Editor's Corner

This Is National Cyber Security Awareness Month!

The Department of Homeland security and the National Cyber Security Alliance are sponsoring this yearly event. The idea is to raise awareness and oh boy it's needed. October is a great month to get budget for your security awareness training.

The point to make is that awareness is a continuous process. You might be able to check a compliance box if you subject all employees to a death-by-powerpoint once a year, but you are shooting yourself in the foot by doing so.

Apart from having your IT defenses (like VIPRE Antivirus) up to date, you really need to ding in security awareness on a constant basis. Humans need education, education, education. Use it or lose it is very much applicable here, and you simply cannot afford employees clicking on phishing links, infecting workstations and let hackers in freely. (A similar heads-up was published in CyberheistNews, which I write).

Invitation: Server Hardware, Database Reliability Survey

WServerNews and ITIC are teaming up to conduct an online survey on Server hardware and Database Reliability. The aim of this survey is to gauge user satisfaction with the reliability and uptime of your major server and DB platforms and your satisfaction with the pricing, service and support you receive from your vendors. Are the hardware and databases performing up to expectations? Are they too expensive or too hard to use? Tell us what you think.

As always, we know that you’re busy. This survey should take only a few minutes to complete. All responses are kept confidential. The survey is for informational purposes only. No one will call or Email you with any sales pitches.

Once again, ITIC and WServerNews are giving away a free iPad and a free iPod to the survey respondents who provides the most insightful response to the final essay question. So be sure to leave your Email address along with your comment within the Essay question response. Once the survey is finalized, we'll publish the Executive Summary and survey highlights in a coming issue. To thank you, anyone who completes the survey can get a complimentary copy of the Report once it's published by Emailing: [email protected]

iPhone 4S A Dud? I Don't Think So - Jobs Passed Away

To start off with, I don't have one, and don't plan to buy one. Been running Android since their early versions and that works perfectly fine for me. Even have VIPRE Mobile on it that seems to work great. BUT...

This recent 4S release seems to be panned in the press for being a dud. Well, taking the CPU from the iPad which is almost twice as fast seems pretty cool to me, and the fact it's dual-band and should be able to work all over the world is also a big plus, but the big news this time really is artificial intelligence. It does not always need to be hardware, sometimes game-changing software can be 'The Really Big Deal'.

The new Siri personal assistant in my opinion is truly innovative, and I have been waiting for software like this for a long time. If it really works, Apple has a fantastic jump on anyone else out there. If it turns out not to work (a lot of things need to be in place, starting with accurate voice recognition) Apple will have a major problem on its hands. Remember the first version of 'mobile me'? Let me know when you get the 4S and how Siri works for you. (I might become an Apple fanboy after all, since Sprint is going to carry the 4S, with an unlimited data plan).

Steve Jobs has left a great legacy, and his death was sudden but not unexpected. I found that Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg had the best look back at his career, since the two have known each other personally for many years. Here is the article:

Tech Briefing

w00t! IT Industry Adds Jobs In 2011

The TechAmerica Foundation released its Cyberstates 2011 report and the numbers look pretty good actually. IT Job gains in the first half of 2011 almost cancel out the losses during last year.

We added 115,000 jobs first half 2011, compared to job losses in IT during 2010 of about 2 percent of the tech workers in the U.S. From 2007 to 2010, during a recession, the U.S. tech industry lost 4 percent of its jobs, compared to a 7 percent decline for U.S. private industry as a whole. Documenting a Citrix XenApp 6 Farm with Microsoft PowerShell

Longtime WServerNews reader Carl Webster, Consultant and Citrix Technology Professional sent me this:

A customer site I was at recently needed their new XenApp 6 farm documented. I remembered reading about Citrix having some PowerShell "stuff" for XenApp 6 so I started searching. I came across a short article by Michael Bogobowicz Send Farm Server & Application Inventory By Email. That short article really piqued my interest. I took Michael’s little script as the starting point to learn Microsoft’s PowerShell. With some help from PowerShell MVP and fellow CTP Brandon Shell and a lot of help from Exchange MVP Michael B. Smith, I turned the original script into over 1600 lines of PowerShell to thoroughly document a XenApp 6 farm. This article will focus only on XenApp 6. There will be additional articles for XenApp 5 and XenApp 6.5. The articles are here:

Invalid Password. Please Try Again, Idiot

InfoWorld has an 'Off The Record' column, sent in by frustrated and anonymous IT professionals. Here is one that you should check out:

"I work for a large international company. As with most businesses, security is a priority, but our biggest security threat is our users, who for some reason cannot remember the basics: their usernames and passwords. As I hit the Save button on the latest change in our password policy, I'm amazed it's come to this. We, the IT professionals in charge of maintaining our network, have given in to the whining and complaining of our users and changed a policy purely based on their inability to follow it."

VIPRE Business 5.0 — Release Announcement

GFI Software is very pleased to announce the release of VIPRE Business version 5.0. VIPRE Business is the successor to the VIPRE Enterprise family of products.

The version numbers for this release are as follows:

  • Console: 5.0.4904
  • Agent: 5.0.4452

The headline features for version 5.0 include:

- Management Console Improvements

Improvements to the version 5.0 console are centered on ease-of-usability, and feature an updated look and feel. High-visibility toolbar buttons have been added to allow quick access to frequently-accessed areas.

- Agent Software Performance Improvements

Improvements to the version 5.0 agent focus on stability and performance, and resolving past issues that could have caused critical errors in isolated incidents.

- Agent Deployment Made Easy

The VIPRE Site Service and agent software will now automatically provision the Windows Firewall configuration with the necessary exclusions, in addition to displaying new agent installation dialogs. This allows for easier deployment by ensuring that the agent is able to successfully communicate and obtain updates, without requiring manual intervention to adjust the Windows Firewall settings.

- Incompatible Software Removal

Version 5.0 features new technology that automatically handles the removal of most third-party antivirus products prior to installing the VIPRE agent, allowing for easy migration from other antivirus products. This mitigates common risks associated when multiple antivirus products coexist on a single computer.

- Easy Remote Site Management

Version 5.0 simplifies the ability to remotely manage sites via a dedicated communication layer. This allows for easy connectivity to other sites without requiring direct database connectivity as in version 4.0. This is now handled via port 18088, as opposed to SQL port 1433.

- Built-in Database

New installations of version 5.0 will now use a built-in database, removing the Microsoft SQL Express 2005 prerequisite that existed in version 4.0.

- Audit Trail

Audit trail capabilities have been added at the site level, allowing quick and easy access to view configuration changes made within the product.
