This week's newsletter is all about extending the capabilities of Office 365 with third-party offerings. Of course, the important thing about third parties is whether or not you can trust them to remain in business over the long haul. For more insight into this important consideration, check out the following Dilbert comic:
HOT! Does your organization's service desk often have to deal with support issues involving Group Policy changes not getting pushed out to end-user computers? Check out our Tip of the Week for a possible solution for handling these kinds of problems.
Extending Office 365
We looked at Office 365 several times in this newsletter recently, see for example:
- Getting Started with Office 365 (Issue #923)
- Managing Office 365 Licensing (Issue #931)
- Migrating mail to Office 365 (Issue #951)
And I'm sure we'll look at Office 365 again in the future as the platform continues to evolve. But this time around instead of looking at Office 365 itself, we're going to briefly examine some third-party offerings for extending the platform's capabilities. The below is in no sense intended as a comprehensive listing of what's available, and if you're aware of any others and have tried them, let us know at [email protected] and we'll include them in the Mailbag section of a future issue.
The latest version of this software-as-a-service platform for Microsoft Office 365 management from AvePoint now enables businesses to enforce SharePoint Online policies, backup and restore data at the item level, and generate configuration reports to understand individual usage for site planning purposes.
Office 365 Suite
This solution from MetaVis Technologies provides analytics and dashboards that let you quickly see key information about your environment including security and permissions, tools for simplifying migration of content while maintaining metadata, and functionality for backing up and archiving data either locally or in the cloud.
Coming soon in March from DocuSign, eSignature apps for Office 365 will let you submit and sign documents without leaving Office applications so you can quickly and easily transact your business with confidence. For more information see this press release from the Microsoft News Center:
Centrify for Office 365
This identity management solution from Centrify provides Directory-based single sign-on, user provisioning and mobile management that helps simplify the end-user experience through single sign-on and self-service functionality.
Virtual Identity Server for Office 365
This solution from Optimal IdM extends Office 365 with multi-forest and multi-platform two-factor authentication and Denial of Service (DoS) prevention/detection capabilities.

This week's tip has been contributed by Ashley McGlone, Microsoft Premier Field Engineer.
Forcing Group Policy update using PowerShell
In Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 you can now force an immediate, remote GPUPDATE using the cmdlet Invoke-GPUpdate like this:
Invoke-GPUpdate -RandomDelayInMinutes 0 -Computer workstation1
This requires the Group Policy PowerShell module, meaning that you need the GPMC installed to have the command locally. You should also run it from an elevated PowerShell console.
You can even target Windows 7 clients and Windows Server 2008 R2.
This new command can be a game changer for the service desk!
