Cyber Heist Using Zeus Trojan Nets $70 Million

This time, the Wall Street Journal had the best reporting of this ongoing investigation. Cyber-thieves used the Zeus Trojan to penetrate accounts of individuals, small businesses, municipalities and churches.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said: "The Internet is the crime scene of the 21st Century."

More than 100 people have been arrested or charged in the U.S. and the U.K. as part of an alleged global cybercrime ring using computer viruses to steal bank-account information and loot money from unsuspecting victims. At least $3 million was stolen from U.S. accounts from about May of last year to this September, federal and state prosecutors said in New York Thursday as they unveiled indictments. The investigation is in its early stages and could result in law-enforcement actions in other countries, authorities said. Read more:

    Realtime Privacy Monitoring on Smartphones

If you work in an organization that requires a high level of security, and your users carry smartphones, you should read this.

A joint study by Intel Labs, Penn State, and Duke University has identified that publicly available cell-phone applications from application markets are releasing consumers' private information to online advertisers. Researchers at the participating institutions have developed a realtime monitoring service called TaintDroid that precisely analyzes how private information is obtained and released by applications "downloaded" to consumer phones. In a study of 30 popular applications, TaintDroid revealed that 15 send users' geographic location to remote advertisement servers. The study also found that seven of the 30 applications send a unique phone (hardware) identifier, and, in some cases, the phone number and SIM card serial number to developers. More at:

Microsoft's Anti-Android FUD Campaign in Full Swing

OSnews.com came out with an interesting story. It started out like this: "With the release of Windows Phone 7 upon us, the hype machine now goes all the way up to 11. While hype machines are generally relatively harmless and easy to poke a hole through, coordinated FUD campaigns by patent trolls are not. After Apple and Microsoft trolled HTC, and Microsoft now trolling Motorola, the actual FUD campaign against Android is in full swing. Windows Phone 7 has to succeed. Come hell or high water:

System Admin: Feedback On VIPRE Enterprise Premium

FYI: "VIPRE has found three different threats that Symantec was unable to find. Also, I've noticed your dashboard is efficient in regards to notifying me of what clients are truly being scanned and not being scanned. Also, the feature that allows me to copy specified settings to various policies saves a TON of time and also protects me from accidentally not copying settings that should be copied. I also enabled the active scanning and really didn't see a bad performance hit. Almost all of our computers are Dell OptiPlex 360 and 380's running Windows 7 Pro with 2 GB's of RAM. Stable machines but not insane work horses by any means. But, even with their baseline specs I don't see a big performance hit with active scanning." -- J.L.
