Need Your Input: New DNS Service

Hi All, Sunbelt has an interesting question for you. We would love to know if you would be interested in a DNS service which you would use to replace your existing DNS server. This new service would provide an additional layer of protection from many malware domains. It is free for consumers, and enterprises are able to get a license. If you are interested in that, what do you expect to have to pay for a service like this. Here is a short blog post that describes this new DNS service:

Patch Tuesday: Redmond Plans To Fix 13 Windows Holes

There will be nine security bulletins for September's Patch Tuesday. They will address a total of 13 vulnerabilities. And no less than four of them carry the highest rating of "critical". Most important are are fixes for remote code execution bugs in both Office and Windows. You should check out the bulletins when they are released on Sept. 14th.

The remaining five, (all rated "important") have to do with the OS itself, and include issues on both privilege escalation and remote execution. The total is a bit high, and it's expected that some of these are related to the recent DLL issue.

If you still run WinXP SP2, most of these fixes will apply to SP2, but you no longer get the patches. Upgrade to SP3 as soon as you can.

Epic Failures: 11 Infamous Software Bugs

Computerworld has a fun story. Mark your calendars! Sept. 9 is hereby declared Debugging Day. It's been associated with removing bugs for more than 50 years now but is rarely formally celebrated. So let's start the tradition this year. It all began with a log entry from 1947 by Harvard University's Mark II technical team. The now-classic entry features a moth taped to the page, time-stamped 15:45, with the caption "Relay #70 Panel F (moth) in relay" and the proud boast, "First actual case of bug being found." They have a picture too!:

Russian Trojan Blamed For Credit Card Losses At US Diner

John E Dunn at Techworld reported that hundreds of lunchtime customers of a diner in the US city of Memphis are believed to have had funds stolen from their debit and credit cards after PCs at the venue became infected with malware. Large numbers of customers reported having had funds taken after using Jason?s Deli in recent weeks, which prompted an investigation by the US Secret Service, part of the Department of Homeland Security.

After establishing that staff were not involved, police discovered that a computer system used by to verify credit cards had been infected with unidentified new-variant malware, which had logged and forwarded the data to criminals believed to be in Russia. ?The computers received a virus that was unknown before this event,? said Special Agent Rick Harlow of the US Secret Service in a news conference. ?No antivirus program that we ran against it found it,? he said. That is why you need VIPRE which has the highest percentage proactive protection of all AV out there. And something else that would not hurt is Internet Security Awareness Training (ISAT)for all staff:

BOOK: The Creature The Creature from Jekyll Island

Most of you know that I'm a voracious reader. The best book I read in the last 10 years (I'm not kidding you) has a funny title, until you read the second half of it: "A Second Look at the Federal Reserve". The FED was created on the private Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. This book meticulously documents where money comes from, where it goes. More important, it answers questions like who makes it? The money magicians' secrets are unveiled. You get a close look at the smoke and mirrors, their pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A dry and boring subject? Just wait! You'll be hooked in five minutes. Reads like a detective story ? which it really is. But it's all true. Creature from Jekyll Island will change the way you view the world, politics, and money. Yes, nothing to do with IT. But fascinating reading:
