Rootkit With Blue Screen History Now Targets 64-Bit Windows

Computerworld reported that a new version of the malware that crippled Windows PCs last February sidesteps safeguards designed to block rootkits from hijacking machines running 64-bit editions of Windows.

"A new era has officially dawned: the era of x64 rootkits," said Prevx researcher Marco Giuliani in a post to the security vendor's blog yesterday. The updated rootkit, which goes by names that include Alureon, TDL, TLD3 and Tidserv, is able to infect 64-bit Windows PCs. "TLD3 can be considered as the first x64-compatible kernel mode rootkit infection in the wild," Giuliani said. Read more:

More Details About Exchange 2010 SP1

Paul Robichaux wrote: "Over the past year or two, Microsoft has become increasingly open with the details of service packs for Windows and server products alike. Exchange 2010 SP1 is no exception; many of its major features and changes have already been announced, demonstrated, or otherwise made public. For example, there have been posts on the Exchange team blog covering the new mailbox repair functionality, changes in the way throttling policies work, and changes in the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (ExBPA), and the public beta of SP1 showed pretty much everything that Microsoft planned to deliver in the final product. The rest of this recommended article is here:

Also, here is the bog post from the exchange team. But I would not put this on my Exchange Production Server for a few more weeks until it's really clear there are no gotchas: The Future of Exchange Starts Here: Exchange Server 2010 SP1 Is Now Available

Survey Shows: iPads Are About To Pour Into Your Business

Corporate IT, consider yourself warned: You'll be dealing with the iPad in your enterprise, whether or not you want to. And it won't just be the iPad; tablets and slates of all sorts are on their way in as well, as Android, WebOS, and Windows Compact Embedded 7 devices. A new survey shows business use is a major reason that employees are getting iPads -- it's not just for videos and surfing. Think 'Tablet Tsunami'. InfoWorld has the survey results:

Windows DLL Exploits Boom; Hackers Post Attacks For 40-Plus Apps

The story was all over the press this week, but Computerworld has the best write-up. "Some of the world's most popular Windows programs are vulnerable to attacks that exploit a major bug in the way they load critical code libraries, according to sites tracking attack code.

"Among the Windows applications that are vulnerable to exploits that many have dubbed "DLL load hijacking" are the Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera browsers; Microsoft's Word 2007; Adobe's Photoshop; Skype; and the uTorrent BitTorrent client.

"Fast and furious, incredibly fast," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle Security, referring to the pace of postings of exploits that target the vulnerability in Windows software. Called "DLL load hijacking" by some, the exploits are dubbed "binary planting" by others. More at:
