Server Sales Soar

Excellent news. Sales of server systems jumped 15% in Q3, said Gartner. This is a sign that businesses are again spending big on tech, finally addressing the pent-up demand from the last few years.

Jeffrey Hewitt, a Gartner analyst, says that much of the growth was fueled by new and expanding data centers. Often, that means providers of SaaS and cloud. "Skinless" server varieties that come with some parts and casings stripped away were among the biggest gainers, as they are low cost but pack a punch.

HP saw server revenues increase 22.5% in the quarter. Dell had even faster growth, going up 25.6% from the year-earlier period. IBM posted a 9.9% increase. It is interesting to see that shipments of x86 servers grew 14.9% in the quarter, but revenue for the boxes grew 29.5%, caused by companies opting for high-end machines and running a bunch of virtual servers on them. And now it's waiting for the increased sales numbers of the storage and software companies, which usually follow server sales.

Things are looking up!

NEW: WindowsSecurity's Chris Sanders Reviews VIPRE Enterprise

"Antivirus (AV) software has been the bread and butter of the computer security industry for years and although it's not as "sexy" as modern intrusion detection... it's still a necessity in any network. Although the AV market was originally dominated by just a few software giants, there are now a plethora of options available. "Over the last couple of weeks I've had the pleasure of reviewing the VIPRE Enterprise AV platform from Sunbelt Software (a GFI subsidiary) quite thoroughly by deploying it in a test environment as well as on my laptop that I use on a daily basis. Here I will discuss my findings and talk about how VIPRE Enterprise works, what I liked about it, and where I think it could stand to improve.":

Motorola has certainly made a big impact on the consumer smartphone market this year with its line of Android-based Droid phones, but what about business customers? Users and business managers alike are loving the iPad as a potential laptop replacement, for at least part of the time. And more and more companies are providing employees iPads or letting employees use their own. So, just as companies typically install a suite of desktop productivity apps (nearly always Microsoft Office), what should the iPad equivalent be? InfoWorld has the story:

Troubleshooting iPads - Tips And Tricks For Fixing Problems

Well, after the recent OS upgrade, I ran into some issues. Sound stopped working, could no longer lock the screen from tilting, things like that. Computerworld has a VERY useful little article about fixing the device. "Anyone who has spent any amount of time with an iPad will know that -- like all computers -- it sometimes doesn't do what it's supposed to do. It could be a frozen screen, a system that overheats or a refusal to recharge. The result is the same: You have to figure out what's wrong with it and how to get it back on the straight and narrow:
