Redmond Rolls Out SP1 RC1 for Win7 & W2K8 R2

The boys and girls in Redmond this week pushed out Release Candidate 1 of Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2. Microsoft also confirmed something that Redmond watcher Paul Thurrott reported back in June: The final version of SP1 won't ship until Q1 2011.

Here is their official statement: "This release candidate signals the last public beta build to be released prior to the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) final release." Some one could have worded that better I'm sure, but we get the idea.

As you know, Win7 and WinServer 2008 Revision Two have the same code base, and this SP1 covers both, but it does different things for each platform. It is pretty simple for Win7, hotfixes and a rollup of security updates. For WinServer2008 R2 however, SP1 gives you significant new features.

Some of those are virtualization-related that improve WK28 R2's Hyper-V, Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX. I talked about these earlier, but in short, RemoteFX get you full fledged graphics on your thin clients, and with Dynamic Memory you can give Hyper-V the ability to allocate more RAM to virtual machines on the fly.

Download SP1 RC1 for Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 and TEST, TEST, TEST. Note, it is available in separate 32-bit and 64-bit kits. [email protected]:

Take New ITIC/GFI Survey - Win A Free iPad or iPod!

We'd like to invite you to participate in the latest joint ITIC/GFI survey on Global Server Hardware and Server OS Reliability. It should only take a few minutes of your time to answer the multiple choice questions and one essay question. This survey polls organizations on their experience with the reliability, uptime and patch management experiences associated with the major server operating systems and server hardware platforms. All responses will be kept confidential. As always, we thank you in advance for your participation. As an added incentive, ITIC and GFI are giving away a free iPad and a free iPod to the survey respondent who provides the most insightful response to the final essay question. So be sure to provide us with your Email address along with your comment within the Essay question response. Once the survey is finalized, we'll publish the Executive Summary and survey highlights in this newsletter. To further show our appreciation, anyone who completes the survey can get a complimentary copy of the Report once it's published by sending an Email to Laura DiDio at: [email protected]. eWEEK: VIPRE Enterprise AV is Effective, Inexpensive

"Our experience with Symantec AV was troubled. We encountered multiple issues installing the management console which Symantec support was not able to resolve. Performance of the Symantec agent effected end user system performance. After several trials with various other AV products we settled on VIPRE Enterprise AV and have been very satisfied with the results. The product does what it is supposed to do without complications. VIPRE Enterprise "just works"." Average Score: 9.7. The Story Of The Ribbon

Here is the video on the research done that brought about the new Office Ribbon. It is interesting, even entertaining to watch, and you learn a LOT about it at the same time. Farewell, menus and toolbars! Come hear the behind-the-scenes story of how the 2007 Office Ribbon user interface was imagined, designed, and validated.

See never-before-shown early prototypes, hear about mistakes they learned from during the design process, and find out the principles of user experience design they used each step of the way in creating the first totally new user interface for Office.

Jensen Harris is the Group Program Manager of the Microsoft Office User Experience team and was one of the key designers behind the new Ribbon user interface introduced in Office 2007. Jensen joined Microsoft in 1998, and he has been focused on the overall UI model for Microsoft Office since late 2003:

New Firefox Add-On Hijacks Facebook, Twitter Sessions

A new Firefox add-on dubbed Firesheep lets 'pretty much anyone' scan a Wi-Fi network and hijack others' access to Facebook, Twitter and a host of other services, a security researcher warned today. All over the press but ComputerWorld had the best write-up:

Microsoft Windows 8: 10 Must-Have Features

Windows 8? I can hear a lot of people think: "Sheesh, I'm just getting around to the Win7 upgrade plans, I'm not even remotely ready for 8!" And you would not be alone. Many enterprises would not even thing about that upgrade until 5 years from now. However, it's interesting to see what MS are planning for Win8.

eWEEK came out with an interesting News Analysis. Windows 8 is scheduled to hit store shelves in 2012. When it does, Microsoft must deliver features that will ensure that Windows will remain the dominant desktop operating system. Even though Windows 7 is performing extremely well around the world as the fastest-selling version of Microsoft's operating system ever, the company already is working on Windows 8. For now, it has been relatively tight-lipped about the features Windows 8 will bring to the table, but it expects to make it available to customers in about two years. Between now and then, the company will be doing everything it can to build upon the success of Windows 7. Here is the rest of the article:

US Air Force Publishes Cyber Warfare Manual

The SANS institute reported (October 25, 2010): "The US Air Force has published "Cyberspace Operations: Air Force Doctrine Document 3-12," the service's "foundational doctrine publication for Air Force operations in, through, and from the cyberspace domain [and is meant] to provide insight for Airmen to follow." The manual focuses largely on defensive strategies and comprises lists of definitions, acronyms and reporting hierarchies. And here is the PDF, 62 pages of very interesting reading:

Big Brother Software Reads Your Documents, Decides What to Print

Mike Elgan wrote in his Mike's List 131: "Canon unveiled an evil document management system called the Uniflow 5. The software enables your office Big Brother to centrally manage all the office's printers, scanners, copiers and multifunction devices. It not only tracks everything printed or copied, but it will actually refuse print or copy documents containing certain words banned by the administrator. It gets worse. If someone tries to print or copy something with a banned keyword, the system immediately e-mails a copy of the document to the admin". The only thing lacking is integration with an HR system that automatically prints a pink slip, and dispatches a robocop that escorts the culprit to the front door:

IE6 Addiction Throws Monkey Wrench Into Windows 7 Migration

ComputerWorld came out with an interesting bit of data: 1-in-5 enterprises will bust budget moving to Windows 7 because of IE6 compatibility problems, says Gartner. And although Microsoft has made it clear it wants IE6 dead and buried, the company needs to help solve a problem it created when it released the non-standard browser, then pressed businesses to develop IE6-specific applications, said Michael Silver of Gartner. "Microsoft would rather put the non-standard browser technology behind it," Silver said in a recently published research report. Easy for Microsoft to say; it doesn't have to deal with the IE6 fallout. Article:

Third Party News

NEW: WindowsSecurity's Chris Sanders Reviews VIPRE Enterprise

"Antivirus (AV) software has been the bread and butter of the computer security industry for years and although it's not as "sexy" as modern intrusion detection or SIEM software it's still a necessity in any network. Although the AV market was originally dominated by just a few software giant's there are now a plethora of options available when evaluating an AV platform for your network.

"Over the last couple of weeks I've had the pleasure of reviewing the VIPRE Enterprise AV platform from Sunbelt Software (a GFI subsidiary) quite thoroughly by deploying it in a test environment as well as on my laptop that I use on a daily basis. Here I will discuss my findings and talk about how VIPRE Enterprise works, what I liked about it, and where I think it could stand to improve.":
