a handful of competitors that include Microsoft, Citrix, Red
Hat, and others. There are about 5.8 million virtual machines (VM)
believed to be in use today, said Gartner analyst Thomas Bittman,
speaking on the topic Monday at Gartner's Symposium ITExpo 2009 attended
by thousands of high-tech managers from around the world. More at
InfoWorld:

Building VM Templates In Hyper-V
Virtualization makes provisioning new servers a breeze. With the ability
to turn server requests into a functioning workload in a relatively short
time, server OS base installations from media are much faster. But the
quickest and most efficient way to provision new virtual machines (VMs)
is to create templates for different operating system types and workloads.
Learn how to build these templates in this expert tip:

Virtual-To-Physical Conversions: Why And How
You might wonder why you would want to turn a virtual machine back into
a physical server. In most cases the reason for this is due to application
vendors not supporting their products when they are running on a virtual
machine. Almost all vendors now support virtualization, but there is usually
a caveat about that support which you'll see in their support statements.

A System Admin Describes His VIPRE Deployment
"Over the past 10 years we've used three anti-virus products to protect our
network resources: McAfee anti-virus, Panda anti-virus, and VIPRE Enterprise.
"As a small business with 30 employees, we were using McAfee anti-virus to
protect our workstations. As new threats emerged we started using spyware
products like Ad-Aware and Counterspy to supplement protection at the
workstation level. However, as many viruses would disable the anti-virus
scanner at the workstation, it became necessary to look at a product that
offered a centralized management console to provide notifications to an
administrator as events occurred.
"As the McAfee product (E-Policy Orchestrator) wasn't very robust in that
regard, we switched products to Panda which had a good central console
system. Unfortunately, we had nothing but trouble with that product that
ranged from install/uninstall issues to application conflicts, problems
with roaming profiles, and communication problems between the central
console and the workstations.
"Our Panda license ended as VIPRE was being introduced as a product. I did
a trial of both Counterspy Enterprise and the VIPRE beta. The Counterspy
Enterprise demo proved Sunbelt had developed a solid and robust central
console which impressed me greatly. At the time VIPRE was announced as
the first product to integrate anti-virus and anti-spyware protection
together into one engine. I not only tested it myself but checked out
opinions of other people who had tested the beta. The end result was the
Sunbelt had truly developed a superior product. So I bought it to protect
both our workstations and servers.
"For our business, VIPRE Enterprise has been everything we've needed. Since
we bought it, we have not had a single problem with it. As events arise at
workstations or servers, I receive an email notification. At a glance I
can use the central console to see whether updates are needed or run
reports based on findings. Key features for me are the ability to
include/exclude specific programs from getting flagged as virus/spyware
concerns, and being able to set up profiles for different groups (admin,
users, servers, etc.). Having one program to address both viruses and
spyware (malware) has helped greatly. I no longer have to supplement my
virus scans with a separate product to address spyware - which has not
only helped with workstation memory but allowed me to reduce overall
costs as I only need one product.
"I would highly recommend VIPRE Enterprise to any business that is looking
for an integrated malware solution. The clients are small, fast, easy to
deploy, and do an excellent job of detection and notification. Admin
overhead has been reduced as the product is dependable and I get
notifications of events as they happen. But, server/workstation protection
is only a piece of the puzzle. As a responsible IT administrator, I
also believe in protection at the gateway/firewall, and the email store.
We use McAfee at the firewall as it provides a second anti-virus product
protecting my network, and VIPRE Email Security (formerly Ninja Email
Security) to protect my Exchange e-mail server. With these protections
in place, very little makes it through.
"Lastly, I have never been a supporter of Symantec anti-virus. Years ago
when we were just dealing with anti-virus products, Symantec anti-virus
was known for its conflicts with other applications, and how difficult it
could be to install/uninstall. Sadly, to this day, I still hear and see
reports of application conflicts and other problems. For that reason,
we don't use and I don't recommend Symantec anti-virus." --
