    Hyper-V Live Migration: Step-by-Step - 10/14

"Playbook to a Seamless Hyper-V Live Migration"

Windows Server 2008 R2?s Hyper-V live migration feature enables you to move virtual machines between Hyper-V hosts with no end user downtime. It also can blend seamlessly into existing IT environments. A live Hyper-V migration allows for:

  • Data center consolidation and migration
  • Ease of management
  • End-to-end disaster recovery
  • Application workload balancing
  • Zero downtime maintenance

In this first half of this web seminar, Michael Otey, technical director for Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine, will explain the architecture and requirements of a live migration. He will then go through a step-by-step guide showing you how to configure the Windows Server infrastructure for live migration.

In the second half, we will discuss common deployment scenarios for live and quick migration. We will also present a customer case study and benefits to help you make an informed decision on deploying this solution.

Are Android Devices As Secure As iPads And iPhones?

Apple has done enough security-wise with its iPhone and iPad to make many CSOs comfortable with the mobile devices connecting to corporate networks, but Google's Android still has a ways to go. Andrew Jaquith, a Forrester Research senior analyst who issued a report this summer on iPhone/iPad security and says the No. 1 client inquiry topic for him this past quarter has been the iPad, acknowledges that he is still coming up to speed on Android and its security model. However, he says it is clear that Google -- and especially the carriers supporting Android smartphones and tablets -- "frankly have their priorities around share rather than security... Android devices have been propelled along by the desire of the carriers to get a higher margin device that competes well with the iPhone and iPad, that gives them some buzz and makes them more than dumb pipes." Small Business Server 7 Public Preview Now Available

Paul Thurrott reported this week that Microsoft on Tuesday issued a public preview version of its upcoming Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 7, a direct follow-up to the current SBS version. For this next-generation SBS, Microsoft is actually splitting the product line into two distinct products, SBS 7 and SBS "Aurora. The latter is based on Windows Home Server (WHS) and dispenses with the bundled server products.

"SBS 7 is dedicated to providing small-business customers with a highly manageable, low complexity solution to help cut costs, save time, and be more efficient," Microsoft General Manager Kevin Kean wrote in a blog post announcing the release. "SBS 7 offers on-premise email and collaboration-suite functionalities that Aurora's customers can add through online services." More, and a link to the download here:

Searching AntiVirus Solution For Amazon Cloud

Just received the following a few days ago: "Just thought I share my journey, searching for an ANTIVIRUS solution for the Amazon Cloud.

    My requirements were the following:

    1. Must provide specific consideration for Windows Servers, not only workstations.
    2. Easy to install and to deploy without major configuration changes on servers.
    3. Easy administration and flexible policy configuration and functionality.
    4. Easy to understand, intuitive GUI.
    5. (Optional) Includes a Host-based Intrusion Detection System.
    6. (Optional) Includes an Intrusion Prevention System.
    7. Must actually work!!.

I installed the following products? trial version software, it varied from being impossible to install to impossible to work with:

    1. Product A (impossible to install and distribute agent software, very complex to install and use)
    2. Product B (Not consistent, almost impossible to install and distribute agent software)
    3. Product C (with the hope this should be simple, could not even connect to Microsoft SQL Server for database during installation)
    4. Product D (have lots of experience so I could install the server and agents. The product is just so limited in functionality and inconsistent that I cannot work with it).
    5. Product E (actually did not get to install the product, from docs and early experience it appears to have the same level of administration complexity as Trend Micro).
    6. GFI VIPRE (by miles the BEST)

As you can see, I installed and tested 5 products until I installed GFI VIPRE. This should give you an idea how dissatisfied I was with your competitor?s product, I just refused to work with it. After installing GFI VIPRE and deployed it to 4 remote servers in my Amazon Cloud under an hour, I was actually SO impressed with GFI VIPRE, I had to tell you about it and no wonder GFI just bought Sunbelt Software. This product is SO FAR ahead in usability, installability, readability, manageability etc., against any of the other products I evaluated. It is actually amazing.

    GFI VIPRE?s antivirus software:

    1. Documentation is extremely well written for administrators who do not have time to read.
    2. Product is extremely simple to install.
    3. GUI is extremely simple to understand and intuitive.
    4. Extremely simple to configure remote server and to distribute agents.
    5. Very simple to configure policies.
    6. It includes HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention).
    7. It includes IDS (Intrusion Detection).
    8. So far, it actually works.

Your product is amazing, thank you very much. -- L.B. Systems Administrator

    VIPRE Enterprise Feedback on Spiceworks

Some one posted a question ?Who's moved to Vipre and why?? Here is one response, (edited for brevity)

"Ok.. my two cents... We just finished up doing an in depth eval on Vipre and have some thoughts. I have used MANY other corporate AV and IMHO this is the lightest one out there. Almost noticed a speed increase immediately. We have really put it though its paces, including the ability to automatically remove our old protection as it installs itself.

Where we had problems in the past is not so much Viruses, but with spyware detection and removal. According to Sunbelt, their company started as a spyware company and built their AV engine from the spyware side instead of the other way around. I believe that most threats out there now fall into the category of not the traditional 'virus' but the spyware steal your money or information category. Our current AV has done little to none for the current 'fake antivirus' infections. I was tired of running a corp AV product and having to use MBAM to remove all these pesky fake antivirus malware.

The console is one of the nicest I have seen. It has real information, well organized, and updated often. You have a lot of control over the agents and they can be put into user-defined groups to act differently accordingly. These can be by location, type ie workstation, server, remote user, etc. The quarantines are managed better than I have seen as well.

We are a manufacturing entity with multiple US physical locations (wans), remote offices overseas, and remote US users (vpn). One thing I particularly like is that you can open one port in the company firewall, set a route to the Vipre console machine, and have visibility of ALL your AV in the world. This took me about 5 minutes to set this up. You create an installable to send to this user if they are not local at the time of install, and when they run the MSI, they show up and are manageable just like they were down the hall. The only thing is they get their updated directly from Sunbelt from the Internet instead of your server. All their quarantine and actions are fully manageable by the console. And will the grouping, you can set so they can manage or see more of whats going on than local users (so you don't get a call at 3am from Australia for instance)

One last thing, I said we were doing an evaluation. Should have said we are just waiting on CFO to sign off on the purchase order so we can rid ourselves of our current AV and move to Sunbelt. And until the end of this month, they are doing a fantastic promotion for competitive upgrades. (and no I do NOT work for Sunbelt or have any personal ties to them) -- Thank you, S.F.

30-day eval here. Did you know you get free tech support during this?
