Dramatic Overhaul of Windows GUI: Video
At a press event in Taipei this week, Redmond showed the next version of Windows, unveiling a dramatically overhauled tiles-based interface that they hope will be competitive in the tablet world. Microsoft marketing people must have gotten their fingers in this pie, because it's called a "reimagining" of Windows. Win8 will run on all types of devices from small, touch-sensitive smart phone screens to traditional large-screen PCs, and Win8 can be used with or without a keyboard and mouse.
Basically, the screen looks just like the new Windows smart phone screen. "The application comes quickly to life as Windows fades to the background," said Michael Angiulo, Windows Planning VP. "The tiles on the start screen are live -- they represent your people, your applications, your contacts, the information you care the most about," he said. "You can group them, arrange them and name them as you like, so that first start screen experience is really personal."
Win 8 still also provides the normal Windows desktop and backward compatibility with existing Windows apps. Microsoft President Steve Sinofsky stated: "Windows 8 is example of coloring outside the lines. We have an approach that is different, but builds on the value of an OS that sells 400 million or so units a year. Laptops, slates, desktops can all run one operating system." I will be reporting about this a lot more in the future. Stay tuned. Here's how it looks! 4:34 YouTube video:http://www.wservernews.com/go/1307095296859

Google Mail Hack Blamed On China
This is kind of a big deal. Google said: "Through the strength of our cloud-based security and abuse detection systems, we recently uncovered a campaign to collect user passwords, likely through phishing. This campaign, which appears to originate from Jinan, China, affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users including, among others, senior U.S. government officials, Chinese political activists, officials in several Asian countries (predominantly South Korea), military personnel and journalists. Here is their write-up,and how to counter these attacks: http://www.wservernews.com/go/1307096017515

How To Sabotage Your Wireless Network
A business-grade wireless network needs management, security, usability, reliability, and scalability features. If you don't have that, you're setting your network up for failure. InfoWorld has a good article:
"All too many businesses start a wireless network by installing Wi-Fi the same way you would at home. They will buy a low-end, consumer-grade access point from a Linksys, D-Link, or Buffalo Technology and put it in a common area, such as a conference room. Just like that, potentially for less than $100, you have a wireless network that is convenient for your employees and guests to use. You saved a bundle, but it's a big mistake." Why? Father Of The Internet Vint Cerf About Internet Security
Q: Seriously, though, you must have some reservations about the Internet.
A: "I do. The Internet lacks security. See this six-digit encryption key hanging around my neck? Some of us at Google have been wearing them since we discovered the Chinese were hacking into Google. The Internet is brittle and fragile and too easy to take down. It's a conduit for criminal activity. We need international treaties to prosecute the bad guys, but we don't have them." Which Industry?s Employees Fall for Phishing E-mail Most Often?
There is an article at the Enterprise Systems blog about recent phishing research that KnowBe4 has done. You may have visited the booth with the Harley Phatboy at TechEd, but were not told about the research results. This article has some very good observations about gullible users and what needs to be done to plug this 'security hole' More: http://www.wservernews.com/go/1307100726781
