WinServer 8: Three Key New Admin Features

Looking at the Windows Server 8 preview for developers, there are three new features that will benefit you as an admin tremendously. The first one is that you can use Server Manager over multiple systems at the same time. You can now group and remote control any Win8 Server and do admin bulk work. Big Time Saver #1.

Second is that the special headless version of server called Server Core used to be a pain in the neck to configure via the command line. There is now a GUI for that. Big Time Saver #2.

Third but not least is that the PowerShell command-line function is getting more powerful. There are 10 times more cmdlets in WinServer8, up to 2300 of em. Big Time Saver #3. I will talk a lot more in the future about it, when more data becomes available. Also see the new Windows Server 8 Guide further below.

Windows Intune 2 Released

Redmond announced the immediate availability of Windows Intune 2 this week. It's the latest version of their cloud-based PC management service since they released V1 seven months ago, and Microsoft plans to keep up this accelerated release schedule and add more power. The new version adds a series of handy new features, with the most important one being software distribution capabilities. V2 of course keeps all the excellent features of V1.

Stuxnet Ripoff Discovered

June 2010, when Stuxnet came out, we all knew that this was a new breed of malware. Head and shoulders above the pack. Next the source code was made public, and then it was just waiting for the first ripoff, and here it is. Security researchers from Symantec revealed they discovered a variant called W32.Duqu that shares much of the same code with Stuxnet. It was only a matter of time, the genie is out of the bottle...

Your Website Runs On ASP.Net? Check This Out

Hackers are in the midst of a massively successful SQL injection attack targeting websites built on Microsoft's ASP.Net platform. About 180,000 pages have been affected so far, security researchers say.

NetworkWorld reported on this one the first: "Attackers have planted malicious JavaScript on ASP.Net sites that causes the browser to load an iframe with one of two remote sites, according to security researchers at Armorize who discovered the attack. From there, the iframe attempts to plant malware on the visitor's PC via a number of browser drive-by exploits. Read the story and see which domains are the culprits:

Critical Java Update Fixes Ton Of Remote Takeover Flaws

Brian Krebs reported: "Oracle Corp. released a critical update to plug at least 20 security holes in versions of its ubiquitous Java software. Nearly all of the Java vulnerabilities can be exploited remotely to compromise vulnerable systems with little or no help from users.

If you use Java, take some time to update the program now. According to a report released this month by Microsoft, the most commonly observed exploits in the first half of 2011 were those targeting Java flaws. The report also notes that Java exploits were responsible for between one-third and one-half of all exploits observed in each of the four most recent quarters.
