Server Boss Muglia Out: Ballmer Next?

I'm still puzzled about this one. Did Muglia get the boot with a golden parachute, or was he sick and tired and decided to quit as president of Microsoft's Server and Tools Business? I think it is probably the parachute. There is fallout however, as industry analysts all over the place are now calling for Ballmer to step down. Unlikely to happen, but Ballmer just might retire early a little further down the road.

Thing is, Bob Muglia after more than 2 decades in Redmond, would have been a great successor for Ballmer, with the enormous experience that he has in the server space. Would not be the first time that a Founder steps back in to save the day, and pull a 'steve jobs'. Welcome back Bill Gates!

    Intel Doing Great In Q4

Intel's fourth-quarter earnings jumped 48%, topping Wall Street's' views, amid rising margins and a sharp increase in sales. The chip maker also forecast current-quarter revenue of between $11.1 billion and $11.9 billion, more than the $10.74 billion in revenue expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Intel's shares rose 1.4% to $21.59 after hours.

Windows Phone 7 Leaves A Microsoft Fan In Angst

The deal breaker: security shortcomings. Story in InfoWorld: "I liked a lot of the native apps and how Windows Phone 7 worked, so I began thinking that even without copy and paste and application multitasking, a Windows Phone 7 device like the Samsung Focus could replace my Android. But then I tried to actually use it in a work environment and realized Windows Phone 7 doesn't support most EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) security features."

Google Chrome Gets Ready For Enterprise.

eWEEK had a really good overview about this. "Google Chrome takes another step toward enterprise suitability with enterprise-ready installation packages and configuration options that will allow IT administrators to centrally manage the availability, freshness and operational behavior of Google’s Web browser. In December, Google released a new Windows installer package compatible with standard enterprise software deployment tools, along with a set of new policy templates for use with Windows Active Directory (along with some deployment help for Linux and Mac desktops as well). Using only Group Policy, I was able to push Chrome to my managed desktops-overwriting any existing Chrome instances-and configure 36 different browser functions, including the homepage, default search provider and history- and password-saving behaviors. I was also able to blacklist the use of certain, or all, browser extensions. To read the full review, check out "Google Chrome Delivers Enterprise Deployment and Management"."

Cracking WPA Keys In The Cloud

At the forthcoming Black Hat conference, blogger Thomas Roth plans to demonstrate how weak WPA PSKs can be cracked quickly and easily using Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service. Last November, Roth had already caused a stir when he used Amazon's EC2 to launch an attack on SHA-1 hashes. Amazon had added "Cluster GPU Instances", an option for fast calculations, last November and even before that, EC2 had already been used for cracking passwords. Story here:
