Revenge Of The Tablets

Shipments of PCs went down rather than up in Q1 2011, surprising everyone including Gartner and IDC. They had predicted shipments would be up as the economy improved. Both of them were wrong. IDC said sales of US PCs dropped more than 10%. Gartner puts the decline at 6%, specifically noting that laptops shipments were down for the third quarter in a row.

IDC looked at a relatively modest 1.5% gain, but the reality was a nasty drop of 3.2% to just 80.5 million units worldwide. And then Gartner, who had predicted the market would be up a healthy 3%, reported that PC demand was down 1.1% to 84.3 million units. Why the discrepancy? Their numbers are measured a bit differently, but this time they are a bit more apart than normal, perhaps caused by the disruptions in Japan.

Both analysts point at the iPad as the culprit. However, IDC Veep Bob O'Donnell might be pointing in the right direction when you look at his statement: "While it's tempting to blame the decline completely on the growth of media tablets, we believe other factors, including extended PC lifetimes and the lack of compelling new PC experiences, played equally significant roles."

Mikako Kitagawa, a Gartner analyst pointed at something similar: "Weak demand for consumer PCs was the biggest inhibitor of growth," she said. "Low prices for consumer PCs, which had long stimulated growth, no longer attracted buyers. Instead, consumers turned their attention to media tablets and other consumer electronics. With the launch of the iPad 2 in February, more consumers either switched to buying an alternative device, or simply held back from buying PCs. We're investigating whether this trend is likely to have a long-term effect on the PC market."

It's going to be clear as daylight what they are going to come up with, when iPad 2 shipments are ramping up after the component shortage is solved.

Which brings me to the system admin perspective. Tablets are here to stay. You better work out ways to integrate them, and beef up wireless security, as these puppies are all going to want to connect to your corporate WAPs.

What Are Your Peers Doing With Cloud, Virtualization and HA?

We'd like to invite you to participate in the latest joint ITIC/GFI Software survey on Virtualization, high availability and cloud deployment trends. We're sensitive to your time constraints. This survey should take only a few minutes to complete. It polls organizations on their current experiences with virtualization and the cloud as well as future deployment plans for both those crucial technologies. All responses will be kept confidential. As always, we thank you in advance for your participation. As an added incentive, ITIC and GFI are giving away a free iPad and a free iPod to the survey respondents who provides the most insightful response to the final essay question. So be sure to provide us with your Email address along with your comment within the Essay question response. Once the survey is finalized, we'll publish the Executive Summary and survey highlights in this newsletter. To further show our appreciation, anyone who completes the survey can get a complimentary copy of the Report once it's published by sending an Email to Laura DiDio at: [email protected] Here's the survey link. We look forward to your input!

Modern Microprocessors - A 90 Minute Guide!

WARNING: This article is meant to be informal and fun! Okay, so you're a CS graduate and you did a hardware/assembly course as part of your degree, but perhaps that was a few years ago now and you haven't really kept up with the details of processor designs since then.

In particular, you might not be aware of some key topics that developed rapidly in recent times...
  • Pipelining (superscalar, OoO, VLIW, branch prediction, predication)
  • Multi-core & simultaneous multithreading (SMT, hyper-threading)
  • SIMD vector instructions (MMX/SSE/AVX, AltiVec)
  • Caches and the memory hierarchy
Fear not! This article will get you up to speed fast. In no time you'll be discussing the finer points of in-order vs out-of-order, hyper-threading, multi-core and cache organization like a pro. But be prepared - this article is brief and to-the-point. It pulls no punches and the pace is pretty fierce (really). Let's get into it... Recommended:

Independent Lab Tests Find Firewalls Fall Down On The Job

During the first quarter of this year, independent IT security testing company, NSS Labs evaluated six network firewalls: Check Point Power-1 11065, Cisco ASA 5585, Fortinet Fortigate 3950, Juniper SRX 5800, Palo Alto Networks PA-4020, and the Sonicwall E8500. What the company found would likely startle any existing or potential customers: three of the six firewalls failed to stay operational when subjected to stability tests, five out of six didn't handle what is known as the "Sneak ACK attack," that would enable attackers to side-step the firewall itself. Finally, according to NSS Labs, the performance claims presented in the vendor datasheets "are generally grossly overstated." More at InfoWorld:

Customer Loves VIPRE Support

We received this email a few days ago: "Alex, Tammy was the equivalent of black-ops-specialty-force-of-one as she moved the cursor around countless pages and files darting here and there, merging, deleting, changing and ridding my computer of the malware. Took almost an hour. The malware was rather 'nasty' she noted and I certainly agree.

I've expressed my personal thanks to her but wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the responsiveness and effectiveness of her and your team. Congratulations to all involved. Thanks for the quick response. You've got my endorsement whenever it's needed. Have already recommended VIPRE and will do so when others ask about security software. -- M.B.
