Editor's Corner

This week's newsletter is all about the good old days of yore when IT gadgets were fun to use and easy to understand, when worries about privacy didn't make you lose sleep at night, and when you bought stuff and owned it instead of renting it monthly from the cloud. It's about memories:

Now let's wax nostalgic as the end of another year of technological disruption approaches…

Christmas 2017 nostalgia issue

Christmas makes me wish for earlier times when life was slower and more peaceful. Milk and cookies for Santa instead of sending him texts. Getting drunk on egg nog instead of on the latest hype coming out of cloud vendors. Unwrapping presents from under the tree instead of having weary UPS drivers deliver them from Amazon.

What makes you feel nostalgic about the old days as an IT pro? Someone recently pointed me to this Twitter thread that has tens of thousands of tweets in it describing various things people fondly remember that youngsters today probably have never seen and wouldn't understand:

Here are a few things I feel nostalgic about…

10Base-T hubs:

The sound of a 56k modem establishing a connection:

Microsoft Comic Chat:

Installing a 16-bit ISA network card in a PC:

Installing Microsoft Works from floppy disks:

Using a paper map instead of GPS to reach your destination:

Paging someone instead of texting them:

Flip phones--oops, it looks like they're making a comeback:

Software that came in boxes and included a paper manual:

And finally, life without the Internet:

Bliss…

What older technologies do you get nostalgic about when you think of them? What do you still have and maybe even use that your younger colleagues in the IT profession might find strange and unusual or even totally bizarre? Email me at [email protected]

And a happy new year from us to you!!

Cheers,
Mitch and Ingrid Tulloch

Factoid of the Week

And now here is this week's factoid which naturally has to do with Christmas:

Fact: Tradition in Western culture says that a child who behaves badly during the year will receive only a lump of coal in their Christmas stocking.

Sourcehttp://www.wservernews.com/go/5u5kfhoj/

Question: I say, What's wrong with that? It's better than spending Christmas day freezing to death, isn't it? What do you think?

:-P
