The Last Line Of Defense (TLLOD)

Familiar with the TLLOD startup? Probably not, they were new to me too. LastLine, Inc., provides protection technology that is complementary to existing anti-virus software and firewalls. They gather malware intelligence by analyzing millions of suspicious URLs and binaries each day, and pinpoint the exploit servers that are behind drive-by exploits campaigns and the command and control server that manage botnets. This is the malicious infrastructure that is used by cyber criminals to carry out their attacks.

Last week they were instrumental in taking down a botnet consisting of 30 command & control servers and 'zillions' of zombies. (The number is unknown but large.) In this exercise, TLLOD contacted eight ISPs to take down about 60% of the C&C servers, which talked to zombie PCs infected with a variant of bot software known as Pushdo/Cutwail.

There was major impact, but this is the third time that a Pushdo botnet was taken down, and each time the cyber criminals reconstitute their networks fairly quickly. Looks like they too have some sharp system admins that know how to do disaster recovery. This is actually an interesting story about the cyber crime IT infrastructure. TLLOD Blog:

Hot Certified, Noncertified IT Skills: What You Need Now

What are the "hot" certified and noncertified skills that IT professionals need? IT research analyst Foote Partners of Vero Beach, Fla., has some answers. eWEEK parsed out the top 10 certified and top 10 noncertified skills from the report that are trending for the next three to six months from Foote Partners' latest "Hot List" skills report. Foote Partners' research emphasis on skills and certifications purports to capture "forward indicators of technology, business and even business investments," as well as "insights into technology segmentation (commitments, purchase intentions)."

A fair amount of software- and programming-related skills, with specific mention of Linux and securing Linux, were included in a recent report outlining the skills IT professionals most need now. Here is a look at the current top 10 certified and top 10 noncertified skills from the report:

IBM will ship its new z196 processor this month, positioned as the world?s fastest chip. The new CPUs will ship in a new version of the IBM mainframe--the zEnterprise System--that begins shipping to customers on Sept. 10. A VM Gotcha With A Nice Recovery

You may not be familiar with the NTSYSADMIN that Sunbelt/GFI has hosted for the last few hundred years or so. This is a posting from NPARR that I thought you might like. There are many of these on a regular basis. This list is free and a great resource. Subscribe here, bottom left:
    http://www.wservernews.com/100906-sunbeltcommunities

"So I shut down a DC VM yesterday and go to turn it back on and get a hosed ntoskrnl.exe upon boot. Great, another learning experience brought to you by Tuesday, the new Monday. Restore the VM Backup from day before and still have the error. So the virtual disk has been fragged for a while. I try booting off install iso and restoring the file and get errors trying to restore the corrupt file, so the disk is really in bad shape. Last ditch effort I attach the virtual disk to another server and run chkdsk on it. Viola, It finds a ton of file and index errors and fixes them. Detach, power on DC and it boots up with no problem. So if I would have done that in the first place it would have taken me an whole five minutes. So the moral of the story is don't assume your backups are good. Even if you can restore them, if you haven't booted them then you can't be sure, what a pain."

    Have Email Archiving Needs Changed?

GFI's blog had an interesting article. Here is how it starts: "Email Archiving has been around for quite a while now and according to a 2009 study (The Radicati Group "E-Mail Archiving Market, 2009-2013") the market is predicted to grow from $2.1 billion back in 2009 to over $5.1 billion by 2013. The IT landscape has changed significantly since the first Email Archiving solutions emerged and some of these changes also seem to have an impact not only on the general SMB/SME email needs, but also on their email archiving needs.

    Mailbox Limit

The growing popularity and widespread use of web based email has changed the way people use email. Google?s philosophy with Gmail to encourage users never to delete an email but to simply archive old emails was truly groundbreaking. Upon launch Gmail offered a massive 1 GB (now >7.4 GB) of free storage which dwarfed its competitors? Microsoft Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail meager 2 and 4 Mb respectively. A direct result of this has seen business users question their often very small business mailbox size limits and demand to be able to archive all business emails. Business users also want seamless access to all their emails including the archived one. More:

  • Fixed code that would indicate "VSS Down" when PC times were not synchronized.
  • Fixed bug where agent communication failed if the OS name was greater than 50 characters.
  • Fixed bug where VSS would crash when proxy checkbox is enabled and no data is entered.
