Patch Tuesday Gotcha - Fix 'breaks' VMware

Networkworld reported that VMware is telling customers that two Windows 7 security patches have left the VMware View desktop virtualization client unable to access the View Connection Server, which brokers the connection between a user's computer and a virtual desktop. This led Gartner analyst Chris Wolf to write a blog post titled "Windows 7 Update Breaks VMware View Client" that says this week's event is "an important lesson in BYOD" deployments that let workers bring their own devices to work. Redmond RTMs SP1 For Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2

Redmond announced this week the release to manufacturing (RTM) of the first Service Pack for both Win7 and W2K8 Server R2. You would think this is a big deal, but it is only for one of the two. SP1 for Win7 is basically just all the fixes brought together. Server W2K8 though, has two big new features that really add to its virtualization chops: 1) RemoteFX allows you to utilize a GPU in the server to deliver rich desktop experiences on ultra-thin desktop hardware. 2) Dynamic Memory increases the amount of VMs you can run on a server big time, without degrading scalability or performance.

Webinar: Ensuring Your Organization's Integrity and Security in a Digital World - Mar 17

You can't watch the TV or surf the web today without over the top advertisements stating that your PC is probably infected with a virus that is slowing it down and causing permanent damage. Although the advertisements are often misleading, the reality is that viruses and other types of malware can cripple an organization-destroying productivity and reputation, especially if an organization becomes the source of a malware outbreak for a customer. In this seminar, we'll look at the common types of malware, how they attack, and the methods to mitigate them-including looking at multiple layers of security and malware protection with emphasis on end-point protection and the key features that should be considered when choosing your end-point protection approach and best practices.

iPhone Attack Reveals Passwords In Six Minutes

Researchers in Germany say they've been able to reveal passwords stored in a locked iPhone in just six minutes and they did it without cracking the phone's passcode. The attack, which requires possession of the phone, targets keychain, Apple's password management system. Passwords for networks and corporate information systems can be revealed if an iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen, said the researchers at the state-sponsored Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT). Social Engineering: 3 Examples Of Human Hacking

Social engineering expert Chris Hadnagy shares juicy tales of successful cons he's seen as a security consultant, and six prevention tips. Chris Hadnagy gets paid to fool people, and he's gotten pretty good at it over the years. A co-founder of social-engineering.org and author of Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking, Hadnagy has been using manipulation tactics for more than a decade to show clients how criminals get inside information.

Hadnagy outlines three memorable stories of social engineering tests that he's included in his new book (you can also read a short excerpt), and points out what organizations can learn from these results. I am reading this book and it's worth it by the way.

Vendors Tap Into Cloud Security Concerns With New Encryption Tools

Computerworld reported that a handful of vendors have begun rolling out new technologies designed to let companies take advantage of cloud computing environments without exposing sensitive data. One of these vendors, CipherCloud, a Cupertino, Calif.-based start-up, on Thursday launched a virtual appliance technology that companies can use from within their premises to encrypt or to mask sensitive data before it hits the cloud platform. Get Your Windows Networks IPv6-ready -- While You Still Can

The day has finally arrived -- IPv4 addresses have run out. When the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) started handing out IP addresses, they had about 4.3 billion to disperse. Sounds like a lot, right? But when you consider there are 7 billion humans on the planet, with people in developed nations needing two or more devices with an address each, you can see how this number might become depleted.

Of course, IANA anticipated this depletion and created a new flavor of IP (version 6, or iPv6) in 1995 that will allow for trillions upon trillions of addresses, thanks to its 128-bit address length (versus IPv4's 32-bit length). And IPv6 is more than just an address expansion upgrade: It includes built-in IPSec security and easier management through autoconfiguration of devices. But now that IPv4 addresses are depleted, what's a Windows network administrators to do? Read More:
