Redmond Starts Selling PCs Online And In Malls

Clearly calculated to fire a barrage into Apple's flank, Microsoft this week started selling a variety of Dell and Sony Laptops and Netbooks, plus a lonely $999 Lenovo PC from their new Microsoft online store. The salvo, carefully planned to coincide with the Win7 launch, is bound to upset some existing retail partners and could cause some problems with online retailers. But that's not all. In the desert heat of Scottsdale, Arizona, the first Microsoft-branded retail store opened as an early shot across Apple's bow. Is Redmond coming soon to a Mall near you? There's one plus: they do not come with all kinds of crapware pre-installed. Here's the new online store:

Microsoft to Open Outlook .PST Format

PCMag and many others in the press reported that the Microsoft Office Interoperability announced this week that it would make the Outlook .PST file format - which stores email, calendar entries, and contacts - accessible to third-party developers. The move means that other software, both on the client and on servers, will be able to access and manipulate the data using any programming language. This means that Outlook itself will not need to be installed. The team intends to fully document how data is stored, how to access it, and the actual structure of the PST file. Note, that they only announced their intent, it's not quite ready yet.

My 2c? I would block apps that try to access a PST file either on the PC or on the server. Way too much chance for things to go blooey.

Win7 Upgrade Paralyzes Some PCs With Endless Reboots

ComputerWorld reported that some users trying to upgrade from Vista to Win7 have seen their PCs crippled by an endless series of reboots, according to reports on Microsoft's support forum. A Microsoft engineer writing on the same forum said the company was investigating users' problems, but he downplayed them as "isolated issues." Users began posting messages about the endless reboots Friday, saying that the Win7 installation would hang two-thirds of the way through the upgrade. They reported a message on their machines that claimed the upgrade had been unsuccessful and that Vista would be restored. Instead, their PCs again booted to the Win7 setup process, failed, then restarted the cycle. More at the Support forum:

The one they could not get in there on time is the new Double-Take Backup which is also very useful in a VM environment, so check out the Third Party News section for that.
