Editor's Corner

Heads-Up: This Is My Last Issue

All, after 15 years of writing WServerNews, I'm passing the torch. It's been a fantastic ride, all of you have been great readers and I always got terrific feedback, thank you so much. From January 2012, WSN will be written by Mitch Tulloch, a very qualified Editor, and WSN stays in the same format.

However, I will keep you in the loop about secure computing from the admin's perspective though! I will be the new Editor-in-Chief of WindowSecurity News, which comes out monthly, also created by TechGenix, the same publisher as WServerNews. We will send you a sample version of WindowSecurity News at the end of January 2012. You can subscribe here:

http://www.wservernews.com/go/1324118651125

(If you can't do without your weekly fix of faves, quotes and my observations about cybercrime, subscribe to CyberheistNews, which I write weekly and gets sent every Tuesday)

Last Chance: Your Free Full Copy of my book: CYBERHEIST

Why did I write it? To increase IT and executive level awareness that the bad guys have moved from simple identity theft and stealing customer databases to full fledged robbery of corporate bank accounts (non-profits are targets too), using phishing and social engineering.

Most business owners, C-level executives, people in HR functions and still a lot of people in IT simply are unaware that organized cybercrime has developed into a very well funded, sophisticated and technically skilled operation. Unfortunately, management still has a false sense of security. With the rapid proliferation of social media and mobile computing, people are the new security perimeter!

Subscribers of WServerNews are eligible for a free copy of the e-book in PDF format. This is not just one chapter as a teaser. This is the whole darn book! Yes, you have to register, and you will receive my CyberheistNews e-zine once a week (and no spam!), but this is a complete no-brainer if you want more security budget. GET IT NOW. This is your last chance to get the whole book for free:

Your 2012 IT Job Outlook

In the Tech Briefing section this week, I'm showing you what your 2012 IT job outlook is going to be like, and it actually looks pretty good in quite a few areas. The coming year is also a good time to change jobs if you need to, or tame a bad boss if your mortgage is under water. Just read the articles, and you know most of what you need for the coming year! Your best bets are cloud-focused jobs, like 'Cloud Service Architect', building clouds that autoprovision and autoscale. Another one is 'Cloud Migration Specialist', taking legacy apps and relocating them to the cloud. And let's not forget 'Cloud Security Specialist'. If clouds are not secure, they don't have the correct security design, and that's why this is asought-after job.

Warm regards,

Stu Sjouwerman

Will The Cloud Take My Job?

The cloud is now taking many jobs that used to go to internal IT, and automation and self-service capabilities of "private clouds" are taking many other jobs from IT, with some vendors saying that automation can allow one administrator to manage as many as 30,000 servers. No doubt that these trends have some in IT fearing for their future.

Big Change: Redmond Will Auto-Update IE

Redmond announced this week that it will start auto-updating IE to the latest versions of the browser, something that will change somewhat depending on the Windows version. It's very similar to how the updates to the Chrome browser work. Luckily for us in the trenches, Redmond does provide workarounds if you have compatibility issues and need to stay on your current IE version. Here is the blog post:
